A view of Bernal Isle from high above Mission Gulf

Thanks to “global warming,” the Mission will one day be fully submerged in the bay, so we’ll need to head south if we want dry land. Today, Bernalwood published an in-depth look at this startling vision of the future:

It may take centuries for Bernal to attain its island destiny. Yet whenever that future arrives, we, the residents of Bernal Heights, should ourselves be the architects and designers of our shared destiny. Which is why — aided by detailed maps of Bernal Isle created by La Lengua rebel leader Burrito Justice — Bernalwood has created some conceptual mockups to demonstrate how we might leverage Bernal’s prime beachfront location overlooking Mission Gulf… for the benefit of posterity.

Another take on hating San Francisco

I don’t know if I’ve ever been so offended while laughing out loud at the same time in all my life. Something tells me that if our good buddy Peter Shih took this tongue-in-cheek approach instead of dissing homeless people and “49ers,” he might still be able to live in this city without getting spit on everywhere he goes.

Check out the whole video for a surprise visit by the Tamale Lady (not the mural version), as well as some poignant commentary on gentrification, starring everyone’s favorite albino alligator.

Fight for Brick & Mortar’s right to party tonight at City Hall

The folks who run Brick & Mortar Music Hall will be appearing before the San Francisco Entertainment Commission tonight at 5:30 p.m. to make a case for lifting the volume restrictions and curfews that employees say have been hurting business since the city imposed them in May.

Said restrictions were in response to noise complaints from neighbors; Brick & Mortar has since installed over $50,000 worth of soundproofing, met repeatedly with those who filed complaints and passed sound tests from the Department of Public Health, says the owner. Now they just want to get back to serving late-night rock ‘n’ roll (at appropriate volumes) in addition to daytime bacon.

If you wanna go: SF City Hall, hearing room 416.

Ty Segall’s favorite taco, and why tacos are better than burritos

The A.V. Club today devotes a LOT of words to formerly local hero Ty Segall’s love of tacos:

The A.V. Club: Why do you love tacos?

Ty Segall: Growing up in Southern California and moving to Northern California, tacos are a part of the culture. Also, I don’t know why, but it’s always been more of an excuse for me to spend time with people eating a taco, especially in San Francisco. There was this one place, El Castillito, that we’d always go, and me and my buddy John [Dwyer] from Thee Oh Sees would always meet there twice a week and get a taco. It’s a pretty rad excuse to just sit and eat and talk. I don’t really have any other foods or places in my life that are excuses to hang out with people.

Read on to hear Ty name his favorite taqueria in all the land (which is in SF) and to hear why tacos are better than burritos (something about warmth and love).

(Thanks, Linds!)

Five years of Four Barrel means free coffee all day today!

Has it really been that long already?  Besides the free coffee, they’ve also enlisted the help of some  friends from last year:

  • Glass Coat Photo Booth will be setting up one of their beautiful, free photo booths from 12pm-4pm.
  • Also, there will be two Skee Ball units in the back for people to square off against one another, courtesy of local Skee Ball champ, Joey the Cat.
  • At noon, we will be serving free slices of delicious Tartine cake, while the three cakes last of course, which is usually, like, five minutes.
  • For the kids, we’ll have a small petting zoo set up from noon to 3pm in one of our parklet corrals, courtesy of Little Explorers Mobile Petting Zoo.
  • For the lunchtime crowd, Los Compadres, a delicious taco truck, will be posted up outside if people want some food to go along with their lattes.  It’ll be a hoot.

If anyone can beat my score of 450 in Skee Ball, I’ll buy you a puppy.
