CONTEST: Win tickets to a ping pong party and a punk show at El Rio this Saturday!

Two big-ticket parties at El Rio on one big-ticket date!

First there’s the triumphant return of American Tripps to the Mission, which we mentioned yesterday. And then stick around as the sun starts to set for a thrilling night of distortion-drenched punk rock courtesy of AlaricCrimson Scarlet, and my band La Corde!  This is going to be our only show of the summer, so don’t say I didn’t warn you when you’re suffering from withdrawal sometime in September.  Also, it’s going to be Alaric’s last show for a looooooong time, as they are taking a break to write and record a new record.  Oh, and DJ Brown Amy from Hard French will be spinning records in between sets! Check out the details and tell your friends about it here.

Oh, and I almost forgot about the best part: We’re offering 2 FREE tickets to BOTH events for whoever can come up with the best story in the comments about the craziest punk rock show they ever attended, whether it happened at 924 Gilman, ABC No Rio, or even your mom’s basement. The contest ends at noon on Friday, and winners will be judged on merit.

See you there!

Treasure Island Music Festival 2012 starring Girl Talk, Public Enemy, the XX, M83 and more, on sale tomorrow

I saw Girl Talk and the Presets play the same bill about 6 or 7 years ago at some weird dance music festival at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, and it was awesome. This is going to be a blast. Treasure Island is consistently my favorite local festival (what with its epic views and chill vibe and great lineups that don’t overlap so you don’t miss anything), so, as I tell everyone I know every year, you should check it out, possibly even if you don’t like festivals at all.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10AM right here.

P.S. Public Enemy???

Mission Baroque, SF’s newest early music ensemble, tugging your heartstrings

From the official invite to last night’s performance:

Mission Baroque, San Francisco’s newest early music ensemble, will be providing a program of seventeenth century vocal gems that tug at the heartstrings.

And they did! This one’s called “Dido’s Lament”:

Mission Baroque rules!

Windy day in the Mission makes for epic dubstep video

Local filmmaker Kate Imbach harnessed the power of nature (and some video editing capabilities) and made some magic:

Dang, it’s even better than that M. Night Shyamalan movie I loved so much!

The Story of DESCENDENTS/ALL

Perhaps you’ve heard of DESCENDENTS, who are only one of the most influential punk rock bands ever.  Apparently, they’re also one of the most under-documented bands around, and two filmakers aimed to change that 2 years ago with a feature-length documentary!  40 interviews later, they’re almost ready to release FILMAGE: The Story of DESCENDENTS/ALL.

Check out the trailer above to get a taste for what’s in store, and stay posted on any updates to this rad project here.

CONTEST: Win tickets to the Crystal Ark, Horse Meat Disco, Poolside and Honey Soundsystem at Mezzanine!

Just look at this band. This is the Crystal Ark. Not only do they look like this, but also at least two of the people in this picture were also in our dearly departed LCD Soundsystem. Omg, right? You will want to attend this show (which takes place this Friday night).

To win tickets, tell us your best crystal-related or horse-meat-related story in the comments section below. A winner will be chosen based on merit and awarded a pair of tickets. Contest ends at noon on Wednesday.

Thanks to local crew Honey Soundsystem for making this contest possible.

Evil Eyes watching the Mission (and Tenderloin)

Protip to bands:  One great way to get folks around here to notice your music is to film a great video with a bunch of scenes from San Francisco and, in particular, the Mission (such as my favorite pedestrian overpass, for instance).  Bonus points if the song is actually kind of good!

On that note, enjoy some dreamy melodies from local band Evil Eyes while you enjoy the beautiful weather on your unexpected day off!
