Report: Opening night of the Converse Represent shows at Slim’s was awesome

Our pal Stella took all these pics and provided this report:

I got there just for the end of the She’s and didn’t have time to take a photo but they just graduated from high school and were adorably rock and roll. Tamarin was witchy dark and mesmerizing. Metz surprised me the most and fucking rocked hard core and totally brought it. They kicked ass. DIIV was awesome. They are the most adorable rock stars. Zachary Cole Smith is like a mix of Link from Zelda and The Little Prince, such a babe. Also the music was rad. Black Rebel Motorcycle club was pretty cool too though their light show made me dizzy.

Thanks, Stellz!

Berlin-style ping pong + *dance music* tonight in the Lower Haight

I guess you put your paddle in your boot when it’s time to dance! Here’s more info:

This is our first party back in SF after our very successful tripp to New York City! We had a great time at PIPS in Brooklyn, but we’re *real* happy to be home.

To mark this occasion, we booked DJ Hyperballoyd, who promises a nonstop barrage of heart-pounding dance music. Expect Daft Punk, Hot Chip, M.I.A., LCD Soundystem, plus sick dance remixes of your favorite pop hits.

RSVP and invite your friends!

Tequila and Mission Chinese Food, together at last

Free, but you have to RSVP.

If you like Berlin-style ping pong parties but wish they were every week instead of just once in a while

Join the SF Berlin-Style Ping Pong League:

Prizes, friends, fun, and LOTS of food trucks. And a beer-and-wine-and-sangria truck.

For a look at last season’s final meet and awards ceremony (which included a block of tickets to the Treasure Island Music Festival, among other things), see this photo album.

SF DocFest starts today!

SF DocFest, SF Indie’s 12th annual documentary festival, starts today and runs through the 23rd. The festival kicks off tonight with the west coast premiere of Spark: A Burning Man Story at the Roxie Theater.

Notable and relevant film screenings include:

And there’s plenty more, so be sure to check out the full schedule (or just The Roxie’s schedule, if you don’t want to leave the neighborhood).

Community meeting to discuss Mercado Plaza tonight!

We’re always super excited by the prospect of closing street access to cars in favor of pedestrian thoroughfares to help promote community engagement, and the proposed Mercado Plaza on Bartlett between 22nd and 21st Streets is no exception.  On that note, the Mission Community Market is hosting a meeting tonight in the Women’s Building at 6pm for you to tell them what you think about it:

Thanks to YOUR support, we secured funds for the Mercado Plaza project. Now let’s see what the future could look like at an open house hosted by the San Francisco Planning Department, Department of Public Works, MTA.

Improvements could include new pavement, safer sidewalks, market stalls, better lighting, street graphics, a marquee, and more. But it all depends on your input! Please come and tell us what you think!

Mercado Plaza Open House
Wednesday, May 29 6:00-7:30 PM
The Women’s Building, ROOM A3543 18th Street, San Francisco, CA 94110

Check out all the details here.

UPDATE!!! Apparently I was mistaken and the proposal actually isn’t to close the street to car traffic permanently, but rather to make it a better public space; safer, cleaner, and with a better street/sidewalk.  So, to reiterate, the plan is NOT to eliminate all parking and all car traffic, but it’s still gonna be rad!

Singin’ and Pingin’ returns to Z Space this Friday!

I’d probably go to a watching-paint-dry party as long as it was held at Z Space, but dude, this party sounds even better:

You’ve demanded it for nearly a year now! This month, SINGIN’ & PINGIN’ makes a triumphant return to its original venue, Z Space, the grand performing arts theater in the heart of the northeastern Mission!

DJ PURPLE (http://djpurple.com/) has gained notoriety and momentum since last we appeared here, so the DANCE KARAOKE show will be even tighter and more awesome than ever. And there will be FOUR TABLES for maximum BERLIN-STYLE PING PONG ACTION!

Full bar and lots of dance floor! And FREE BEER and FREE HARD CIDER for the first hour! Plus, for some reason, “The Endless Slope” indoor snowboarding machine, courtesy of Adventurous Sports (http://adventurous.com/).

Can’t wait! RSVP and invite your friends!

Save Esta Noche!

Esta Noche is in trouble!

Last year the Board of Supervisors passed laws that can make it harder for some small businesses to afford their permitting and license fees. Unfortunately, Esta Noche will have to pay for all their licenses in one bulk payment which is already one month late.

We need to raise $9,000 in the next two weeks in order to keep San Francisco’s only Latino queer bar open. We need your help!

Here’s what you can do:

Donate: Every dollar up to $9,000 will go to Esta Noche to help them keep their doors open. Any additional monies raised will be given to El/La (a Trans-Latina nonprofit in The Mission)

Come to our party: Join us May 18th as local queer DJs, drag performers, and politicians come together to save Esta Noche!

Tell your friends: Spread the love. Share this on Facebook and via word of mouth!

Beastie Boys Night at American Tripps starring DJ Jamie Jams and special guest bartender Jay Beaman!

Almost exactly two years ago, a Beastie Boys cover band from Texas or something came through SF and played a set at the Knockout. They were okay, but the real star of the show was DJ Jamie Jams of Debaser, who opened and closed the proceedings with selections from his exhaustive collection of songs famously sampled by the Beasties. This Friday, he does it again.

Plus, the American Tripps crew has some other reasons for a Beastie Boys party:

We’re doing our first party in NYC later this month (May 31st) at PIPS in Williamsburg, so we thought what better way to get in gear than with a BEASTIE BOYS NIGHT right here in SF? No sleep ’til Brooklyn!!!!!

So we booked the award-winning DJ JAMIE JAMS of Debaser (’90s night) and Last Nite (’00s night) fame, and he’s spent the last few days putting together the perfect Beasties-themed set, full of hits by the boys themselves as well as lots of the songs whose *samples* provide the backbone for many of the most beloved Beastie jams.

And then we booked special guest bartender JAY BEAMAN (of Dear Mom and Thieves Tavern), and he’ll be slinging Beasties-themed drink specials!!!!!!! (Including BRASS MONKEYS and A BOTTLE OF CHATEAU NEUF DE PAPE!)

Into it! Click here to RSVP and invite your friends, and listen to some tracks Jamie’s thrown up on the wall as a preview!

Fair Oaks Street Fair is this Saturday!

Fair Oaks is one of the prettiest streets in the Mission, and it has hosted the Fair Oaks Street Fair every spring for the past 37 years — just look at those rad ’70s spring outfits from one of the first ones! As per usual, it’ll be five blocks (21st to 26th) of neighborhood garage sales and food stands from 9am to 5pm, all benefiting local nonprofits (Jamestown Community Center’s youth programs, and the Fair Oaks Community Coalition’s alley project).

Read on for more information and more cool old photos.
