Historic Photos of the Mission Right Before the Coming of Gozer

Therese (and that’s pronounced “Thur-eece”) stumbled upon some kind of archive (or possibly a seriously old back issue of Tobin’s Spirit Guide) full of antique pictures of San Francisco. This one is the gem, as it depicts the calm with which the hard-nosed San Franciscans of old faced the certain horror of a brush with an interdimensional oppressor like Gozer the Traveler.

And then, after the Destructor was finished, survivors gathered in Dolores Park. Where else?

How Long Before KKKatie Appears in the New York Times Crossword Puzzle?

In case you didn’t know, there’s this:

Reader Michael P. didn’t know, until yesterday’s paper:

Did you know about this? I only found it because it was a clue in Tuesday’s NYTimes crossword (the answer to which I only got because of the crosses): “1918 song girl whose name was sung with a stutter”.

Think “2010 graffiti girl whose stuttery name got her convicted of a hate crime” is coming down the pike? I guess we’ll find out soon.

Somebody Pleeease Put Some Clips on YouTube!

Fabulous news! Television historian David Enos has uncovered official (?) synopses from episodes of 100 Van Ness, the SF-based ’70s sitcom we mentioned a couple weeks back. Here’s the first:

“Win Some, Lou’s Son” Lou’s estranged son re-appears.  Candace discovers a new recipe for her specialty, Christmas cake, and the kitchen gets out-of-hand.   Reed finds out that his new job as a Shakespearean actor is no walk in the park.

Retro Reels of Sutro Baths

Wow, look at these old motion picture reels of the Sutro Bath ruins we discovered in the vault!  They must be super ancient, like from the 20s or something!  (Click the photos to view the shorts)

Wait, it says here that the facility didn’t even become ruins until it burned down in a fire in 1966!  Perhaps these are from the 60s then?  I don’t know, they seem kind of too old to be from the 60s.

Wait a minute, is that the Cliff House?  Stupid vault!  Anyway, should you find yourself with nothing to do on a nice sunny day, might I recommend that you bike out to Sutro Cave for some Goonies-style speulunking action?  Just be careful not to fall off the cliff!

I Miss 12 Galaxies

I was on that weird balcony at Hotel Utah looking down at this okay band Petracovitch the other night, and couldn’t help but fantasize I was on the awesome balcony at 12 Galaxies looking down at some amazing band.

Reread the tirade I wrote when I first learned 12 Galaxies was going under, if you want.

The Tiki Men Live at the Purple Onion, 1993

I wrote about these guys last year, after I’d heard the sad news that we’d lost their leader. (And I stand by everything I said.) Yesterday, I learned of the existence of this recently uploaded terrible but wonderful video of them rocking the Purple Onion some 17 years ago.

Now go buy their record. It is as real a classic as you’re ever gonna find.

The Old Academy of Science

Remember this place? Everybody’s all gaga about the new one, but I lament that youth of today, on their field trips, won’t get to eat lunch with their buds in that central fountain courtyard.

I remember one of my classmates bought an Aerobie Orbiter at the gift shop, and we all watched in horror as he started flinging it right there in the courtyard. We were sure it’d be on the roof in seconds flat, but somehow it never happened. He managed several epic orbits before a security matron shut him down with a big “NO BOOMERANGS!” We went back to our carrots and juice.

On a later trip, I was a 7th grader, but somehow I’d managed to make friends with our class’ 8th-grade T.A., and I ditched some dumb tour to hang out with her in the courtyard and talk about skateboarding and Primus. That was cool.

(I was cleaning up my desktop just now and found this screenshot I took a few years back.)

You’re not reading Hippy Kitchens on a regular basis? Then you’re missing out on photos like this one and tons more. And I bet some of our parents are in there somewhere, right?

You’re welcome.

San Francisco TV Flashback, 1978

Sexpigeon just published this evidence of some kind of rad CBS sitcom from the late ’70s. IMDb doesn’t seem to know much about it. Wikipedia neither. What gives? A failed pilot? Something about it CBS is trying to keep hid?
