Did someone accidentally/intentionally leave a tub of chalk on the block between 17th and 18th on Valencia? I’m looking at you Chalk Visions. Last night the new sparkly sidewalk was blanketed with scrawlings from dozens of people, or one person with severe schizophrenia. So how do Mission folks choose to express themselves?

Check it out for yourself on 17th and Valencia. Hell, add to it if you want, but it’s probably a BYOC affair at this point.
These cute little burnouts have been popping up around town reminding me to blaze my daze away. Seen here in Hayes Valley, but a French one hit me up in the bathroom at Dalva right before Mario jumped in and took care of business. Got it?
Fellas, you really shouldn’t miss Indie Mart. I am in full support of any event where you can get a kick-ass bloody mary (from thee Parkside) and walk around while beautiful, fashionable ladies are obliged to introduce themselves to you and excitedly hand you their contact information on creative stationary. Plus, for the gals: Broke Ass Stuart will hook you up with as many stickers as you can stuff in your organic tote bag. Flickr’r joda36 has a great photo set of the festivities.
Looks like the next one is going to be in Alamo Square on August 21st. Table fees start at the low, low $30, so sign up early. Details here.
More photos of hott crafts after the jump.
The owners of the building at Erie and Mission that got Banksy’d back during the artist’s spree through the city in promotion of his movie were very excited about having a famous piece of art on their property. Now, it seems as though they are taking it a step further, as reader Milu explains:
I heard they were going to do a mural around this Banksy piece, well, it looks like Chor Boogie has christened the beginning of it.
Now, I’m not exactly sure what he might have in store for the rest of this piece, but that obese robin is a fantastic start. Poignant commentary about the inequal economics of art? At the very least, way better than getting Kaiser Soze’d. Curious to see how this all turns out! I wonder if the context will be preserved, which you can see in the before shot captured by Travis LoDolce below:
(Thanks for the pic, Milu!)

Someone street-arted this morose girl all over the poster wall near 23rd & Valencia. Way to steal SILVIO’s thunder, dick.

There’s a new place to get your new bag in The Mission. Former Chrome bagmakers (bagsmiths?) have opened their own bageria, Mission Workshop, located right down the alley from Esta Noche.
They design their bags (and jackets, coming soon) right there in the ol’ warehouse, and have them manufactured in the U. S. of A. Colorado, I believe. Anyway, the bags are big and cool looking and weatherproof and seem expensive but are probably somewhat reasonable. $275ish? $239? For made in USA? And hardy? I dunno. I’m not that picky about apparel.
The coolest thing to me is that they’re planning monthly art shows, film screenings, and/or BBQ’s. In fact, this Thursday (7/15) they’re having a free BBQ and beer bash from your afterwork time to the late evening time (“happy hour time”). Plus art from Nate Smith and Caleb Sheridan. Should be sweet.
As a side note, doesn’t it seem like our neighborhood is racking up quite a list of logos and products/companies bearing it’s name? Is someone keeping a list? It’s rivaling my home town in its bumper sticker visibility.
Jesse Hazelip, the man behind a hundred rad pieces of street art we’ve all drooled over, is going to be exhibiting a bunch of stuff at SFMOMA starting tomorrow. And for free! And there’s a party! From the official press release:
The work for this installation involves large scale mixed media pieces on wooden panels, each commenting on contemporary sociopolitical issues in a cause and effect statement. Hazelip’s installation will be up from July 10 – November 13, 2010 and can be seen from the street 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The SFMOMA Garage Windows are located at street level 147 Minna and 150 Natoma St. (between Third and New Montgomery Sts.). The artist will host an opening reception at The Earth Bar at Temple Nightclub, located at 540 Howard Street on Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 2-7PM.
Kudos, Jesse!
