How to take revenge on people that talk during concerts

Go to a sweet show at El Rio this Sunday; help fund cancer treatment for a really good guy

Kyle Lesley is a San Francisco audio engineer, social activist, and all-around excellent human being. He is also a person who was recently diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma. Given that he has helped out countless folks in the city’s independent music scene with his know-how, it only makes sense that a bunch of musicians got together and decided to throw him a party this Sunday at El Rio to help pay for his treatment and some other necessities.

From 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. this Sunday, Nov 10, a donation of $5 to $20 gets you five bands and a DJ, plus, you know, everything else good that’s usually at El Rio (alcohol, a patio). If you’re lucky, Kelly McFarling will do some Whitney.

Lou Reed might have spent some time in San Francisco and made an album of songs about it?

Halloween continues this Friday with Still Flyin’ performing as New Order for American Tripps at the Rickshaw Stop

So I know that today is October 31st and all, but let’s be honest; this whole week is Halloween.  It started last weekend and doesn’t let up for a minute this weekend, as you’ll see when one of San Francisco’s best bands dons their New Order costumes and hits the stage while ping-pongers dance around in circles.

When I first heard about this show, I thought, “Wow, one of my favorite local bands is performing as one of my favorite all-time bands at one of my favorite venues during one of my favorite activities.  This night must have been made for me!”  And that’s before I heard that Nick Pal’s new band is also making their debut:

This is the official American Tripps Halloween/Dia de los Muertos party! We’ll have Berlin-style ping pong on the main dance floor for most of the night, and DJ Beauregard on the decks most of the night, but we also decided to book some additional entertainment this time. And it is gonna be epic:

Still Flyin’ performing as NEW ORDER
→ Honeymoon in Canada (debut show), the new group featuring Chex Otakan (SF karaoke legend) and Nick Pal (The Kablamies, Readyville)

Plus we’ll have skeeball (courtesy of Joey the Cat) and foosball and mini-ping-pong up in the mezzanine, drink specials, and a COSTUME CONTEST.

So yeah, I guess I’ll see you there tomorrow!  Check out all the details here.

This ain’t no mecca, man

Sure, you know all about Green Day starting out at 924 Gilman, and you probably know the Rancid song this night is named after, but the history of Bay Area punk goes a lot deeper than that. And, at long last, our pal DJ Trigger Cut, who grew up here and over the years has amassed a seemingly endless collection of Bay Area punk classics all on vinyl, is gonna teach us all about it! Check it out:

This Place Is Fucked!
Happy Hour at The Knockout with Beth behind the bar.

DJ Trigger Cut is digging deep into the archives to play “classic” Bay Area punk from The Dils to Onion Flavored Rings. Come hear music from people who used to live in the Mission, but can’t afford to anymore!

Come worship with the Naked Cult! Experience the Mr T Experience! Suckle at the teat of the Swingin’ Utters! Get a deal with the Rip Offs! Come for the alcohol, stay for the Panty Raid! We’ve got 50 Million ways to satisfy your desires!

Plus, “Beth behind the bar” means LOTS of good drinks all happy hour long. Can’t wait! RSVP and invite your friends!

Ryan Christopher Parks reviews the Tom Waits show

Tom Waits performed at the Bridge School Benefit shows at Shoreline Amphitheater over the weekend. Our favorite Oakland bandleader/Oakland Facebook troll Ryan Christopher Parks was on the scene:

All the best Halloween stuff is happening at Rickshaw Stop

First there’s Pop Scream 2013 with an LCD Soundsystem cover band AND a Strokes cover band:

Then there’s the American Tripps Halloween/Dia de Los Muertos Party with Berlin-style ping pong and beloved local band Still Flyin’ performing as NEW ORDER:

And then, it’s the Total Trash Halloween Bash featuring THE SONICS! PERFORMING AS THE SONICS!!!
