Mission Street Art 1977: Star Wars Droids Promote Iron-Rich Foods in Lieu of Necco Wafers

Best thing my “mission district” Google Alert has yielded in a while: This cute bit of time warp courtesy of Bonnie Burton at The Official Star Wars Blog. Way back in 1977, muralist Xavier Viramontes and some cohorts from Galeria de la Raza painted C-3PO and his counterpart R2-D2 into this unauthorized nutritional PSA on a street-level billboard space on Bryant. Life in the Mission

Said it before, will say it again: There’s something perfect about the way the Mission looks when photographed by Carlos Reyes. Blurry, dirty and romantic. These shots were culled from four recent photo spreads; click each to see the post from whence it came (and view the thing in its entirety). Carlos uses a Samsung Blackjack 2.

Butter, Hip-Hop and Gentrification: Mission Street Food Returns!

Mission Street Food returns this week, and this time they’re putting their twist on southern-style soul food, with the help of guest chef Tia Harrison. Menu includes: catfish, grits, Smoked Duck Beignets, BBQ and PBQ. Link.

Brazilian Street Art

Sangroncito splits his time between the Mission and Brazil, and takes stunning photos of both places. This is the latest from the latter. How about something like this on the Dolores Park bathroom building?

Free Blinky Bike Lights Tonight at Valencia and Chavez

Great, a week after I spend $70 on lights so that my friends can do Critical Mass with me in Sacramento (where front and rear lights are required by law if riding after dark), SFBC and Muni give away free blinky bike lights. The event goes from 6-7pm tonight at various locations throughout the city. The Mission spot is Valencia and Chavez, in front of St. Luke’s. SFist has the details here.

Fashionable Footwear in the Mission

By my count, the last eight Fashionist posts all come from the Mission (and most of them feature closeups of shoes). Are Missionites more fashionable than the rest of the city? Click each to view the full post.

Heather Is Nice But Not Too Smart

Britta from Jeweled Platypus just added this work of art to her Flickr stream. I like it because it’s another lesson in looking on the bright side. Feeling down? Bummed about your friend’s shitty attitude? Give it a couple days, or a long weekend maybe. You’ll feel better. Link.

Fun With Panoramic Photography

We love the charm of lo-res photography (hell, we’re fittin’ to go totally resless up in here), and panoramas are always a gas, so we were thrilled to hear that Burrito Justice just got a new panorama application for its iPhone. Click to view the whole things (or scroll way over if you’re in a reader), or LINK.

DeSoto Love on Shotwell

Hey all!

It’s not a tale of parked scooter woe… just the opposite, really… but I had a perfect moment with a 1957 DeSoto i found parked on Shotwell at 26th St. over the weekend, and you might like the pics:

Hippie Parents Don't Really Care About Your Wellbeing?

Imsoooconfused lost his Amtrak tickets, couldn’t make it home for Thanksgiving, and got into a frightful three-way phone conversation with his maybe-hippie parents. But hopefully this thrilling video reenactment makes it all worth it :(

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
