Independence Day in San Francisco Is Rad

So proves this joy-saturated love letter of a music video by filmmaker Daniel Jarvis and Sierra Frost of local band The Downer Party. It contains the above two images, and LOTS MORE. Says Jarvis:

Shot on the Canon HV-30 aka “The Cowboy Cam” at Mission Dolores Park, 24th and Harrison, The Uptown, The Phone booth, Bernal Heights (courtesy of Loren Risker) and all over the roads of San Francisco!

Here it is:

(By the way, isn’t that band name kind of a redundant play on words, seeing as how the Donner Party were a pack of total downers anyway?)

Jackie Jones Rocks!

And if you like that, head over to SF Guitarworks for photos of Jackie and her handmade ELECTRIC WASHBOARD GUITAR.

(Thanks, Cristina!)

Creeping the Sheep

Someone brought this sheep (singular) to Dolores Park. It was only 2 months old, so I’m pretty sure he’s going to have his hands full in a year or so when this thing is full grown, knocking down doors and butting his head into parked cars all over the place.

He was really soft, for the record.

California Honeydrops On Chasing The Moon

The California Honeydrops are the latest band to be featured on Chasing the Moon and it’s my favorite installment yet. If you haven’t had a chance to see them yet, it should give you a good idea of what you’re missing. Good thing I wasn’t at this filming, because I probably would have knocked over a boom mic dancing.

From Scott McDowell:

This band is world class fresh! The California Honeydrops are the real deal: transforming any dull scene into a world class dance party. Lech Wierzynski leads killer a band that includes pianist Chris Burns, drummer Ben Malament, bass player Seth Ford-Young, and saxophonist Johnny Bones. Working on this episode was especially tough because none of us could stay seated during the editing/mixing.

I love that second tune. If you told me it was a lost Sam Cooke side I would have thought twice about it.

Dave Eggers On Zeitoun

Wesam Nassar, my pal and producing partner, put together a short interview with Dave Eggers about Abdulrahman Zeitoun and his family, the subject of his most recent book.

It is an excellent book, by the way. On the one hand Eggers tells the amazing true story of a man choosing to stay in New Orleans during Katrina. On the other hand he illustrates the experience of being an immigrant Syrian Muslim in Bush’s US. And though those both seem like themes that would dominate any story, in the end what I was most left with is the strength of the Zetioun family (here and around the world), and their determination to hold together through anything, without compromising their values or beliefs.

(Sorry, was that too serious for MM? I’ll post some more pictures of garbage on the sidewalk soon enough)

Breaking: Manglomerate EDW Lynch Leaving the SF Romantic Market

Breaking news from EDW Lynch himself:

Dear Sir:

Because you serve the vital purpose of informing the Mission public about important matters, we would be remiss if we failed to inform you that EDW Lynch is leaving the San Francisco Romantic Market effective 8:00pm yesterday. Sorry ladies.

EDW Lynch is a Mission-based man-corporate hybrid (corporate manglomerate) that has begun holding press conferences at the Amnesia Open Mic on Tuesdays.

This is hot on the heels of the LJBF (Let’s Just Be Friends) incident several weeks ago:

No word on what happened to his previous English accent.

'Whoever Stole The Goddamned Microphone, Shame On Yo' Ass'

This was the unfortunate scene at Nap’s III last Friday night. They eventually moved on, but it turned out some drunk chick ran off with the mic to the back patio and returned it just in time for her song. I guess she didn’t like duets.

When I raise enough money to start the next franchise (Nap’s IV) I’ll probably stick to non-wireless microphones.

Frown Town: Made of Mission

Steve and Andy send us word of their upcoming internet series Frown Town:

For over a year now we’ve been hard at work on a intricately crafted magical internet puppet show about wayward kids kicking it in a vacant lot.  It’s got spiteful stillborns, pyromaniacal gingers, spastic sugar addicts and we made it right here in the Mission.  In our garage, as a mater of fact.  After a year of work the scripts are writ, the puppets are stitched, and the sets are coming up, but we’re a high def video camera away from being able to set the show in motion.

Their last blog post details how all the materials and inspirations for their puppets come from the Mission, from scrounging foam from the discarded furniture lining our streets, accessorizing at One $ Store, and swiping the latest fashions from folks in Dolores Park. The puppets look great so far!

They are still getting off the ground, so if you want to help out in a way other than leaving your scabies-infested couch on the street, you can donate at their kickstarter page.

'Dude, crazy dancing chicks on a rooftop! Bring your camera!'
