Woody Allen filming today in the former Force of Habit Records at 20th and Lexington

But it appears they haven’t altered the facade or signage. (Maybe they’re making the Braindead Dave Story.) Anybody get a look at the interior?

Hungry Combat Unit patrolling the Mission

Our pal Doctor Popular was on the scene:

Spotted this shopping-cart-turned-tank on 16th Street yesterday and poked around the nearby restaurants until I found it’s creator. In my terrible attempt at speaking Spanish, I told him I loved his art and asked to take his picture. Although he looks a little scary holding his cardboard machine gun like a Sweded version of Rambo, he was a really happy go lucky guy.

Sweded Rambo! Good call, Doc! (Also, what a pic!) Read on for more pics and info.

Woody Allen filming in the Mission today

Reader Jennifer W. shares the news:

Thought your readers might be interested that the new Woody Allen movie is filming at the New Central Cafe (on S. Van Ness @ 14th) today. I live 1 block over on Shotwell and there’s no parking all up one side of the block so production trailers can come in. The production company listed on the flyered notice is “Perdido Productions,” which according to IMDb is working on “Untitled Woody Allen Project” known to be shooting in SF this month. Cate Blanchett might be in a trailer across the street from me right now!

Wow!

UPDATE: SFist has some video of the scene.

Brand-new Rhea’s Deli coming soon to 20th and Bryant!

Over the weekend, neighbors received Notice of Building Permit Application packets detailing a planned second Rhea’s Deli location on the southwest corner of 20th and Bryant in the space formerly occupied by Deli-Up Cafe. This is huge. (I liked Deli-Up because it was a rare deli that offered crinkle-cut french fries as a side dish, but c’mon — ANOTHER RHEA’S!)

Unlike the original Rhea’s, as you can see, this one’s gonna have a ton of seating, so presumably the vibe will be much more eatery and much less corner store. A welcome addition to this corner of the neighborhood! (And the documents below state that the business name will be Rhea’s Cafe, which would make the distinction even clearer.)

UPDATE: Mike Chino brings up an excellent point:

Mike:  holy cow new rheas is exciting
me:  yupppppp
Mike:  i bet this means they’ll be bringing back the katsu
me:  YUSSSSSSSS
Mike:  james said they had to stop making it due to permitting/zoning something something

I guess they weren’t allowed a fryer? Hopefully this place will have a fryer! (Shit, maybe they’ll even bring back crinkle-cut fries!)

More pics and details after the jump. (Thanks, David!) (more…)

Primopalooza

As you might know if you’ve paid attention to this blog ever, Primo is basically our favorite DJ, and over the next 48 hours or so you’ve got three opportunities to see him do his thing (and he’s very versatile, so his “thing” will vary wildly at each event).

The first is all soul, the last is all house — and the middle one is a little bit of both and a lot of everything in between. Click any of the posters to head to the Facebook invites for further info:

Sriracha water bottles

Hot!

Gage and Desoto, the makers of the beauties, are all sold out right now, but it looks like they’ll be restocked in early September. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Tribute to all your favorite old canned beers

I say “old” because at this point you’d probably want to add Hell or High Watermelon and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale to the list, right?

Mexican Tony, from one of the Tip Top Inn pool teams in the early ’80s

About 3 years back we received a request from a reader:

Been scouring the web for a picture of the old sign for the Tip Top Inn. Gonna have it painted for my man friend for our anniversary. That’s where we first laid beer goggles on one another. Can’t find a picture of it anywhere and somebody made off with the sign. Do you think the Mission Mission readers might be able to help?

So we wrote up a post and wouldn’t you know it, Burrito Justice (doy) came through. Here’s what the ol’ Tip Top Inn sign looked like:

The other day, that 3-year-old post received a new comment. I nearly deleted it without looking because comments on posts that old are usually spam — but luckily I didn’t:

They called me Mexican Tony. I used to wear a Silver Navajo Bracelet. I was on one of pool teams at The Tip Top Inn back in the early 1980′s. I remember Mark, Hell of a Pool player. Judy Nelson, was one of my good friends. I used to get free S F Giants baseball tickets from Fred Breining an Ed Whitson when they played for S F. A good few of the Giants used to visit the bar. I remember Vida Blue hanging out at the bar some nights. Vida would see me in the bar and he’d holler “BIG T, Wow! Ron Sanso, Mr. B, Jess the barber, George, Tom, Barbara, David Caverly RIP My Buddy. If you remember me or just want to chat about the Tip Top, leave a comment. Believe me, I’ll check the website for new comments. Thanks Mexican Tony

Whoa. Thanks for getting in touch, Mexican Tony!

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
