Rice Paper Scissors Grill Fest this Saturday

Summer is officially here, and you know what that means, right?  Swimming pools and BBQs!  On the latter note, those talented ladies from RPS are celebrating the arrival of the heat with their first Vietnamese BBQ/grill fest/summer time awesomeness.  It’s going down at Mission Dispatch, the new street food spot on 18th and Bryant.

Check out all the details here, and full menu after the jump.

Evil Eyes watching the Mission (and Tenderloin)

Protip to bands:  One great way to get folks around here to notice your music is to film a great video with a bunch of scenes from San Francisco and, in particular, the Mission (such as my favorite pedestrian overpass, for instance).  Bonus points if the song is actually kind of good!

On that note, enjoy some dreamy melodies from local band Evil Eyes while you enjoy the beautiful weather on your unexpected day off!

No BART across the Bay this morning

20120614-091243.jpg

Apparently the West Oakland station is closed due to a fire under the tracks and no trains are going from SF to Oakland or vice-versa. The station placards are suggesting that riders find “alternate means of transportation.”

So I guess this means that if you work in Oakland, today’s a snow day for you! Most people I spoke with in that situation are simply going back home. Vic, what are YOU gonna do?

I swear, every time I ride BART something crazy always happens. On the other hand, look at these sweet vinyl seats and non-carpet floors! At least they’ve got that going for them.

UPDATE!!! Way more coverage over at SFist.

Hopefully Dr. Rhodes is more adept at straightening backs than signage

But seriously, who actually goes to the chiropractor? Let these sham doctors crack your back once and it’ll feel good for a week, but then it’ll act up again and you’ll just have to keep going back. And back. FOREVER.

Disclaimer: I’ve never been to see a chiropractor.

Who messed up the timing of the Valencia street lights?

What was once a green wave has now become a red tide, as the excellent system in place on Valencia street that allowed cyclists and motorists alike to encounter a consecutive string of green lights so long as they maintained a steady 13 mph pace seems to have succumbed to some obstacles.  MM reader Alex reports:

It used to be that I could zip straight from 25th to 16th (heading North, that is) on my bike without having to stop a single time, because the lights were perfectly set up to be a bitchin’ bike corridor.  Now I always gotta stop around 20th and 21st.  Why?  Who killed the good light timing?

I’ve also noticed this alarming trend, not just on Valencia Street but also on 24th where the same 13 mph speed could be employed from Folsom to Valencia (and probably Guerrero) to get through every green light with plenty of time.  Now I seem to always get stuck on Capp unless I seriously gun it.

Are these changes the result of some recent decision to move away from the Green Wave initiative, or could they just some random coincidence or malfunction that upset the timing of the stoplights?  Anyone know what’s up?

Is this your bike that got stolen?

Our pal Erik just bought a bike off the street that he thinks is probably stolen, and is wondering if it may belong to you:

I just bought a bike off the street that is probably stolen, so that hopefully the real owner sees this and can claim it.

Green frame, though it may have been painted. Ritchey stem. Carbon bar ends. Plus plenty more that I won’t list here.

If this may be your bike, write to me and describe some other things about it- parts you put on, component brands, mis-matches, whatever. If you convince me that it’s yours, I’ll let you come take it back.

You may remember Erik and his fiance from the bizarre incident back when some crazy motorist hit them on Shotwell and proceeded to yell at them before speeding away.  I wonder whatever happened to that wacko?  Anyway, please spread the word and if you think this may be your bike, let Erik know on Craigslist here.

SPCA/ACC Adoptathon this Saturday!

Our pal Heather has been spending a bunch of time volunteering at the SPCA Animal Control Center, which basically entails playing with and petting a bunch of super cute cats, and she wanted to let you know about something rad going on this Saturday:

The SPCA and the Animal Control Center are having a huge pet adoption event this weekend at 15th and Harrison. It’s sponsored by this non-profit, “Maddie’s Matchmakers” so Pet adoptions are free and the organizations get much needed $$$ from each pet adopted. And lest you worry that this will attract riff-raff who don’t want to pay adoption fees, all adopters are still screened for appropriateness (like landlord permission–which we all know can be a deal-breaker).

Adoptathon!  Sooooo cute!  Check out all the details here!

St. Francis street stack shenanigans

Our pal Claire spotted this “sculpture” this morning and wants to know:

So is this street art?

While it might not quite be on par with the Thinker or David, this is pretty much as good as it gets around here.

BARTscalator

Forever broken, forever undergoing maintenance, and don’t even think of taking your bike on it!

Perhaps the BART escalators wouldn’t be in need of repair so often if they weren’t so exposed to the elements?

Copy caper

No idea what these miscreants may have been up to or if an Office Space-style beatdown was about to take place, but here’s hoping they were taking this beast to the top of a staircase so they could kick it down to make it produce some rad fucked-up Cometbus-esque Xerox copies for their zine.
