Ponds and Streams in the Mission

mission-district-pond-rivers

I guess I’ve always known there were ponds and rivers and junk in the Mission back before I was born, but this week it came to my attention that maybe at least one of these rivers was lined with abattoirs and ran red with blood.

I asked Telstar Logistics‘  Todd Lappin if he could corroborate this, but the best he could do were these two maps. Commendable cartography both, but they corroborate no carnage. Anyone else have any hot leads?

14-Mission in Pixels (Honk Honk!)

We love David Cole‘s “pixely homage to the greatest bus line in SF, the 14.” Link, or click to enlarge.

And here’s a lovely accompaniment, also courtesy of Cole:

Man looks back at source of liquid creeping up bus floor. Someone else: “IT’S FUCKING BEER. STARING AT IT WON’T CHANGE THAT.” #14muni

Fine Finger

Tonight at Galeria de la Raza, artist Ana Teresa Fernandez will be on hand to talk about her art with filmmaker Lourdes Portillo. Admission is free, fun starts at 7pm. ECDISIS, an exhibition of Fernandez’s work dedicated to the women of Juarez, runs through Saturday. Link.

I like this piece because it reminds me of when God gave me the finger.

Easy Peasy: Report Potholes Online

From the San Francisco Bike Coalition newsletter:

Is your winter riding hampered by new potholes? Now you can get road problems fixed even easier with the City’s new 311 services online. It’s quick and easy to report potholes and other surface defects online, and it’s easier for the SFBC to make sure they get fixed. You can access the Street Defect reporting page here, or start from sfgov.org/311 to see all services.

Important: You can always report anonymously, but in order for the SFBC to track the City’s progress on addressing cyclists’ pavement concerns, please create an account and use “SFBC” as your last name. We get monthly reports and work closely with the Department of Public Works to make sure repairs are done fast and well.

Erroneous!

In the comments section of one of the American Apparel posts, claims were made that a number of local businesses support the anti-American Apparel effort. These claims were questioned. Then one commenter shot back with “What local businesses are against American Apparel? Well, basically all of them,” and proceeded with a bulletpointed list of 30 or so businesses. First of all, all of them? I know where I’ve heard that before. Sarah Palin-style hyperbole can’t be good for any movement. Anyway, Pirate Cat Radio was on the list of businesses that oppose American Apparel, and just now Rick from Pirate Cat wrote in to say:

No we don’t. We allowed the posters to be left on the piano with all the other flyers. We read the information as a PSA but don’t endorse your position.

Link. If you want to tell blatant lies in my comments section, I’m not gonna stop you. It’s a free country after all. Just know, you’re fucking up the discourse.

Programming note: I think Kepi (formerly of the Groovie Ghoulies) is performing at Pirate Cat tonight around 6pm. Stop in to watch in person, or listen live.

Update (Tuesday night): Whoops, Rick’s boss just chimed in to say Rick is dead wrong. Sorry about the confusion. Also, Kepi’s solo acoustic set was rad. He played some classics, a new Valentine’s Day single, and closed with “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid.

Mural Magic

This thing totally had me fooled. When it popped up in my reader, I was like, “Oh my god, that muralist painted himself and his ladder into the mural! Genius!”

Turns out, Sangroncito took a picture of the dude at work and then worked some Photoshop magic. Too bad. Link.

Wintertime Bar Workers Ball

Tonight at El Rio, there’s some kind of Bar Workers Ball. Broke-Ass Stuart will officially be judging some of the festivities. Link.

Mission Street Food Goes ALL VEGGIE

But just for this week, I hope. And there’s a King Trumpet sandwich on the menu again! Link.

The Sky

I’ve been all over the world, but the sky rarely looks as trippy as it often does in the Mission. This photo was taken yesterday by our buddy Mike Chino.

Who Wants Some Bees?

bees-beekeeper

From Craigslist:

I’m looking for a place to keep my bees! It benefits gardens and flowering trees within a four mile radius, and it also offers a tasty supply of delicious local honey made in your backyard! More than a quarter of the bee colonies in the United States were wiped out from colony collapse disorder, putting about one-third of the food we eat at risk of remaining unpollinated.

Please support this urban beekeeper, and help me give these bees a home!

Needs for a hive:

I only require about access to the hive for about 45 minutes to an hour each week.

Bees need privacy! The hive shouldn’t be able to be seen from the street – some beekeepers have their hives stolen!

Sunlight makes happy bees- The hive should have plenty of sunlight – near a north-facing wall or fence is perfect!

Rooftops, backyards, junkyards, fields, bees can be happy almost anywhere!

I can either pay a small leasing fee to keep my bees on your property, or I am happy to offer you some delicious honey in trade. Let me know!
