Watch these two babes unleash the fury tomorrow night

The Beijing Guitar Duo is playing for FREE tomorrow night, March 23rd at the Community Music Center on 544 Capp.

Watch as they shred circles around your 3 power chords with impeccable classical technique. See what tens of thousands of hours of practice and probable parental abuse can do. I wouldn’t wanna be caught in a hellish guitar duel for my soul with them, that’s for sure. Check ‘em out:

They start at 6pm.

Pillowfight Sunday at The Make-Out Room

Pillowfight, the new Dan the Automator project, not the generic fight with pillows. Mr. The Automator, a music producer, may be known to you from such gems as Dr. Octagon, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Deltron 3030, Gorillaz, etc. Seriously, amazing body of work. Tomorrow, 3/11, he will be performing with Kid Koala, Micro mtns and alongside Emily Wells as Pillowfight.

The Make-Out Room is at 3225 22nd Street, between Mission and Bartlett. Doors open at 7pm.

Check out the Pillowfight preview, featuring art by Facebook quintillionaire David Choe.

Mission Mission’s 5th Anniversary Party!

Sorry for the short notice, but we only had five short years to plan for this thing. Here’s the deal: our first post ever was on February 14, 2007, so we figured we better celebrate somehow, and the nice folks at Dear Mom were kind enough to offer to help out. For the month beginning tomorrow and running through March 14th, they’ll be offering the Mission Mission Anniversary Special, a High Life and a shot of Fernet, for $6. And tomorrow evening we’ll all be there, so come say hi. We’ll probably buy you a drink.

RSVP and invite your friends!

Latin American Christmas Carols

This coming Friday the Lower 24th Street Merchants and Neighbors Association is putting on the first annual Las Posadas.

Join in 24th Street’s second annual community celebration of Las Posadas, a Latin American tradition of the Christmas season. Meet at the corner of 24th and Capp streets at 5:45 on Friday, December 16 for a procession and singing. The procession will finish at the Mission Neighborhood Centers building, 3013 24th Street (on the corner of Harrison Street), where there will be pinatas, more singing, and free food and drinks. This is a family-oriented event, but all people are encouraged to come. For more information, contact info@lower24thstreet.org .

Julie and Lee fundraiser

Most of you know the work of photographer Julie Michelle. MM has been following her I Live Here SF project since the beginning.

[Julie Michelle self portrait]

Recently Julie’s partner, Lee, had a massive stroke. Well, we all know how quickly medical bills can rack up. Thankfully Lee is on the road to recovery, but it’s a long one and both of their lives will be consumed with the process for a while. To at least be able to help ease some of the financial burden, their friends Tucker and Analise are throwing a fundraiser at the San Francisco Motorcycle Club, located on Folsom near 18th Street, on Sunday, 12/18.

Tucker explains:

We’re hosting a party at the San Francisco Motorcycle Club (shot by Julie Michelle here) on Sunday the 18th from 3:00 to 7:00. There will music, drinks, good people, and a raffle. Donations will be gladly accepted in person, but if you can’t make the event, there is a ChipIn campaign already running here. There is also a Facebook page for the event here.

Now, I know Julie and Lee, and they are two of the most giving, generous people I can imagine. If you can help them out, even a little bit, I would be ever grateful.

Mission Holiday Block Party Tonight!

If you haven’t taken care of your holiday shopping yet, what better way than to take a look at some of your favorite local neighborhood businesses tonight as 40 different places from 14th all the way to 26th Street will be showing off their stuff from 5-10pm!  If memory serves from past incarnations, some places will probably be serving (free!) drinks while you shop too!

Check out the Facebook page here.

Un-ironic skate dance party this Tuesday

DocPop just scored some rollerblades. Remember those? Well does the hit SEGA game Skitchin’ jog your memory? Thought so. Anyway, that means he’s heading to Cellspace’s skate night this Tuesday. Maybe you should too, if you’ve got a pair and you’re into synchronized dancing:

Back when I was growing up in Modesto, CA, our yearly reward for being above a 2.0 GPA was a trip to Roller King. I can still remember the bruises from repeatedly falling on my locker keys, but rolling around in a big circle to Ray Parker Jr.’s Ghostbusters and couple skating with Gabrielle made it totally worth it. Skating is fun.

Before you go and grab a head band and a pair of neon leg warmers, be aware that this party is un-ironic. I would tell you what that means, but I’m not even convinced I know what “ironic” means anymore.
