New Philz menu means cheaper prices

Our pal Hae Eun just stopped by her favorite neighborhood coffee shop and noticed that the shiny new menus at Philz also display prices that are 50 to 75 cents cheaper than before.

I’d be pretty damned stoked if I was a coffee-drinker!  But I’m not, so meh.

A better way to celebrate the 49ers win than shooting guns into the air: KaeperTats

Just stick these suckers onto your guns and you’ll be tossing touchdowns and running into endzones like your favorite QB.  A word to the wise:  you might want to break out the body waxing strips before affixing these on!

Retail is dead (for honey sellers)

Looks like Her Majesty’s Secret Beekeeper has folded their storefront on 20th, so you’ll have to go online to order all your urban beekeeping supplies. The real travesty is losing the pop-up chicken petting zoo that they kept in the front. I’ll miss this handsome fella:

What’s next? My money’s on an artisinal crumpet cafe called “The Fawn & Badger”.

Slow Pour: 111 Minna opens “Red Door Coffee”

While great spots like Machine Coffee, Sightglass, De la Paz, and Ma’velous ensure that the west side of SOMA is happily caffeinated at work, it is difficult to find a decent cup if you work further east toward the bay.  This week the meet-up gallery 111 Minna has improved the situation with the launch of “Red Door Coffee.”  The shop is offering espresso drinks of a mission favorite, Fourbarrel.  Hours: 7:30am–3pm.  Lots of seating.

It’s Friday and one coffee is not enough to keep you going until Tripps.  We suggest you also stop by Special Xtra for a second cup on the way back to work.

Drink of the week: cranberry cider, cider generally

So cider is a thing now, right? Given the tendency of microbreweries to put creativity above all else, I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner. Think of all those years we wasted on mead and barley wine when we could have been drinking all sorts of cider.

The easiest way to get wacky with cider is move on from apple and pear, and since the first two adjectives that should describe any good cider are “crisp” and “tart,” what better place to start than with cranberries? The Two Rivers cranberry cider, which I tried over the holidays at Shotwell’s, was dry and refreshing, and the cranberry taste was surprisingly muted as opposed to the overpowering sour-sweetness of the juice. They’ve since moved back to apple on tap, although they still have a few bottles of Two Rivers pomegranate in the fridge. If you want to try the cranberry, I think they still have it at Rosamunde, so get it while you can.

Drink of the week is brought to you by Poachedjobs.com.

Teen Challenge fundraiser?

You might know Teen Challenge on Valencia as a Christian alcohol/drug abuse recovery support center.

What you might not know is that it’s also a place you can score a set of sweet rims at a decent price.

Blueberry taco

See them in there? Little smudges of purple in with the seitan. It was kind of like when you put jam on your Monte Cristo sandwich I guess.

Only on the specials board at Bender’s. Keep your eyes peeled.

(Thanks, Jess!)

UPDATE: Vic got a pic of the specials board…

Keep a lookout for these bicycles that were stolen when someone forgot their key in the garage lock

One of our favorite neighborhood bartenders recently suffered the misfortune of having his bicycle as well as those of some of his neighbors stolen from their garage in the wee hours of the morning today.  What makes the situation even  shittier is that it wasn’t even their  fault:

Early this morning, my neighbor left his key in our garage door and all of our bikes were stolen. Police report has been filed and we do have insurance but I’d really like to get my bikes back.

  1. Mission Bicycle Valencia 53cm Frame matte black with Red Anodized B43 Rims, Paul Crank and distinctive Red saddle with white polka dots and upside-down white riser bars.
  2. Motobecane (naked) 50cm yellow frame with bronze rims and Coaster brake. Yellow addle, 6″ riser bars and basket
  3. Giant OCR Two 50cm – New soma seat, cinelli stem & drop bars.

Forgetting your key in the lock (or dropping it right in front of your door) is something I ALWAYS worry about accidentally doing, so I know how crappy this must seem.  Hopefully someone will spot these before it’s too late!  Let them know if you discover anything here.

Update from the owner!

I should add that a neighbor dropped the key while fixing a blown fuse in the middle of the night and at least two of the bikes were locked (there were 7 bikes stolen total).

We’re checking security tapes at the end of the street to try and get an id on the vehicle or its plate.

And yes, that middle bike is hideous by design… it’s my beater bike and I made it stick out like a sore thumb specifically so it wouldn’t get nicked. Oh well.

Also stolen:

  • 1012 Cannondale CAAD10 white with red and black accents
  • 2008 EAI Bareknuckle green with red Chris King headset
  • Masi Special Fixed – metallic blue/green with Rev gold deep V wheelset

Back in my day…

And you thought this week was cold. Check out Shotwell and 20th around this time in 1887:
