Popeye's Pandemonium

Carlos Reyes peeped the scene earlier this evening. Cheap chicken? Hot jobs? Link (and beware the autoplay).

Eye Heart Street Art

This week on I Heart Street Art, we compare a big famous SoMa mural to a tiny little SoMa tag. We conclude that both are pretty heavy. Also, we share a bunch of research involving science and chemicals and symbols:

Word on the street is that these gorgeous garments will be for sale at the merch table at tonight’s Casiotone for the Painfully Alone concert at Bottom of the Hill. Why? Unclear.

World Building

lyrelaff

Whose Fault Is That yesterday published an extensive interview with Chris Wayan, builder of worlds. WFIT asks him where he discovered world building, to which he responds:

Science fiction and fantasy. The term is common in sf circles, though of course they usually mean building a world entirely of words. On the physical side, I think I was most influenced by Poul Anderson and (more recently) Kim Stanley Robinson in his Mars books; they showed how planetary-scale factors interact to shape quite local matters–even the shapes of bodies. On the sociological/cultural side (and also presentation and style!), Le Guin and Tolkien were my role models. They all kept it just words on a page, though.

This dude goes way beyond words on a page. Note the lyrelaffs in the graphic above. WFIT recommends losing yourself on his website for hours on end some time. Read on. (Full disclosure: I haven’t actually read the whole thing yet, for it is looong and I am fresh out of Adderall.)

Ribity in Berlin

ribity berlin 1

Our good buddy Edward from b e r l i n ‘ just spotted something unreal: Ribity in Berlin! Edward fills us in:

Came across this tag in Charlottenburg. [...] More to come as we find them.

By the way, German frogs say “QUACK”= quackity.

On a not entirely unrelated note, did I mention my favorite German brand name? Not “Froggy”, or “Froglet”, just plain “FROG” brand detergent.

Quack! Ha!

Police Ponder Parking Spot Party

sunday streets 2

Kati Jackson snapped this shot of the SFPD trying to decide how to deal with Streetsblog’s Summer Street Party yesterday in the wake of Sunday Streets. Says Kati:

They said they were there to help keep the bike lane clear. Then they told a couple of us that we needed to start packing up and clearing the street. Then they left immediately and never came back.

Uh, this begs the question, and maybe it was answered at this shindig yesterday, but, couldn’t we do a less-expensive version of Park(ing) Day every Sunday, when parking is free, for like miles and miles and miles?

Is Girl Talk Legal?

So asks the new documentary RiP: A Remix Manifesto, premiering in San Francisco at Mezzanine on Thursday at 7:00pm as part of the SF Film Society’s bimonthly SF360 Film+Club program.

Girl Talk (who I’m sure everybody is tired of me gushing over, over and over) is the film’s “central protagonist,” but we’ll also hear from bossa nova great Gilberto Gil, Creative Commons dude Lawrence Lessig and Boing Boing bro Cory Doctorow.

Director Brett Gaylor will be there, and as per the “Club” portion of the event, some prominent DJs and VJs will perform following the screening.

McLaren Park Kicks Ass

07-18-09_1539

I drove through McLaren Park once before, several years back, and concluded it seemed like a pretty great place to get shot or stabbed or raped. On Saturday, I went back for the Mission Creek Music and Arts Festival‘s all-day free concert at Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, and it was all very pleasant. Right off the bat a skunk crossed my path, so I felt like I was really getting back to nature.

Also, Jerry Garcia Amphitheater! Who knew there was an amphitheater in there!? And it’s a pretty nice amphitheater with lots of seating and a big grassy hill! Kudos to the festival’s organizers for finding this spot and recognizing that it would be an ideal location for a day-long showcase of local and touring musicians. Here’s hoping more festival organizers recognize this in the future.

Rubies were pretty good.

Kelley Stoltz is kind of starting to look like Elvis Costello.

The festival continues through July 25th at various venues in San Francisco.

Oh and here’s a better picture by someone with a actual camera.

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
