Stop Your Sobbing

I’m totally going to start sending the the full-size version of this photo by potential past to people when they’re doing something I don’t like. Like telling me to turn it down. Example:

Hater: Could you turn that down please?

Broke-Ass Stuart, Monica The Intern and a Variety of Bodily Functions

A couple weeks ago I sat down with Broke-Ass Stuart and Monica the Intern (his intern) at Homestead. Mostly we ate a ton of peanuts and pondered the travails of the working girl across the street from the bar.

At some point, I was able to wrangle an interview out of the situation, and today you can read it on Decider. In it, we learn why a guy still employed as a busboy (or waiter or whatever) needs an intern. Also, bodily functions. Link.

Turreted Cadillac Vandalized!

Everyday Photos just posted evidence that a lawless gang of freebooters has tagged our neighborhood’s beloved turreted Cadillac. Where’s the graffiti task force when you really need them? Link.

Death of an Old Mexican

death-of-an-old-mexican

Back before the internet, there was this thing called a newspaper. Iron Davy Cole this morning was perusing the archives of one such enterprise, The New York Times, when he came across this stirring account of the life and death of one Jose Alvarado, a piratical mercenary who spent his final hours at Mission Dolores in 1875.

To read the the whole worthy-of-a-Warren-Zevon-song tale, see Cole’s post, “Come for the epic war stories, stay for the last sentence”.

(NOTE: Maybe if its editorial staff had had the presence of mind to refer to the characters in last week’s graffiti spree as “a lawless gang of freebooters,” the San Francisco Chronicle would still be around today.)

Uncle Mildred

plug1-mildred

Plug1 just wrote in to talk up a street artist he’s into:

im surprised i dont see more Mildred on MM. mission based writer, has a blog here.

i emailed him a long time ago to get an interview and he politely declined saying “naw man, i just wanna get drunk, paint, and skate”. i couldnt really argue with that logic and the lifestyle seemed admirable — so i left it alone.

anyhow, i see him all over The Mish, stickers, quick throwies, etc.

this pic is from lower Valencia near 14th.

What a mantra though, right?

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
