Anyone know where to get pulque?

I’ve never tried pulque, which is an opaque white agave beer from Mexico. It’s evidently available in cans as well as served in restaurants. Anyone know where I can get some in the neighborhood or the Bay Area? The closest I’ve found is a taqueria outside Sacramento, which incidentally looks awesome.

Update: coincidentally, my favorite cocktail blogger just did a post on Pulque!

Shredded duck burrito

Looks like Daly City’s Koi Palace has caught on to this whole burrito fusion thing. Check out the “Shredded Duck Burrito”:

Its “tortilla” is a pan-fried scallion pancake, and its insides are peking duck-style shredded duck and cucumber slivers. There’s plum sauce for dipping.

It tasted great, though calling it a “burrito” might be a stretch. Where are the closed-off ends? It’s more of a wrap, I’d say.  Still, I haven’t seen a duck burrito since Mission Chinese’s Chinito (RIP) which brought back some fond memories.

And before you go complaining, “waaaah don’t tell people about my favorite ‘secret’ dim sum spot” ’cause it’s too late. The lines have been crazy long there for years.

I shampooed with Rolling Rock

Just got a very important message from our pal Al:

Alex: duh
me: why
Alex: cause I’m supposed to be givin up beer

Mission Vegan: Brrrunch!!!

You guys, Hella Vegan Eats is doing a pop-up brunch RIGHT NOW at Dear Mom (until 5 PM). The menu looks amazing, but particularly the waffle fake fried chicken sandwich thing. Even better, you can eat brunch, have a few drinks, and then stay for dinner because Hella Vegan Eats is also doing tonight’s pop-up dinner! I’d totally do that, but I’m going to relive my emo youth tonight at the Fillmore (don’t judge me). I went to their last pop-up dinner at Dear Mom and it was fantastic. I highly recommend the Hunk Hunter sandwich.

If you can’t handle being back in a bar this morning, you can also get vegan brunch at Dante’s Weird Fish. Yes! Dante’s Weird Fish is open for brunch again and I’m extremely happy about this. I haven’t been for brunch yet, but the menu looks good, no? Their other restaurants, St. Francis and Boogaloos, are also reliable vegan brunch options. Okay, I need a (Worcestershire-free) bloody mary stat.

Mural on former Deli-Up Cafe is being removed, presumably in preparation for forthcoming Rhea’s Cafe

“There was a woman heckling the poor painter about destroying art,” says our pal Jess who walked by just now.

Yeah, that’s a shame. But…. RHEA’S!!!!

Pop-Up Jubilee starts tonight and continues through Labor Day

Do-it-yourself lamb burger

Mission Community Market is back this week with another Chef’s Market Box, a pre-prepped bunch of locally sourced ingredients you pre-order today, pick up tomorrow, and whip into a meal at home:

This week, you’ll be cooking a recipe from Lauren Kiino, the Executive Chef and Owner of Il Cane Rosso who was also Delfina‘s Chef de Cuisine for eight years. Her recipe this week is for a pasture-raised 4505 Meats lamb burger with cherry tomato salsa over mashed potatoes with a mixed greens salad. All the produce included in this recipe is local and organic, sourced from Happy Boy Farms, Winters Fruit Tree, Twin Girls Farm, and Blue House Farm. Plus, if you like a little something sweet after your dinner, add an artisan 70% Madagascar dark chocolate bar from Dandelion Chocolate in with your order.

Drink of the week: the Stranger

I’ve been working my way through the new cocktail menu at Dalva’s Hideout and I think I found the winner. Lemon, gin, cocchi, and sort of bitters float (see pic) make it just the right amount of boozy and mouth-puckering. A healthy dose of Becherovka, a cinnamon and nutmeg-y Czech liqueur that tastes like a Christmas at your drunk grandma’s house, puts it over the top. With hits like this, the Hideout will surely remain my favorite place in town to get a fancy cocktail from a bartender who is not wearing suspenders.
