Suicide Girls signing books at Mission Comics and partying at Benders tonight!

If you’ve ever wanted to meet some Suicide Girls up close and personal, tonight’s your chance:

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, some of your favorite SuicideGirls will be signing their hard cover photo book of tattooed pinup girls entitled Hard Girls, Soft Light at Mission Comics in San Francisco. Make sure to get to Mission Comics early because the first 25 people to have a copy of Hard Girls, Soft Light signed will receive a free yearlong membership to SuicideGirls.com.

After the book signing join local SuicideGirls as well as Rigel and Radeo for an official after party at Bender’s Bar where bartenders will be slinging a special SuicideGirls cocktail all night long. Interested in being a SuicideGirl? Introduce yourself to the SG model coordinator, Rigel Suicide, and show her what you are made of.

Check out all the details for the book signing here, and the afterparty here, and try not to be too much of a creep!

Carnaval will go on this year

According to The Examiner Carnaval will happen, despite being in debt due to a combination of poor fiscal management and rising fees, at a cost of $300,000, scaled down from $900,000 last year. The organization that puts it on is around $170,000 in debt and the city intends to find out why.

Winona Ryder-themed party to feature Winona Ryder movies and a Winona Ryder-themed auction

It’s tonight! And it all supports the production of a new issue of Decades! Here’s the deal:

DECADES Magazine hosts “Winona Forever: A Winona Ryder Double Feature” at Lost Weekend, featuring the films Heathers and Reality Bites.

DECADES, a SF based publication covering food, fashion and gore, is ready to print Issue No.2, “The Petaluma Issue.” But we are just a few $$ short. We would love your support and to see you at this beautiful screening.

There will be food from Satellite Republic and an auction with fabulous prizes:

* A Napa or Sonoma wine tasting with DECADES contributor and Nopa Wine Director Lulu McAllister
* Winona inspired art from contributor Kati Prescott
* Your very own croquet party hosted by the editors.
* A weekend retreat to the DECADES Bed & Breakfast in Squaw Valley. Snow! Hot cocoa! The Olympics! Wooo!
* A Petaluma road trip: a grand adventure to the Chicken Capital of the World and Winona Ryder’s homeland.

Tickets are $10. PLUS there will be complementary “Wino Forever” temporary tattoos that will make you feel like Johnny Depp. Magazines and Winona T-shirts will also be available for purchase. Proceeds help us print the second issue, so we look forward to seeing you there!

RSVP and invite your friends!

Carnaval is in trouble

After 35 years of the annual celebration in the Mission, the neighborhood cultural institution is in danger of not happening this year.

Alright

We all know the Mission is changing. Rapidly. It’s annoying to talk about because it seems like it’s the only conversation we can have these days. We’re all part of the change in some way. I know I am, in more ways than one. As we build new traditions and landmarks, and find new ways to celebrate our various cultural heritages (I’m looking at you, midwesterner drinking a PBR in the park) I think it’s worth taking a little time to consider aspects that we love about this neighborhood that we may be losing. I moved to the Mission before I knew what it was, but I fought hard to stay here because of what I discovered. One element that made this neighborhood so desirable and infinitely adventurous to me is that it had such a varied history, and it carried pieces of all times with it. Looking around, block to block, building to building, I could see the marks left by all the different people to come through here. And I felt like there was room for me to leave my mark too.

I could go on, but I’ll spare you this time. All this is just a way to say that for many people, myself included, Carnaval is the Mission. As are burritos. As is street art. As is whatever your favorite thing about the Mission happens to be. Carnaval is expensive to put on and it may not be able to happen anymore. El Tecolote has a good article about the recent struggles here. To learn more there is a community meeting tomorrow night (3/19) at Brava Theater.

UPDATE: The Examiner says it will happen this year.

‘Ping Pong Nite’ means ping pong and soul DJs *every* Thursday at El Rio

El Rio has ping pong now! And from now on, Thursday night is PING PONG NITE. Here’s the deal:

Here we go! Opening night! A grand new tradition!

DJ Wam Bam Ashleyanne (http://wambamashleyanne.com/) will make us dance. Two ping pong tables (one inside, one on the heated and covered back patio) for traditional ping pong playing!

Debaser’s 5th anniversary party tonight celebrates the music of the year 2000

This morning I awoke to the sound of about 50 Facebook notification dings in a row. Quite a symphony. I thought the USA was under attack or Matt Damon died or something, but, no, it was just *everyone I know* going nuts about tonight’s special anniversary edition of Debaser.

Here’s what’s cool: Debaser is the ’90s party, right? Right. But tonight, they’re breaking the rules and getting down with the year 2000. DJ Jamie Jams tells us what to expect:

we’re going to try and mega-mix through all of the various versions of late 90′s-early 00′s fear of the future.

from post-hardcore, pre-emo garage type stuff like the white stripes / hives / refused, to late period indie stuff like belle and sebastian / moldy peaches / magnetic fields, to french robot house stuff like daft punk / cassius / les rhythmes digitales, to early electro-clash stuff like miss kittin / peaches / fischerspooner and a sizeable dollup of futuristic halftimed hip hop ala timbaland / neptunes.

we’ll probably throw a couple of other uber-specifically dated signposts in there like an early mash-up or two. probably a good deal of ghetto-tech. oh yeah, and the obvious big time mainstream type stuff… radiohead, bjork, beck, jay z, missy, outkast, dre, eminem, snoop. maybe even a little jt and britney.

