MM at SXSW: Waffle tacos (by which I mean WAFFLE TACOS)

It’s a taco, made of a waffle, filled with home fries, grilled onions and cheddar, and topped with Louisiana hot sauce — and maple syrup. (Or maybe they call it “sizzurp” in Texas, I forget.)

A joy to consume.

You can also get them with fried chicken and bacon. Here’s the spot, Lucky J’s:

Free donuts and beer at Dynamo this afternoon!

That’s right kids, free donuts and beer at Dynamo from 4-6pm, courtesy of Project Open Hand.  Not only will eating donuts and swilling beer benefit a good cause, you’ll also have the chance to name their newest donut creation (I’m going with Peanutty Honeybear FTW).  There is no downside here, except for a case of the sugar highs.

By the way, is there a correct way to spell donut?  I’ve also seen it spelled doughnut, and I’m not sure which is correct, because neither looks particularly right – someone want to help me out here?

[Thanks Brittany!]

MM at SXSW: Pearl not Pabst

Yeah, the beer here is different.

MM at SXSW: Pineapple tuna melt

It was amazing. The pineapple was chopped up and added right into the tuna salad. Why have I never heard of this before??

I got it at this place, next to the Pitchfork party:

Bender’s bloody Sunday

We’ve been on a quest to find the best bloody mary in the city for quite some time now.  There are plenty of contenders, with Zeitgeist, thee Parkside, and the Phonebooth coming to mind immediately.  Well, now it looks like we’ll need to make a new addition to the list, because the Bender’s bloody mary is a monster.

Spicy, sharp, and zesty, the Bender’s bloody may seem a bit pricey at $8 a pop, but it’s basically brunch in a cup.  For meat eaters, it even comes with a bonus Slim Jim in addition to the usual pickled green beans and olives!  Truly the perfect way to start a relaxing weekend.

Who makes your favorite bloody marys?

Boogaloos does guerrilla dining, soul night

I’ve never had the patience to stand in line on a Saturday morning at Boogaloos, but I’ve always heard good things, and it makes me regret my inability to stand in one place for more than 10 minutes.  So now it looks like I have an actual “you mean I don’t have to wait for 45 minutes?!” reason to check out this spot – graffEATS Guerrilla Dinning has moved on from The Corner and will set up shop for 4 nights only, starting tonight.  Check it:

The menu will be similar at all three dinners, with a few changes. We’re sticking to the soulful food and soulful beats theme, but with more soul this time, of course. My buddy, Jesse Durocher, from the “the Laundry” and Campton Place will be back with me in the kitchen again.

We will be taking walk-ins, but why not seal the deal with a reservation. Reservations can be made by simply emailing us.

Limited time only, so get on it.

Boogaloos: new menu means new prices

Lets all pretend we’re Irish so we can party

Despite how brown it is now, we all know the Mission used to be Irish, so it’s only fitting that you go out tonight and drink some whiskey  – or green something — in honor of our neighborhood heritage (because you never drink whiskey — or green something — otherwise, right?).

Here are some places you can find said whiskey on the cheap, as well as some themed specials and maybe some good ole fashioned hooliganry:

Shotwells – serving corned beef sandwiches and no green beer.

The Phoenix - the self proclaimed “hippest Irish bar in the Mission” has  Smithwicks, Harp and Guinness on tap, and will probably have some appetizer specials.  drink up.

Another Monkey – Cheap drink specials including $4 Jameson shots.  Whiskey at a Thai place?  It’s true, and there is lots of it.

My  advice?  Follow the people wearing green and falling over at around 7pm to find the best specials in the neighborhood.  They usually know whats up.

Stay hydrated out there, and call a cab to get home (cause they’re free tonight!).  Erin Go Bragh, bro.

Irish Car Bomb cupcake probably the best holiday-themed cupcake there is

Yessir, this is one excellent and festive idea. Brown Eyed Baker has the recipe here.

If I saw one of these on the ground late at night, I would definitely, definitely consider it.

(Thanks, Tiffany!)

Skateboard streetfood

We tried to use all the CSI imagery equipment we have back at the Mission Mission labs to sharpen this photo up a bit and elucidate as many details as possible, but perhaps you can still make out a crock pot on top of some sort of heating apparatus, both of which are being pushed along on a skateboard.  Mission ingenuity wins again!

Of course, it’s times like these when you really curse those textured yellow anti-skateboard strips at every intersection sidewalk ramp . . .
