Piratical Restauranteering

Wow, look at that soup. I can’t believe I biked right past and didn’t go in. Fortunately, Jesse went in and took lots of great pictures. Full report here. I’m glad Elizabeth’s fortune cookie fortunes made the grade, and I fully support the Jew-food idea.

Johnny0 was there too, and he also paid a visit to the operation’s former corner afterward. Link.

New Neighborhood Butcher

Jesse at Beer & Nosh just put up a profile of Alhambra Halal Meat Co., a new butcher shop on 24th Street. Jesse marvels at Alhambra’s spotlessness and fastidiousness, meets the staff, shoots an array of gorgeous photos, and leaves with a choice lamb neck. (Details on the braising of the neck are here.)

Fortune Cookie Fortunes

As you must know by now, Mission Street Food is going to be moving its operation indoors, starting this coming Thursday. Johnny0 has the full story and a nice big graphic over at Burrito Justice.

Among other things, it’s been announced that something called a “fortune” “cookie” will be this week’s dessert item, and right now over at Plebiscite, home of an unnamed MSF insider, they’re soliciting ideas for fortune cookie fortunes. Hit ‘em with your best shot. Link.

Virginia the Undead Tamale Lady

Jesse from Beer & Nosh happened upon this grisly scene last night: Virginia the Zombie Tamale Lady hauling a cooler full of tamales with fillings such as bugs, eyeballs and what Jesse terms “miscellaneous hipster pieces.” Looks enticing! Thanks, Jesse! Link.

Change Afoot Already: Mission Street Food Moves Indoors

This week, Mission Street Food enters a cocoon for a period of hibernation. Next week, it will emerge as a beautiful new butterfly. According to the official blog:

We’re announcing a new format for Mission Street Food: each week, we’ll feature a local guest chef/cook, who will offer his or her own dishes in addition to our regular menu.

To make this change possible, we’ll be moving from the truck into an actual restaurant. We’ve been talking with some local restaurants about sharing space, and we’ll announce the details in a few days. We’ll be closed this week for planning and will re-open somewhere in the Mission on November 6.

Link. This sounds great, but will the sandwiches be as fun to eat sitting at a table, indoors? Will it still be street food?

Hater Tries to Spoil Mission Street Food Fun

Last night, we got to Mission Street Food at 7:55 and the line was already half a block long. In addition to this, some maniac was causing a commotion up front shouting something about permitting. We were very hungry, so we went to La Taqueria instead. Undaunted, Burrito Justice stuck it out and got the full story, and some interesting photos (like the one above). Also, bacon. Link.

Sasquatch Squash

Fall is in the air, and Tree over at Free Farm Stand has proof, one of the largest banana squashes this side of Thanksgiving!  No mere knife could tame this unruly beast, it requires a “sawzall.” Sounds like Tree is going to have a lot of squash in the coming weeks.

Just like Tom said (the guy who brought the tomatoes and squash to me from the country), I cut the squash easily with a “sawzall”, and I wrapped 1 lb. pieces in cling plastic wrap. I still have more to cut up and he wants to bring me more.
