Oldies Night goodies

Oldies Night at the Knockout was a blast as usual. Here are a couple gems that really made the grade:

Primo spun this one I think a total of three times, because the crowd demanded it. It got better every time, and I think it’s about to get even better RIGHT NOW:

(And, don’t forget, Primo’s bringing his skills to Mission United tonight. And there’s free food.)

Free Humphry Slocombe popsicles tonight at Mission United

*While supplies last! So get to Public Works early!

More reasons to get there early:

  1. Ryan who used to chef at Broken Record and Bruno’s will be dishing up free barbecue.
  2. $2 tequila shots and $3 beers from 8-10.
  3. Admission is only $5 before 10. $10 after.
  4. Primo goes on pretty early I think.

CONTEST: Win tickets to Mission United featuring DJ Primo

Is there any way Primo could not be your favorite local DJ? Primo spins at Oldies Night, Nightbeat, 2 Men Will Move You, Lost and Found, Soul Night, and probably elsewhere. You could dance your ass off to Primo’s work every night of the week! AND he makes the best flyers (see above) by far.

So even though you can see him any time you want, this Mission United appearance on Saturday might be a little special because it’s a one-off event, it’s at Public Works which is a pretty different venue than most of the places you’ll see Primo (the bathrooms are so clean!), proceeds go to cool local charities, the event combines music with food and art and fashion, there will be a handful of other local DJs there that you might not be so familiar with, and it all lasts til 3AM!! Epic party!

Plus, we’re giving away three pairs of tickets. Leave a comment below telling us why you love Primo the best. Whoever gushes the hardest wins. (We’ll judge the winners based on merit, and the contest ends at noon on Friday.) Go forth and gush!

RSVP and invite your friends via the official Mission United Facebook page.

Check out Primo’s Flickr stream for lots more art and photography.

CONTEST: Win Tickets to Mission United!

Check it out! Public Works in a couple weeks is throwing a party devoted to the Mission. Several of your favorite DJs will be there (Yo, Primo!), along with good food and drink, and a fashion show. And it’s eight hours long!

Public Works presents an 8 hour event celebrating our melting-pot neighborhood, San Francisco’s Mission district. Cherry-picking some of the best in music, performance, art, fashion and food. Mission United brings the sights and sounds of our favorite hood under one roof.

What’s more, we’re giving away free tickets. They say they’re celebrating “all things Mission,” so peruse the lineup and leave a comment below letting them know if they’ve forgotten anything key. The two best suggestions (as judged by us based on merit) will win a pair of tickets each. Contest ends Monday at 5pm.

See the full lineup, RSVP and invite your friends via the event’s official Facebook page.

BREAKING NEWS: Cranberries Cover Band ‘Ocean Spray’ Is Back!

I was so bummed when I missed them the last time they played! I thought they’d never ever return! But all I had to do was wait two-and-a-half years.

And what’s more, they’ve reunited in order to help celebrate (and fund) the forthcoming Clueless stage adaptation!

See you guys there!

Saturday Sunset Epic Once Again

I happen to walk by this spot a lot, and I’ve even made a post almost exactly like this one in past, but yesterday’s sunset was just too amazing to ignore.  Couple this with our amazing summertime weather while the rest of the country is freezing over, and San Francisco once again solidifies its claim as the most jealousy-inducing location in the United States.  Take that East coast!

Go watch your Superbowl, America.  We’re gonna be outside ALL DAY.

KQED Visits Noisebridge

Thanks to all the community support, Noisebridge hackerspace is here to stay for a while.

But what exactly is a “hackerspace”, you ask? Aren’t hackers just a bunch of Australian terrorists that are trying to destroy America? Don’t worry, these hackers are the gentle kind. They just like making stuff, and would much rather show you how to correctly solder a circuit than steal your facebook password.

KQED recently took a look inside the Mission’s own Noisebridge, which happens to be one of the pioneering facilities of it’s kind in the United States. Check out their video for a tour, interview with the co-founder, and a bit of the history of hackerspaces.

"Probably Stolen" Tandem Bike and Owner Reunited

A nice little story to brighten up this needlessly gloomy June morning!  After the call went out on Monday about a probably stolen tandem bike that was found abandoned after Sunday Streets by a kind stranger, sleuthy MM readers discovered a similar Craigslist ad and the real owner eventually came forward.

Great work to everyone involved in uniting this happy couple and their trusty tandem bicycle!  We here at MM haven’t felt this useful since helping to reunite kidnapped Mr. Pickle with his delicious sandwich-purveying Mama Pickle.

McLaren Park Makeover

Despite my essay about McLaren Park being awesome, it could surely benefit from a $30,000 makeover.

Sears wants to foot the bill for one such makeover, for one lucky park somewhere in the United States. Problem is, it’s a contest, and McLaren is currently getting its ass kicked by some park in Chesapeake, Virginia. Your votes can change all that. Vote McLaren!

Thanks for the tip, Yatima! More coverage at SFist.

P.S. That hazardous old swing set is kind of badass though, don’t you think?

Punk's Not Dead?

Most of us were pretty well united in opposition of some spurned scenester’s defacement of a nice mural a few weeks back.

Reader dan derek, on the other hand, took one look at this thing and proclaimed:

punks not dead! sf needs more graffiti writers like this

Hmm.