Holy mackerel. RSVP and invite your friends!

Also, Jamie recommends we enjoy some classic Conan:

Haçeteria, the best dance party in town, returns to Slate this Friday

DJ Tristes Tropiques of the Haç crew enumerates some of the party’s highlights:

+asphyxiating amounts of fog
+blinding lasers (usually in a good way)
+a semi-outdoor smoking cage
+exquisite restrooms with top notch plumbing (not a joke)
+loud music from 1992, some of which might be decent or nostalgia inducing
+somewhat-ok drink deals (i think there’s a pabst tall boy deal) &
fancy cocktails

Bango! I never have as much fun dancing as I do at Haçeteria. And Slate is awesome btw, regardless of the space’s previous incarnations. RSVP and invite your friends!

And then get dizzy to this jam by this month’s special guests:

SF Berlin-Style Ping Pong League now accepting new teams for spring season, beginning Monday at SoMa StrEat Food Park

The SF Berlin-Style Ping Pong League‘s been going strong all through the winter at Dear Mom, but now spring is here and the league’s numbers have grown quite a bit, so they’re moving to the big, enclosed, heated barn at SoMa StrEat Food Park. Here’s the deal:

The SF Berlin-Style Ping Pong League has a new season starting up next week. It’ll be every Monday for six Mondays in a row, this time in the big (enclosed, heated) barn at SoMa StrEat Food Park!!! Beer, wine, sangria — and *tons* of food trucks to choose from.

Form a team, join up, meet the other leaguers, make lifelong friendships, fall in love, perfect your ping pong skills, look forward to Mondays for the first time in your life, eat lots of good street food, win big prizes at the championship, etc., etc., etc., repeat, repeat, repeat! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ [link]

Sounds good! (Also, in addition to the food trucks, there’s a SKEEBALL TRUCK.) Register your team (or just yourself) here.

Here’s a look inside the barn:

Say goodbye to Kelly Malone in style at Speakeasy this Saturday!

When people ask me to describe what the embodiment of a true San Franciscan would be, I simply point to Kelly Malone, whose contributions to the community through such institutions as Indiemart and Workshop SF have provided opportunities for all sorts of local artists and designers to find success in honing their craft.  Which makes it especially difficult to come to terms with the fact that she’s leaving the city!

But have no fear; she’ll be back eventually, and in typical fashion, she’s going out with one last bang:

So, Speakeasy and a ton of generous folks are helping us throw back to swamp jugs and old timey magic throughout Speakeasy’s Brewery and you can also hang in the taproom that we just built out (hence the theme) Here is what we’ve got in store:

- Speakeasy Beers, 100% of sales donated at Brewery bar & portion in Taproom
- DJ Sarah Delush, Malila Young & The Toursit!
- DIY Carnie Games & strong man challenge
- Skeeball, ping pong, cornhole
- COTTON CANDY
- MOBILE Kissing booth- feel free to wear it and hustle. Or
smooch me up in there please:)
- Epic raffle & booth of rad goodies, pretty wares, jewelry for
sale
- Photobooth by Orange photography
- Pretty Parlor & beauty folks doing Prohibition styling, mustache waxes & beard trims so you look the part
- Nails by the awesome Party Nails!
- Tattooed Lady (temp) tattoo booth thanks to Tattly
- Carnie food booths from: Southpaw BBQ, The Voodoo Van, The Galley, McVickers Pickles, Black Jet Bakery, Batch Baking, cotton candy & more
- Bands: Hungry Skinny
- Babes everywhere! I think like 20 couples now have met at parties ive thrown, one getting married this year. As well as endless shameful hookups. I hope this brings more.

So toss on your best 20′s gear…fancy or swamp jug & overalls! Hug and smooch the shit outta me before I go. Come out and have a blast! Im hoping to come back in the Summer at some point if all goes well♥

Rumor has it there may also be a booth where you can throw pies in the faces of some of your most-hated local bloggers to repay us for all of the terrible posts we’ve ever written!  Check out ALL of the details here.

Lion Dance wiv me

Rice Paper Scissors‘ monthlong Lunar New Year celebration continues this Friday at the legendary Verdi Club! Here’s what’s up:

Growing up, the Lunar New Year meant dinner with the family and lots of li xi (both great things.) But why not celebrate the Lunar New Year like you would for the January New Year?

It’ll be everything you know and love about the Lunar New Year: red envelopes, traditional dress and new year foods — but done with a modern take.

Red envelopes will be filled with Asian candy. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their best ao dai or cheongsam to sport in the photobooth. Vietnamese street food snacks will be available purchase.

The best part? Professional lion dancers will come join the dance party — all combining our favorite Lunar New Year traditions starting Year of the Snake our way.

Let’s party, B! Tickets, menu details and more right here.
