This girl Genny, a friend of a friend, was sitting with us last night at Bender’s. Some of us had “The Elvis” (pictured above). Genny left early, to catch a flight to New York.
In the morning, SF Appeal and others reported that Genny’s flight had been diverted to Colorado because of a mechanical problem. Genny mentions via text message that the mechanical problem was a FUCKING FIRE:
I was asleep for the fire. But it was scary when they asked for military personnel to volunteer, and then told us to sit in a defensive position when the pilot says, “BRACE, BRACE, BRACE.”
Everyone’s okay. Except those of us that ate “The Elvis.” We all have stomach aches still.

Mission Local reports:
A man was shot near 24th and Mission Streets at approximately 12 p.m. in front of Mission Emporium. The victim was shot in the hip and taken to the hospital.
Police are on the scene interviewing a woman who was with the victim at the time he was shot. A man who claimed to know the victim said that he is 19 years old.
Authorities are searching for the suspect who they say ran southbound on Mission Street.
Mission Local sends word from a tipster:
Was just ordered by police to evacuate my apartment. There’s a bomb squad truck and about 10 police cars across the street at the Salvation Army building. They’re clearing out the entire block, I’ll keep you updated.
UPDATE: Somebody tried to donate a cannonball to the Salvation Army and somebody thought it might be explosive? Read all about it.
Says the LA Times:
The two bright-red dumpsters, 16 feet long by nearly 6 feet wide and filled with greenery, have been placed in a busy downtown neighborhood where they throw a little shade, elicit regular double-takes and fill curbside spots that otherwise would go to cars.
The grandly named “parkmobiles” were rolled out earlier this summer, the first in a fleet of itinerant oases in one of America’s densest cities.
My favorite detail is the lifelike sculpture of a modern San Franciscan included with every parkmobile. So realistic! Here’s hoping the taggers don’t muck ‘em up. Read on.

Mission Local reports:
Despite the third deadly shooting in the Mission in less than a week, Police Captain Greg Corrales said that “residents and visitors should feel safe.”
“[Police Chief Greg Suhr] has given me all the resources and personnel that I need” he said. “We have a lot of officers out there. Other than this unrelated homicide, it’s been pretty peaceful since the two gang shootings.”
It’s unlikely that gang members would want to retaliate with a heavy police presence on the streets, he said.
Read on. (Oh, but there was also another shooting.)
