CONTEST: Win tickets to the Last Days of Discolandia, a hot sweaty dance party in the Bayview

When news broke that Discolandia was to be replaced by a gourmet sausage and pie shop, some neighbors began to worry about the fate of the Discolandia signage, and the classic storefront as a whole. Our pal Linda was one of those neighbors, and she led the fight to preserve these things, in part by offering to host a party called “The Last Days of Discolandia” to raise money to preserve the signage. Here’s what went down:

I hashed it out with the Pig and Pie dude to keep the Discolandia record sign and he’s gonna refurbish and keep the actual Discolandia sign inside as part of the decor. Fair enough. He didn’t want any money raised for any of that but I had fixated on the name Last Days of Discolandia so the party had to happen either way. Proceeds go to the Cyclecide Swearhouse.

Fair enough. The party is this Saturday. Here are all the details:

Last Days of Discolandia
presents
A Soul, Rhythm & Roots Dance Party
Featuring
DJ Harry Duncan
In the Soul Kitchen/KUSF in Exile
Saturday, January 14
$10, doors a 9pm, dancing till 2am
1660 Jerrold Ave. @ 3rd at the Cyclecide Swearhouse

KUSF’s Harry Duncan, a.k.a. Harry D, has been holding down ‘In the Soul Kitchen’ on Tuesday nights from 7 to 9pm for the past 28 years. Who knows how many babies have been conceived on his musical watch. This self-proclaimed ‘”Man Behind The Mike With The Strong Stuff You Like” is the former manager/performer of the Meters, Ornette Coleman, Boz Scaggs, Irma Thomas, and Captain Beefheart, among others … and his record collection is vast as his segues are smooth. To listeners, simply put, Harry D’s KUSF show has become synonymous with “Take me to funk and soul school once a week.”

Duncan’s late friend, legendary music producer Bill Graham, would, no doubt, be pleased to see DJ Harry Duncan stepping out from behind the mike to spin live at his monthly Roots and Rhythm Series at Amoeba Music SF plus spinning on shows with artists such as The Original Meters, The Roots, Femi Kuti, Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, Tower of Power, Rebirth Brass Band, Warren Haynes’ Tribute to Sly Stone, Soulive, Tinariwen, Boz Scaggs and Los Lobos.

Look out Omer, Valencia Street may have a new bard

Mid West Coast says this guy specializes in ’90s covers. And who doesn’t love ’90s covers? (Plus, I don’t think Omer even remembers the ’90s.)

Truly evil bike thief leaves five-fingered shoes behind as calling card

As though stealing your bike weren’t enough, this thief leaves behind a five-fingered shoe as an extra little fuck-you to his victims. Truly evil. This Craigslist post explains:

STOLEN: Giant OCR1 (black) (mission district)

some @!#$ stole my bike from INSIDE our house in the common area between 6:45pm and 7:00pm. Whoever stole the bike propped the back door open with five fingered shoes. I HATE FIVE FINGERED SHOES.

It is a Giant OCR1 in black. The front tire has radial spokes and it looks very similar to the attached photo (right down to the saddlebag). I think the only visible difference between this photo and my bike is the spokes on the wheels.

Ugh, that photo makes me sad. I miss my bike already.

Bike was stolen near the corner of Valencia and Liberty.

If you see this bike please please please please please say something. I will love you long-time.

Keep your eyes peeled. Here’s hoping this heinous criminal gets pinched.

Old lady just wants you to throw all her garbage in the street

Last week we met this old lady that leans out her window and demands that passersby remove takeout menus from her railing and chuck them in the street. Yesterday, our pal C’mon Pony happened past this same woman’s house, and the woman had a whole new demand:

This lady evidently does not like newspapers on her driveway either, as she leaned out her window (“Excuse me! Excuuse me!”) and asked me to throw it into the street this afternoon.

Sometimes it’s nice to take a step back and put it all into perspective.

Uranus ain’t cheap, but it does the trick in the wee hours

Stellar speller slice joint Galaxcy Pizza has begun its intergalaxctic takeover of the Mission, with their recent doorknob menu campaign leaving very few streets untouched. While no one is sure if the extra “c” is intentional, Galaxcy promises pies from our solar center to Uranus and beyond.

A quick glance at the menu and it is evident that ingredients and planets rarely align. The Neptune sort of makes sense, as he was the god of the sea (“anchovies, shrimps, green onions and fresh garlic”) but Mercury (“pesto sauce, spinach, green onions, and feta cheese (no red sauce)”) is a bit greener than one would think. Uranus is hodgepodge of uncomplimentary ingredients (“BBQ sauce, grilled chicken, bacon, and red onions”) and is tied for most expensive pie. Whether or not any planets make the cut for most heinous slice is up for debate.

Can two BART acrobats find love?

Here’s the Missed Connection:

My Fellow BART Acrobat – m4w – 30 (financial district)

Last Saturday night: You showed us all how to do it! We started an epidemic. You seem like a stand up(side down) kind of girl. Let’s hang out!

Oh, I was the one who hi-fived you.

Here’s hoping!

(Thanks, Nattles!)

BART gymnastics!

It was like the 1996 Summer Olympics all over again, minus leotards, plus anonymous challengers, and all in an arena traveling up to 80 miles per hour. Thank you, BART gymnasts, for the best BART ride ever!
