The ‘anti-gentrification underground’ thinks Pop’s might become a Bi-Rite

With the future of Pop’s uncertain (be sure to read Broke-Ass Stuart’s heartfelt remembrance), rumors abound. A reader wrote in last night with a query:

I am a frequent reader of missionmission (clap clap- I love the site) and I heard a rumor I thought you might know something about- is the (awesome) pops bar on 24th street turning into a freakin’ birite? I heard some buzz about it and figured you had your ear to the ground on these sorts of things.

Well, cool, thanks!

I said, “Where’d you hear this rumor?”

A few friends who are pretty plugged in to the anti-gentrification underground were buzzing about it the other day over drinks. I don’t expect that they’d be open to telling me where they heard it- they are pretty private about that stuff- but it definitely got my wheels turning so figured I’d ask.

Shrug. Thanks, anyway.

Sounds pretty solid.

UPDATE (Monday, December 2, 2013): Bi-Rite wrote in to tell us that this rumor is false.

Celebrate the launch of BFF.fm at the official BFF.fm launch party!

BFF.fm, the Mission-based radio station all your friends seem to be DJs at, has been broadcasting for a couple months now, and the programming is getting stronger and stronger every day!

Here’s founder Cosmic Amanda talking about her grand plans for BFF, from a Q&A we did a few weeks back:

Our main focus is supporting emerging and underground artists, and we’ll do that not only by spinning their tunes, but by reaching out into the local music scene and forging partnerships with bands and labels. I want us to become a go-to resource for spreading the word about awesome new music.

My goal in creating this station is to build a professional-quality studio in an amazing space that inspires DJs to put forth their very best content. This has been a labor of love for me, taking up all of my free time and money, but even in just the short amount of time we’ve been around the response has been amazingly positive and I can’t wait to see where we can take this.

Read on for lots more Q&A, and then RSVP and invite your friends!

The condo complex attached to the New Mission Theater is called Vida and here is a short film about it

Basically it tells you a bunch of ways you can live your life, and shows a lot of cool scenes around the Mission, and some mockups of what the complex will look like:

CONTEST: Win tickets to a record release party curated by Sonny Smith (of Sonny & The Sunsets) at the Chapel!

Obviously, the best way to recover from the turducken gorge-fest that will be taking place this Thanksgiving is by dancing your socks off to a bunch of rad bands the day after!  But where to do such a thing???  Fortunately, the Chapel has got you covered with a record release show for Polyvinyl Records‘ new garage rock compilation curated by Sonny Smith (of Sonny & The Sunsets) featuring a ton of SF bands!

Annnnd the best part is that we’re giving away a pair of FREE tickets!  For a chance to win, all you need to do is write about your funniest Thanksgiving memory in the comments.  Bonus points if you can include some San Francisco flavor in there, too!  The contest ends at 12pm noon on Thanksgiving day, so get cracking!  Be sure to include your REAL first name and REAL email when you comment so I can email you back if you win (and I know what name to put on the list)!  Don’t worry, emails will NOT be used in any other way.

Classic Bay Area punk

“This place is FUCKED!” It’s a classic Rancid lyric… Angry and joyous at the same time, aimed at the Bay Area, and fun to yell: a classic!

Anyway, you love Rancid, I love Rancid — but we’d love to know more and more and more about the time and place and scene from whence Rancid came. We’d love to dig deeper! Rancid got big fast and moved to Hollywood or something….. but what was happening here in the early days, and how’d it all go down, and what happened later on?? Maybe there was Green Day, maybe Operation Ivy had something to do with it, and maybe Chris Appelgren (of the Bold Italic) ran something called Lookout Records. In any case, we wanna know all about it!

Well, we’re in luck: DJ Trigger Cut is here to help us out. With his exhaustive knowledge of Bay Area punk rock, and his even more exhaustive record collection, DJ Trigger Cut (on the last Tuesday of every month) will educate us and excite us and make us wanna dance a drink and partY!

THIS PLACE IS FUCKED! RSVP and invite your friends! (And hope he plays some Groovie Ghoulies this time!)

Technically,

I was walking down the street yesterday, and my friend was telling me a story. As we passed a couple of guys who seemed to be cleaning out a garage, my friend was saying, “Technically–”

One of the guys whirled around and started yelling at us:

“TECHNICALLY?? FUCK TECHNICALLY!!”

“DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW TO RUB TWO STICKS TOGETHER TO MAKE A FIRE??”

“BULLSHIT! TECHNICALLY, FUCK!”

“DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW TO START A CAR??”

FUCK GOOGLE!”

We kept walking. Gotta be careful what you say out there in the Mission.

(Technically, we were on our way to a lavish brunch at Beretta, and my friend was telling me a story about how her parents are having to fight back against a proposal that would allow more public access near their secluded beach house, so.) (But there’s no way that guy could’ve known any of that!) (Fuck Google.)

Jewish vs. Goyish

I’m Jewish by birth, but I’ve never been completely sure what that means. I found this new video from our buddy Dan Wolf and the JCCSF’s 3200 Stories featuring Josh Healey to be pretty helpful and hilarious:

Happy almost Hanukkah!
