Undercover Project Tackles the Pixies “Doolittle” Next Tuesday at Public Works

A ton of bay area musicians are reinterpreting the Pixies album “Doolittle” next Tuesday at Public Works. Bands include afrobeat ensemble Albino!, Tuvan throat-singing bluesman  Seth Augustus, and ex-Dance Hall Crasher Karina Denike.

Come witness over 100 Bay Area musicians from more than 15 ensembles as they reinterpret this beloved classic album.

One group per song. Each of the 15 songs completely rearranged to reflect the sound of that band.

Date: 2/22 Doors: 6:30 PM Show: 7:30 PM SHARP!!!

We highly encourage all attendees to purchase tickets in advance here:
http://monkey.eventbrite.com/

Cover: $18 for advance purchases, $20 at the door (as available)

Check out the facebook event for more details on the lineup. Based on the musicians attending alone, it’s gonna be packed. Get there early.

If you don’t remember, the last show these folks put together was a remake of Nico by the Velvet Underground. Check out this recording from the show: the California Honeydrops playing a beautiful gospel inspired “Run Run Run”.

Update: I goofed, it’s next Tuesday.

CONTEST: Win VIP Tickets to Mark Growden Release Show at the Brava Theater This Weekend!

We’ll pick a winner, based on merit, on Wednesday at 5pm.

Water Main Caps Go ‘Plink-Plink’

Don’t you love when one of these boys gets loose and goes “plink-plink” or “plonk-plonk” when cars or bikes roll over it? Sometimes at rush hour you can get some serious rhythms going.

CONTEST: Win Tickets to Kid Koala at Noise Pop 2011

Kid Koala rules, dude. And as part of Noise Pop 2011 he’s playing Mighty on the 25th. You can get tickets here, OR win a pair by leaving a comment below explaining why you deserve them more than anybody else. We’ll pick a winner after 5pm Monday.

(By the way, Kid K. is also appearing on the 26th at this thing called the Noise Pop Culture Club where rock stars host workshops and stuff. We’ll be giving away tickets to that some time in the next couple weeks, so keep reading closely.)

Thee Oh Sees Rule

But I missed the Nobunny/Dreamdate show. Was it epic? Should I cruise up to Sacramento tonight and catch it at the Hub?

La Corde at the Knockout Tonight!

In case you were wondering about what all those crows have been doing in the Mission lately, it’s obvious from this flyer that they’re raging about the Alcoholocaust show at the Knockout tonight.  If you’re not doing anything on this fine Tuesday evening, check out my band La Corde at one of your favorite Mission bars/venues.  We’re playing last after two-piece punk brigade Culture Corpse and Oakland stalwarts High Castle, so come on down and check out some local tunes (but please leave the Marina party bus at home).

Amiable DJ Shutdown

We witnessed most of the most pleasant DJ-police interactions we’ve ever seen in Dolores Park over the weekend.  Look at those wide smiles on the faces of everyone involved!  The whole scene lasted less than a minute, with the officer walking up and having a word followed by the DJs immediately complying.

Everyone must have been pretty techno’d out because catcalls of “Fuck the Police” were muted and sparse.  Or maybe it was just because the sun was going down (albeit epically).

Cool New Band Out of Chico

They’re called Ankhs. Music fan David Enos is thinking about checking them out:

Cool new band out of Chico, “Ankhs”.  Gonna be rocking at the Stork Club on Telegraph on a West Coast tour in a couple weeks, supporting Cumulus Zen and Rainy Day Woman (acoustic).  Thinking about checking em out.  Free barbeque in the back, 4:30 pm.

Not convinced? Check out this little documentary film:

‘It’s Sunny in the Mission’ Says Possible Mission Anthem

Our pal Christina recommends a song:

I wanted to share this song which I think could kind of be a Mission anthem, my friends wrote it so I may be a little biased, but doesn’t it just want to make you go lay out in the sun in Dolores Park? Feel free to share with MissionMission fans. The band is called The Cannery and they’re local.

Listen to the song in question here. Might be a little mellow to be the sound of the Mission, but it’s good.

Thanks, Christina!
