CONTEST: Hard French season finale and afterparty with Midnight Magic

Now that daylight savings is about to kick in and the sun in starting to set on our glorious Indian summer, that also means that the best daytime party in the Mission will be bidding farewell for the season, but not before one last blowout bash!  It’s all going down this Saturday, Nov 3, with festivities starting as they normally would on the El Rio patio before transitioning to Public Works at 10pm for a glorious afterparty featuring our pals Midnight Magic all the way from the clutches of Sandy in NYC.  And don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes, because these folks will MAKE YOU DANCE!

And the best part is that we’re offering two (2) free tickets to whomever can submit the best photo or story in the comments that embodies just how rad Hard French really is.  Or just post your rad Halloween costumes!  The contest ends promptly at 6pm on Thursday (tomorrow), so you better get cracking!  Also, don’t forget to check out all the details as well as RSVP and invite your friends here.

Oh, and did I mention that these folks will make you dance:

Ty Segall to headline the Fillmore in 2013

How bout this? We’ve seen local boy Ty Segall (pictured) perform at the Eagle, the Knockout, El Rio, Thee Parkside, 12 Galaxies, the steps of City Hall, the Great American Music Hall, Brick & Mortar Music Hall, and Treasure Island — and now he’s apparently going to headline the Fillmore, the biggest venue in the entire universe. Good work, Ty!

Tickets go on sale this Sunday right here.

Smithsfits Halloween this Saturday

I guess that since Halloween falls on a Wednesday this year, most people seem to be doing their thing tomorrow rather than on the actual day.  While the acceptance of this may be debatable to hardcore Halloween purists, most of us simply benefit from having two Halloween opportunities to get weird!  And if you need ideas on how to get it started Saturday, embrace the darkness with Smithsfits at the Knockout–there’ll be a costume contest with a $100 prize, and special guest Gary War opens at 10pm!

Check out all the details, plus RSVP and invite your friend here!

New song from Girls’ Christopher Owens

Not sure if Girls ex-frontman has forgotten about us already, but we still give him a lot of credit for making the best music to come out of San Francisco in years, as well as generally keeping it real when it comes to SF. Any fears that breaking up the band would knock him off the course he’s been pursuing over the last 2.5 albums were unfounded, as this morning he released the intro and first track of his new album, out in January. In classic Owens style, he chronicles a cross-country tour to New York City, and even gets a little sexy at the end, with the following great lyric: “Hair on my head / tongue in my mouth / I’ve got it all figured out. / Open up your heart tonight, New York City. / Tongue in my ear / hair in my mouth / I want you to figure me out. / Open up your arms tonight…”

Love that guy.

Matty Luv lives

It’s been 10 years and a couple weeks since Mission punk hero and Hickey frontman Matty Luv passed away.

Celebrate by writing more graffiti, or by getting the recently issued Hickey retrospective compilation, or by reading about how Hickey raged against the commercialization of punk (and the Voodoo Glow Skulls).

Battlehooch’s October residency at the Knockout

Continues tonight with opener Windham Flat (who we took a look at a few months back but still haven’t seen live).

Battlehooch loves to get crazy, and there’s nothing crazier than a monthlong residency, so everything on the above announcement is bound to be funnn.
