Pierogi, borscht, blintzes and more at pop-up dinner tonight at La Victoria

It’s called Old World, and it sounds pretty good:

Hey friends and anyone interested in some great east European and Jewish soul food! We’ve got an awesome menu for this Wednesday packed full of can’t miss items: three pierogies; chicken soup with liver dumpling; our transcendant borscht and more.

View the  full menu, RSVP and invite your friends here!

Nicegeist: Brand-new Biergarten in Hayes Valley is kind of like Zeitgeist but a little more nice

They have authentic German-style picnic tables instead of big dumb American picnic tables, which is nice. The bathrooms are really nice, which is nice. Beer comes in big ol’ steins (or little steins if you’re a pussy), which is nice. The horseradish is some of the best we’ve ever had, which is nice.

It’s nice during the day, and it’s nice after dark:

Overall it’s pretty nice.

Just a couple of problems:

  1. Discrimination. On the way out, the gatekeeper offered to remove our wristbands. I was in a hurry so I said no thanks, and then he shouted after me, “Just don’t throw ‘em on the ground around here. You can throw ‘em on the ground when you get back to the Mission.” What! How’d he know?
  2. Pronunciation. Nobody seemed to know how to pronounce “Suppenküche” (the name of Biergarten’s parent company) right. Here’s how you don’t do it:
  3. How not to pronounce ‘Suppenküche’ by Allan Hough

  4. Violence. See for yourself:

But overall it’s pretty nice.

Danny Bowien shows Martha Stewart how he slaps his noodle

Check it out: Danny Bowien from Mission Chinese Food was recently on Martha Stewart. I hope that he later invited one of those Lung Shan old-timers in the back out to demonstrate how to stuff a dumpling.

Cold beer, warm cookie

A touching moment occurred when these two DIY entrepreneurs crossed paths while in the midst of their rounds during one of the nicest weekends in the park EVER.  The gruff visage of Cold Beer melted away as soon as he noticed Warm Cookie Girl, replaced by an affable grin (and perhaps even a hint of blush–I think he may have a bit of a crush).  The two exchanged pleasantries for a moment before engaging in a friendly barter, with Cold Beer offering a nice cold one and Warm Cookie Girl reciprocating with a delectable morsel of her own.

They consummated their encounter with a friendly cheers (beer to cookie) before proceeding on their separate ways to satiate the needs of the Dolores Park masses.

Bi-Rite’s new book about shopping smart and eating healthy is out this week

The book is called Bi-Rite Market’s EAT GOOD FOOD: a grocer’s guide to shopping, cooking and creating community through food. Here’s a promotional video:

They’re also doing some promotional events.

Hot new salsas coming soon at Papalote

The Feast has the scoop:

The original variety, somewhat of a cult classic, made its debut almost a year ago and is a hit in local stores such as Whole Foods, but these new habanero, serrano-tomatillo, and chipotle varieties will have a smaller run. [link]

They go on sale the first week of November. Available at your friendly neighborhood Papalote or at the Papalote Salsa website.

Late night Korean pop-up coming to the Mission this Friday

Former Serpentine sous chef Eric Ehler wrote in to tell us all about Seoul Patch, his new late night Korean pop-up restaurant coming to the Mission this Friday.

Ehler started Seoul Patch in September, and they’ve been operating a lunch pop-up out of Rocketfish in Potrero Hill. Starting this Friday, they’ll be cooking up late night eats at Asiento on 21st and Bryant (that mysterious corner bar with the galaxy mural façade), every other Friday from 10:30pm to 1am. Menu offerings include wings, Korean pancakes, tofu, pickles, and BBQ, and prices will range from $5 to $10.

Pretty exciting stuff given the current lack of Korean fare in the Mission, and a good excuse to migrate over to some of the less traveled corners of the neighborhood.

Heinous pizza toppings

Baby carrots. Really. And I think there’s a pea pod in there. ”Where’d you get that heinous slice?” I asked. Here’s Lindsey’s answer:

bristol farms :/ but it was so tasty.

According to the internet, Bristol Farms is located in some place called Union Square.
