To the asshole at the Thermals show last night

You’re the guy who when the Thermals told us they grew up in SF and it’s always good to be back you shouted, “It’s awful now!”

You’re the problem. Feel free to leave. (And I felt that way even before I was informed that you were a white dude wearing a keffiyeh.)

The Thermals ruled though:

DJ Jay Beaman spinning Brazilian party music tonight in the Lower Haight!

From the official invite:

SF legend (and honorary Brazilian) Jay Beaman has been killing it lately at his new Madrone Art Bar happy hour “Brasilidades” where he spins all his favorite Brazilian party music and the rest of us boogie down. So naturally we asked him to come do it for us at American Tripps!

Come for the BOSSA NOVA and TROPICÁLIA and SAMBA… stay for the PAGODE and FORRO and AXE!!!!!

Also, I’ll be working the door. Come say hi!

Jay gives us a preview:

Q&A with Candy Winters of Candy’s Crush

We’ve been rabid fans of Candy for a loooong time, ever since we saw her absolutely nail “Super Bass” at a DJ Purple karaoke party at Jack’s, waaaay back in the day. (Candy does it better than Nicki Minaj herself, no lie.)

Anyway, her band, Candy’s Crush, is making their live debut right here in the Mission this Friday night (which is both Valentine’s Day *and* Mission Mission’s 7th anniversary) at Verdi Club, opening for the world’s greatest LCD Soundsystem cover band, North American Scum.

We asked Candy if she might be able to give us an idea of what to expect, and she was like totes:

What’s your #1 musical influence?

Prince. Musically and lyrically, he is everything I want to be.

What’s your favorite part about being onstage in front of an audience?

There’s nothing better than being onstage. Personally, I live life pretty much entirely to entertain myself, and if, by doing so, I can entertain other people as well, I feel very satisfied.

How’d you put together your band?

Keith (our bass player) and I started this band after having a conversation about our mutual love for Chaka Khan. We wanted to do something funky that would get people to dance. At the time we were also in weird places with our love lives, so naturally starting a band sounded like a good way to get all the girls/boys. (I’ll put that to the test at our first show!) After that, we eventually recruited Koop (drums) and Rich (guitar) so we could have the sexiest band ever.

How do you feel about Valentine’s Day?

My 5th grade boyfriend bought me chocolates, a fake rose, took me roller skating and made me a mix tape for Valentine’s day (which included Blackstreet, No Doubt and Queen). It finally occurred to me in recent years that Valentine’s Day would never, ever again be so good. Instead of ranting about it, I prefer to use this holiday as an excuse to be with good people, get down on the dance floor and (hopefully) get some action. What more could anyone ask for?

Amen! Get advance tickets (since they’re cheaper than tickets at the door) and RSVP and invite yr friends!

2010 Winter Olympics flashback: Shaun White, Jay Reatard and a little pink guitar

I saw Shaun White on TV yesterday and it reminded me of this video we made in a hotel room in Okinawa in February 2010.

My cousin Jojo, who we’ve heard from a bunch of times before, was going to be spending 3 months exploring the Okinawan countryside, and he knew he’d be needing a guitar, so he picked out this cool pink one, and I think he wanted to make a video showing it off to friends back home. Jay Reatard has just passed away, so Jojo decided to pay tribute.

It turned out pretty epic for a poorly lit, lo-res, 2-minute YouTube video, if you ask me:

P.S. Jojo’s current band, which was formed on this same trip, is named Moe Meguro, after the beloved Japanese curling champ.

20 years of Bay Area indie rock, with special guest Thao Nguyen

Our pal Mai “Fashionist” Le has a radio show on BFF.fm, and today’s edition, airing from 4-6pm, is very special:

I’m doing a “locals only” show with Thao Nguyen as a guest and Nicole Browner as a guest co-host.

I’m programming about 20 years of local Bay Area indie rock: The Fairways, Pavement (Scott lived in the East Bay, while his wife attended Cal), Citizens Here and Abroad (once had a song play for 8 seconds on the OC), Mikal Cronin, Mates of State, Toro y Moi, tUnE yArDs, etc… John Dwyer will be represented by either Ty Segall or the Coachwhips (sort of wish I had music from his “German Gay S&M” electronic duo).

Nicole has not revealed her song choices for the show.

We will also have a ticket giveaway on BFF’s facebook page. 2 tickets to Thao’s show with Sonny and the Sunsets at the Fillmore on Feb. 14th/V-Day.

Listen in!

SMITHSFITS tonight at the Knockout with special guest Terry Malts!

Just because it’s cold and there’s a 100% chance of rain doesn’t mean you have to hideout in your house all day watching Netflix!  Or maybe it does.  But here’s a better idea:  dancing to the SMITHS and MISFITS all night!

Local heartthrobs Terry Malts are playing some tunes too, and who knows?  They might even play some Misfits covers!

Check it all out here.

Heatsick, all the way from Berlin, headlines Haçeteria tonight

Here’s the scoop:

This month Haçeteria is beyond proud to present a very rare out-of-town guest, Heatsick, alias of Berlin-based producer Stephen Warwick. Occupying a space between experimental electronics and outsider house, Heatsick is a rising star associated with the ever-dynamic PAN records and just dropped his new hyper-modern, inventive, dystopian LP Re-engineering on PAN. Heatsick’s live P.A.s are famously both playful and heady, rhythmic and exploratory, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what he has in store for us.

RSVP and invite your friends! And watch this mellow but mesmerizing video:
