Mission Street Food just posted a special notice regarding tonight’s dinner:

lots of vegetarian substitutions available, which we didn’t post before, so it’s a good night for veggies

Princess Pub Crawl

princess_pub_crawl

Emo princess is emo.

Okay, I know this isn’t the Cacophony email list, but who doesn’t love getting drunk in costume?  Besides, is there a better way to relive that time you threw up all over Valencia St. at 4pm during SantaCon while dressed as a homosexual elf than by dusting off your best princess costume and getting lit on Christmas in July?  500 Club, this Saturday at 8:30 PM:

Are all of your friends talking animals? Do you spend your day cleaning up after 7 very short men? Do you dream of your prince coming one day? Do you often find yourself sitting in a dark room wearing a crown, rocking back and forth, and screaming “BUT MOMMY I AM A PRETTY PRETTY PRINCESS!!!” ? Do you want to laugh at a bunch of people dressed up doing a bar crawl?

Well then the Princess Pub Crawl is just for you!

Join us Saturday July 25th dressed as your favorite Princess, Villain, Ugly Step-sister, or Prince. Yes boys this pub crawl is for you too! We’ll be hitting all the good bars in the Mission that have photo booths (and a few bars without in between!)!

Bring your friends! Everyone is welcome!

Important Points:
1. We’ll be starting at 500 Club around 8:30 PM. A map of the crawl and contact numbers will be given out before the pub crawl. Be at 500 Club before 10:00 PM or else!
2. If you do not dress up be prepared to wear an embarrassingly pink fluffy princess crown provided by the organizers. Costumes are required.
3. There will be prizes for the best dressed so bring it.

Sushi Bistro Opening at 24th and York

sushi bistro opening soon

Sushi Bistro, a popular sushi restaurant from the Inner Richmond district, is opening up a second location at 24th and York this Thursday, July 23rd.  I’ve never been there before since west of Twin Peaks is practically dead to me, but the yelp reviews sound very promising.

UPDATE: Check out their awesome menu. “AVOCADO AND TUSCAN’S DRIED TOMATO WRAPPED IN A SEAWEED, FLASH FRIED AND SEVERED WITH SPICY SAUCE.”  Caps lock fail, avocado win.

Coming Soon: Yotopia

Evidence suggests that an “organic frozen yogurt” place called “Yotopia” is opening soon next to Latin American Club at 22nd and Valencia.  Hopefully it is not related to the Yotopia in Costa Mesa, because that place sounds like it really sucks (the signage suggests they are different).

This block of 22nd St. is rapidly going through a change.  Over the past few weeks, we have seen the opening Escape From New York Pizza (for better or worse, at least there is food readily available after 2am that is not a burrito) and Oz Smoke Shop (which seems to embody every stereotype of a hookah lounge imaginable).  Now we have an organic frozen yogurt place?  I cannot tell if it is going to turn into bridge-tube-n-track central or maintain its current status as a Mission-Bernal-Noe breeding ground.  Keep your eyes on this one; what happens on 22nd could easily unfold on the greater Valencia corridor.

Obviously the interior is still under construction, but the inside is starting to look pretty sterile.  Hopefully they hire a local muralist to spice the place up.

Real-Life Google Maps Already Vandalized

Reader Junk Thief brings us an update regarding Google’s “Favorite Places” advertising campaign: “I just posted images of what the local ‘critics’ thought of Kevin Rose’s take on the St. Francis.” (link)  That didn’t take long…

Reader Kati Jackson brings us another great shot outside of a market.  Unfortunately they forgot to put Jameson and Captain Crunch on the list.

Free Drinks for Nerds at The Marsh

foursquare_themarsh

Amit Gupta reports that The Marsh, the venue and cafe at Valencia and 22nd that looks like an abandoned warehouse, has become the first place in San Francisco to start giving out free drinks to frequent users of the social network, Foursquare.  Apparently anybody will get $2 off at the box-office just for using it once.

Hey Bender’s, when will you start a similar promotion?

Parks & Rec. Department Looks to Legitimize Street Food

The SF Examiner reports that, in an effort to raise revenue, the Recreation and Parks Department is considering issuing permits to local restaurants who want to sell food in the city’s parks.  Tragically, the food with be expensive and probably not help you cure you drug-induced Dolores Park munchies:

“Each vendor would have to pay the department a minimum of $1,000 per month, and there would likely be provisions in the contract that healthy food is served.”

The Crème Brûlée also weighed in:

The Crème Brûlée Guy, a local food vendor who operates outside city regulations and declined to give his name, said it’s admirable that the department is trying to encourage more street vending, but the $1,000 monthly cost is “pretty steep.”

“It would be hard for an independent vendor to make that monthly payment,” said the Crème Brûlée Guy, who has operated in Dolores Park in the Mission district, adding that he intends to investigate purchasing a permit. “It would be a lot easier for a restaurant owner to just send out an employee to sit there for eight hours.”

Empanada War! (Or, Empanada Love Fest)

ScreenHunter_06 Jul. 15 16.01

Presumably in response to Sunny’s recent feature on Chile Lindo Empanadas, reader Linda just sent in the following laundry list of reasons why we should also check out Venga Empanadas:

Made in house and baked not fried.
Mushroom (thick cut, sauteed)
Beef
Spinach
3 Cheese and Onion
Ham and Cheese (breakfast empanada?!)
Corn and Red Bell Pepper
Chicken

Jaime Maldonado is the young heir to the institution and trying to breath new life into the timeless panaderia. I love this place. Have no relation to the folks but go there often because I love the food and I really want it to survive this economy. The panaderia, like the barbershop in the African-American neighborhood, is the heart of the barrio.

Some interesting things about the place?
-Blood Orange ice cream
-Steamed Mussels in a panaderia?!
-Pozole
-12 kinds of Nicaraguan tamales
-Pan de Muerto and Pan de Reyes
-And they’re offering a price buster menu. Pay $30 and eat one meal (breakfast or dinner) per day from Monday through Friday. Menu changes daily.

Thanks, Linda!
