Last Chance for Stumptown Coffee at Four Barrel

Reader mcas reports that tonight is our last chance to get Stumptown Coffee Roasters coffee at Four Barrel:

Dont know if its worth a post but today is last day of stumptown coffee at 4 barrel. They start serving their own roasts tomo

You can buy the lbs of their roast now.. but they are finishing off their stumptown inventory today… So as of tomo, sf will again be stumptown free.

I’m not really a coffee drinker myself, but I’m told yes it’s worth a post. Thanks, mcas!

Update: Chris K. responds, “not so!  dynamo donuts on 24th and york uses stumptown.”

Secondary update: mcas defends his original statement: “Nope, Chris K. Dynamo has gotten their Stumptown from Four Barrel’s contract… and they will also be receiving 4 Barrel as of now.”

826 Valencia Kids Toast Obama in the New York Times

826-valencia-barack-obama

Back on November 4th, local tumblelog Many Machines noted that the kids in the writing program at 826 Valencia had been just ecstatic about Barack Obama. See that report and subsequent discussion here.

Yesterday, the full story behind this ecstatickness appeared in The New York Times. The piece includes a slide show of portraits the kids did of the president elect, as well as some of the results of a writing assignment is which students were asked to write a letter to Senator Obama. From 8-year-old Mireya Perez’s list of the first 10 things he should do as President:

1. Make everyone read books.
2. Don’t let teachers give kids hard homework.
3. Make a law where kids only get one page of homework per week.

Haha! Link. (Thanks, Chase!)

Also, will somebody please hurry up and license the above drawing by 12-year-old Dean Lancaster and put it on a t-shirt?

Tonight: Sketchfest in the Mission

Fridays and Saturday through the end of the month, The Dark Room is home to “SF Sketchfest in the Mission,” a showcase of up-and-coming talents.

One such talent, The Birthday Boys, take the stage tonight. The above video is funny enough, but the thing that makes me think this could really be worthwhile is the following message I got last night from a comedy industry professional with every reason to be jaded and unimpressed:

Am currently at intermission for the TV Funhouse show and a group called The Birthday Boys opened. They were great (I was laughing a ton in the back – and I wouldn’t bs about comedy).

Showtime is 10:30pm. Also of note is an 8pm show featuring musical guest Uni and Her Ukelele.

[Administrative note: This is my first time using vodpod. Please drop me a line if it does anything weird.]

Monday Night at Amnesia

amnesia-mens-room

Toshio Hirano killed as usual. This was the first time in a while that I’d seen him perform sans backing band, and it was a welcome return to basics. Those old Jimmie Rodgers tunes never sound so good as when it’s just Toshio, his guitar and his yodel.

This was also my first experience with Amnesia‘s new men’s room. It’s much nicer, much cleaner, but still no soap, still no paper towels. What gives?

$8 All-You-Can-Drink Beer

Sexpigeon reports that Truck is hosting a neighborhood cleanup fundraiser this Saturday from 4-8pm, at which patrons can pay just $8 for ALL-YOU-CAN-DRINK BEER. Please binge responsibly. Link.

Tuesday Night at Pop's

young-broke-beautiful

Tuesday night at Pop’s is my new  favorite place to be. It’s not too packed, pitchers of Pabst are $5, and the bartendress leads some epic Journey and Thin Lizzy singalongs. It also helped that I was there with Broke-Ass Stuart, who taught me that the singer from Thin Lizzy is half black and that since they’re Irish they pronounce their own name “Tin Lizzy,” and that thin lizzy maybe means dildo.

Carlos Goes To Fisherman's Wharf

What a riot! I don’t know, it’d ultimately probably be pretty annoying if we had these guys caravanning around the Mission, but it might be fun for a minute. Motorists honking at them as they try to left turn off of Valencia onto 22nd, in unison. Carlos Reyes has a whole day’s worth of Fisherman’s Wharf adventure, here.

Barfing Buddy Facilitates Flirtation

What a find! I hope these two reconnect:

Your friend puked all over projectile style – w4m – 22 (mission district)

i told you i was going to do this. so hopefully you believed me and have been checking missed connections religiously since last night(friday the 9)….doubtful but worth a shot. i saw you through the window, i was with some friends, there was definitely eye contact. then your friend started puking everywhere! it was actually sort of incredible because he didn’t even have to hunch over, it was like a hose or something. it was sort of hypnotizing…..anyways after we finshed eating my friends and i came to talk to you all about the intense puking. still there was eye contact, but you seemed really shy. your other friends were talking a lot more, maybe you couldn’t get a word in. maybe you didn’t want to. anyways, i’m curious, i thought you were really cute. i’ve never been the type to post a missed connection, but i told you i would and i’m true to my word. so hopefully you or one of your friends gets this and gives you the word or something, worth a try right?

Link. Also, somebody should definitely write a love song about this and call it “Projectile Style.” (Thanks, Katie!)

Supervisor Campos Looks Into Racial Profiling

Reader zinzin sent this in, saying, “first real article i’ve seen on something Campos is doing.” SFExaminer.com reports that one of the new Supervisor’s first acts in office has been to call for an official city investigation into complaints about traffic stops:

“My view is, with something like this, you want to be as transparent as possible,” [Campos] said. “You want to give the Police Department a chance to explain what they’re doing and give the public a chance to express their concerns.”

Details on the American Apparel Hearing (NSFW)

UPDATE (3/11/2010): We noticed that this post has been getting a lot of traffic, and we have deduced that it’s because of Sasha Grey, so we decided to add this visual foreword hipping you to a number of other beautiful and talented women we’ve come across:

Click it:

A notice in the window at 988 Valencia Street confirms the city will hold a hearing on Thursday, February 5, at 1:30pm, to consider the viability of an American Apparel in the Mission:
