Fortune Cookie Fortunes

As you must know by now, Mission Street Food is going to be moving its operation indoors, starting this coming Thursday. Johnny0 has the full story and a nice big graphic over at Burrito Justice.

Among other things, it’s been announced that something called a “fortune” “cookie” will be this week’s dessert item, and right now over at Plebiscite, home of an unnamed MSF insider, they’re soliciting ideas for fortune cookie fortunes. Hit ‘em with your best shot. Link.

A Day Without A Mexican

no one in particular says:

The Day of the Dead parade was ironically the only time I’ve been on 24th Street and not seen a single Mexican.

American Apparel Comes to the Mission

Reader Chris spotted this item on SFist’s anonymous tip page: After this election thing is done, American Apparel will take over the space currently occupied by the Sanchez campaign. Chris says, “Not sure how I feel about it personally. It’s definitely not the type of development the mission needs.” Why not? You got a problem with my extra-short American Apparel gym shorts?

Update: Elly says:

I asked some mark sanchez reps about this when they doorknocked me yesterday and they told me that AA has actually had the lease on that space for years and not been able to move in because the zoning on valencia doesn’t allow franchises. they seemed to think that AA will never be able to open up there due to that, and pointed out how irritating it is that they’ve been paying like 8k a month to hold the space and keep it from other local businesses that the neighbs might actually want.

Fight Club

Remember, the first rule of Fight Club is don’t print a bunch of beautiful posters announcing Fight Club’s date and location and illegality because then bloggers will post the image and some citizen will call the fuzz and Fight Club will have to clandestinely relocate to another hill. Anyway, Fight Club was pretty fun despite all that. This guy was the star of the show. While most rode the brake quite a bit, this fearless hero never touched it, repeatedly flying down the raceway at top speed, “sharpest turns in the city” and all. For his second and third runs, he donned a helmet, thank goodness.

Cold Show

bougainvillea says:

Just before 10pm Sunday night, I heard more than the usual number of sirens and looked out the window to see ten police cars pulling up on Cesar Chavez at Valencia.  They stopped what looked like a grey SUV and arrested the five guys who were traveling in it.  It was quite a dramatic scene.  The cops had guns drawn, and they had the passengers get out of the car one at a time and walk backwards towards the cops with their hands in the air.  Then they brought someone by for a “cold show,” which meant that a witness was sitting in a car across the street trying to ID the suspects.  The whole thing took almost an hour. Does anyone know what this was about?

Sucks.

Not sure where Janet starts and Sabrina ends, but, shit. Can anybody confirm? Is there a plan to resist? Should I bring my Kevlar? Link.

Update: Todd assures us: “Totally NOT CANCELLED.”

Virginia the Undead Tamale Lady

Jesse from Beer & Nosh happened upon this grisly scene last night: Virginia the Zombie Tamale Lady hauling a cooler full of tamales with fillings such as bugs, eyeballs and what Jesse terms “miscellaneous hipster pieces.” Looks enticing! Thanks, Jesse! Link.

Lisa Hanawalt at the Alternative Press Expo

Last week I said my new favorite zine is Stay Away From Other People by Lisa Hanawalt, and it turns out she’s helping man the Buenaventura Press booth at APE all weekend. She’ll have prints like this one for sale, as well as some original art. Link.

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
