Down Moms

Happy Mother’s Day! « Mission Mission-1

After all this week’s talk of down moms, I figured I’d say something about my down mom. The above image is a screen shot from a video I posted last Mother’s Day. But I figure some of you might’ve missed it, so we’ll look at it again.

In the video, my mom shares this rad final project she’d made in college, and in the accompanying text you get some historical background as to part of maybe why I love the Mission so much. Happy Mother’s Day! Link.

Green Dot Dead Drop

Ariel just got a fun email from his mom (that’s right, his mom):

Waiting to cross at Valencia on 16th heading east, a guy pulls up on a bicycle, sprays a dark green dot over some other colors on the curb over the sewer, and then dropped a 2″ X 1″ filled (don’t know with what) baggy into the sewer.  A middle ageish white guy with a vest with day glow stripes.  Who dat? What’s he up to?  On my way, I noticed all the sewer curbs had dark green dots over other colors.  So very curious.

(Emphasis mine.) Thanks, Ariel! Thanks, Ariel’s mom! Link.

Tonight: Literary Death Match With Eve Batey

Tonight’s edition of Literary Death Match features guest judge Eve Batey, editor and publisher of the SF Appeal.

Eve was an early supporter of Mission Mission, and she’s been instrumental in its continued success, providing us with lots of free advice, journalism lessons, legal counsel, and a shoulder to cry on when times got tough. Thanks forever for everything, Eve.

She’s also got a mouth on her you wouldn’t believe, and a fiery temper to match. And poor impulse control. So it’ll be fun to see her on stage, ripping some poor poet to shreds.

The fun starts early: 6:30PM at Elbo Room, $5.

Parks & Recreation

There is nothing quite like biking down Florida, the sweet yeasty smell of Panorama bread filling the air, unless it is all those things, plus happening upon a burgeoning garden.  This vacant lot, although not a giant pit, is about to become a community space:

The woman in the photo did acknowledge that this is only a temporary setup and that when the lot gets sold the garden will have to dismantle, still, the tub and wooden pyramid seem pretty settled to me. Awesome that the landowner is encouraging of this idea, awesome that someone is taking the initiative, and we can only hope that maybe this economy never turns around and it never gets sold! Who needs a job anyway? I’d rather sit in a fragrant park.

There is a grand opening to be held tomorrow (Saturday), with live music, muraling, demonstrations (surely there is a vacant lot you might like to see turned into a park), and community bonding from 11am to 4pm, and any volunteers to get the park ready beforehand are welcome.

Stolen Bike Found! (For Sale on Craigslist)

ScreenHunter_51 May. 07 16.23

Jen got in touch a little bit ago to share the following harrowing story. Her boyfriend had this bike that they both loved more than anything in the world, and it got stolen outside Safeway in March. Today, it popped up for sale on Craigslist.

Photos in Jen’s photostream prove the bike is their bike. Also:

Things to note: we added the SPD pedals. I don’t have photos of them, but we added them after the fact. (P.S. It’s my boyfriend’s bike, but I bought it and found it and I have a wicked attachment to it, so I obnoxiously call it “our bike”.) You can see the SPD pedals in the photo of all four bikes, but they’re small.

The CL ad mentions that the tires and seat are new. You’ll note those are different from our photo. Pay attention to the photos of the Campy rims, the way the handlebars are wrapped (cables underneath tape), shape of crank, Campy logos on derailleurs and crank arms and whatnot. It is absolutely ours, with no question.

We bought it from Danny – if you frequent the CL bikes section at all, he’s a dude that posts a lot of bikes from San Jose. Cash, no receipt. It’s an old Bianchi. Bought it in December, added pedals in January, kept everything else the same, stolen in March outside of the 16th Street Safeway. The only thing we have is a receipt for the pedals that’s coming from Ohio via mail as we speak. :(

I really don’t want the dude to yank it. I also don’t want to pay $600 for the bike I’ve already paid $600 for. I also don’t want to get shot riding off with the bike. I am so angry I’m just losing my shit – we’re tiny and nonthreatening and I’m not sure what to do.

We talked it over and decided to do this post, if for no other reason than to get the story out there. Advice welcome.

Inside the Blue Macaw

Yelper Milo B. wrote in to tell us a little more about the Blue Macaw:

I stopped in over the weekend for the unofficial opening and the place looks fantastic, it looks clean and cozy.
You can check out pics on Yelp.

As for world music — I have no idea where that rumor is coming from! The management is open to hosting all promoters and all types of shows!

Also, the owner rescues parrots and that is why she chose the name Blue Macaw.

Link. I can’t wait to see The Fucking Champs here some time soon. Thanks, Milo!
