Tonight at Galeria de la Raza, artist Ana Teresa Fernandez will be on hand to talk about her art with filmmaker Lourdes Portillo. Admission is free, fun starts at 7pm. ECDISIS, an exhibition of Fernandez’s work dedicated to the women of Juarez, runs through Saturday. Link.

It’s quick and easy to report potholes and other surface defects online, and it’s easier for the SFBC to make sure they get fixed. You can access the Street Defect reporting page here, or start from sfgov.org/311 to see all services.

Important: You can always report anonymously, but in order for the SFBC to track the City’s progress on addressing cyclists’ pavement concerns, please create an account and use “SFBC” as your last name. We get monthly reports and work closely with the Department of Public Works to make sure repairs are done fast and well.

In the comments section of one of the American Apparel posts, claims were made that a number of local businesses support the anti-American Apparel effort. These claims were questioned. Then one commenter shot back with “What local businesses are against American Apparel? Well, basically all of them,” and proceeded with a bulletpointed list of 30 or so businesses. First of all, all of them? I know where I’ve heard that before. Sarah Palin-style hyperbole can’t be good for any movement. Anyway, Pirate Cat Radio was on the list of businesses that oppose American Apparel, and just now Rick from Pirate Cat wrote in to say:

No we don’t. We allowed the posters to be left on the piano with all the other flyers. We read the information as a PSA but don’t endorse your position.

Update (Tuesday night): Whoops, Rick’s boss just chimed in to say Rick is dead wrong. Sorry about the confusion. Also, Kepi’s solo acoustic set was rad. He played some classics, a new Valentine’s Day single, and closed with “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid.

This thing totally had me fooled. When it popped up in my reader, I was like, “Oh my god, that muralist painted himself and his ladder into the mural! Genius!”

Turns out, Sangroncito took a picture of the dude at work and then worked some Photoshop magic. Too bad. Link.

Tonight at El Rio, there’s some kind of Bar Workers Ball. Broke-Ass Stuart will officially be judging some of the festivities. Link.

I’ve been all over the world, but the sky rarely looks as trippy as it often does in the Mission. This photo was taken yesterday by our buddy Mike Chino.

Needs for a hive:

I only require about access to the hive for about 45 minutes to an hour each week.

Bees need privacy! The hive shouldn’t be able to be seen from the street – some beekeepers have their hives stolen!

Sunlight makes happy bees- The hive should have plenty of sunlight – near a north-facing wall or fence is perfect!

Rooftops, backyards, junkyards, fields, bees can be happy almost anywhere!

I can either pay a small leasing fee to keep my bees on your property, or I am happy to offer you some delicious honey in trade. Let me know!

Last week we contacted American Apparel asking for their comments on the controversy, and the company responded with an open letter to the residents of the Mission. The letter talks about company history, business practices and intentions here in the neighborhood. Note that they preface everything with, “[I]f the community doesn’t want us there, we have no intention of forcing our way in.”

An excerpt:

Our first store was in Echo Park, a small artsy district of Los Angeles, which is a lot like the Mission. Since we opened the store in 2003, the neighborhood has flourished with new independent businesses. The City pays closer attention to the area, keeping it cleaner and safer than it ever was before without denting its original charm and flavor. Our store is a permanent fixture in the community now, just as much as Burrito King and the infamous tranny hairdressers are. Not every location is like Echo Park or Valencia St., but for the ones that are, we’re perfectionists about getting right.

So how can they get it right?
