Saturday Night Music Pick: Meat, Tits and Guns

Oakland’s Ryan Christopher Parks is playing some music as part of a reading at Cafe La Boheme tonight. The theme of the show is “Revolution 1968.” Says Ryan:

In preparation I’ve decided to rename some of my songs with titles like, “Hippies didn’t end the Vietnam War, I did”, “When the revolution comes I’m coming to your house with a crowbar”, and “Meat, tits, and guns”.

I can’t wait.

Update: P.S. It’s an early show, like 6ish.

District 9 Supervisor Front Runners Indistinguishable from One Another?

SF Gate just published a little examination of the District 9 supervisor race:

The front-runners to replace Supervisor Tom Ammiano are all well-known Latino men in their late 30s to mid-40s who have solid records, strong endorsements and similarly far-left political beliefs.

Police Commissioner and attorney David Campos, neighborhood activist Eric Quezada and school board President Mark Sanchez have nearly indistinguishable platforms.

Is it true? Are fortyish, revolutionary Latino dudes the rich old white dudes of the Mission? More importantly, will this be a real race? Link.

The Real Valencia

Anybody not following Plug1 and Plug2 and their adventures in Spain is seriously missing out. I especially like this shot of two crusty old Spaniards relaxing in front of a spray-painted Scissor Sisters reference in an alley in Granada. The pic at top is Valencia. (Click either to enlarge.)

Plug1′s Flickr photostream is here. WHATIMSEEING is here.

Bob Dylan's New Collection is Badass

NPR has this exclusive stream of Bob Dylan’s new collection of outtakes. It is good. And during these troubling times it is particularly comforting. Link.

Cruel Landlord Smears Blood, Feces on Tenants' Door

Says the Mission Anti-Displacement Coalition blog:

The Corado family are one of the last remaining long-term Latino working-class tenants in their building. The landlord has tripled the rent on the other vacant units and will resort to anything to force the Corado family out of their home. She has locked them out of their home three times in one week, smeared blood and feces on their front door, and falsely accused them of physical assault almost causing a wrongful arrest of an innocent tenant.

The organization is throwing a party tomorrow evening (featuring tamales and chocolate) to support the family. Link.

High-Falootin' Bar Tartine Line Cook Goes Nitty Gritty

Via our inbox:

TONIGHT (THURSDAY): High-falootin’ line cook from Bar Tartine goes all nitty
gritty and shit.

Anthony Myint is subletting an antojitos truck in what, hopefully, will become a recurring Thursday night event.

He’ll be peddling an assortment of sandwiches, each served on a piece of
homemade scallion flatbread. Among them, the highly anticipated PB&J (Pork
Belly and Jicama) and the busty vegetarian King Trumpet (wild mushrooms and
triple fried potato).

WHEN: Thursday night, 8pm-2am. Watch Biden dispense of Palin and then hop
down to 21st and Mission to still your beating heart.

Um, prices are reasonable, dude. $3-$5.

Support local line cooks.

I’m there. Thanks, Andrew.

'Well-Edited' Mexican at El Metate

SF Gate published a brief review of El Metate just now, in which they call its cuisine “well-edited.” As a professional writer, I love the editing process perhaps more than anything, so I’m definitely gonna get behind this new use for this particular turn of phrase. Katie made me an extremely well-edited curry chicken sandwich today, by the way. Link. (Thanks, JimBeam)

Gas-Free Fridays

Throughout October, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is sponsoring Gas-Free Fridays, an effort to maybe get us one babystep closer to being off oil once and for all. Every Friday this month, an Energizer Station will be set up at a designated corner, where cyclists can stop, congregate and load up on snacks and fair-trade coffee. This week’s corner is 12th and Market, but a future one will be in the heart of the Mission. See you on the bike bus!

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
