The History of Pirates

Many Machines sometimes shares exchanges with the kids from 826 Valencia. Here comes one now!

Me: Is that your book about the history of pirates?

5th Grader: It’s not mine, but I was reading it.

Me: Is it good?

Read on for the answer. I really like the answer.

Xmas Miracle!

Praise be praised! Amandine Circumflex got her stolen bike back:

My super awesome husband went out to get some stuff from the drug store for a flu-ish wifey when he ran across a neighborhood kid on my bike.  CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! He reclaimed the bike and now it’s safe and sound.

“Reclaimed” the bike? What the fudge does that mean exactly? If anyone’s missing a neighborhood kid, might want to check the dumpster behind these badasses’ corner drug store. Link.

California Radness

There’s no radness quite like California radness, believe you me. Sexpigeon knows this and wants to share.

3-Speed Rust-Colored Raleigh Stolen From Crocker Amazon Carport

Don’t ask me, I just work here reports:

My bike just got stolen out of my fucking carport.  I inherited it from my grandma who is now deceased, so it’s kinda important to me. I spent all fucking summer fixing it. If anyone sees a 3 speed rust colored Raleigh from the 60’s with a wicker basket and a Brooks jr. seat, please DM me ASAP.

Fire on Bartlett

I’ve been out of town and away from blogging for the better part of three months, so when my little cousins burst through the door earlier shouting, “Dude, there’s a gnarly fire out there!” I didn’t think twice about responding, “Give me my burrito,” and proceeding to sit down and eat my burrito. My blogging instincts have vanished, y’all.

Luckily, local photographer Raun H.’s instincts are fully intact. (Unfortunately, a perfunctory glance at SFGate yields no further info at this time. Maybe in the morning?)

More pics after the jump. Thanks, Raun!

Best of 2009: Best Photo of a Big Teal Door

And the winner is Mike Chino! Happy birthday, Mikey! Link.

Laundry Day Strut

Greg and Petra spotted this scene that among other things confirms turquoise is the new hotness. They say, “I don’t know if it’s the color combo or what, but this strikes me as funny!”

I’d say it’s the color combo, the headwear, the keep-on-truckin’ gait, the confidence — the whole shebang! Great shot, G&P! Link.

Former SF Blogger Builds Something Rad Elsewhere

If you’re gonna be in New Orleans this weekend, do stop in and see former Curbed SF Interim Editor Jimmy Stamp’s new installation. Designed in collaboration with Sergio Padilla and Frederick Stivers, it’s called Orpheus Descending, and it involves projecting multicolored lights and Marlon Brando onto the interior walls of a huge tenty thing over Tennessee Williams’ old pool. It is badass, and part of the week-long DesCours architecture and art event.

Brando’s hands a-gropin’:

P.S. Yep, Jimmy is still the foxiest person at the party, even when he’s wearing some kind of space-age plastic vest.

P.P.S. New Orleans rules!

Bag o' Brew

Wow! Hey this stuff is great! Who votes Kevin stays in China?

Homesick!

I saw a Bender’s sticker on the back of a stop sign in New Orleans this morning and I was like, “Hmm, yeah, I’m getting pretty tired of fried okra and Abita Amber; maybe it really is time to go back to San Francisco.” See you next week!

P.S. Bender’s is still cool, right?

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
