The art of an incredibly trippy 3D-seeming animated GIF

Our pal Doc Pop, often a proponent of digital technology over analog, has been experimenting with film lately, and today he mashed digital and analog up by making a batch of killer GIFs from photos he took with some crazy old camera with four lenses.

Amongst all the crummy old loaner cameras in the Noisebridge dark room I found a Nishika N8000, a camera that shoots 4 side by side lenses that trigger simultaneously to capture multiple points of an object. These cameras shoot on common 35mm film, but the final process of printing on lenticular prints is a bit of a pain, so I decided to try my hand at animating each shot as a .gif.

Read on for the rest of the pics and a thorough explanation of his process.

How did you spend your sunny Sunday?

Bruno's or Brun's

Seeing The Avengers again in an air conditioned movie theater? Waiting in line for Bi Rite Creamery? Walking the length of the city borders? Jumping off of a rope swing into the Russian River?

It’s gonna be hot again today. Hopefully you’re not stuck sweating it out in a cubicle.

Extra-terrestrial found on Mission driveway, promptly covered-up

The truth is out there. Or was out there. On someone’s driveway. Flickr’r Sangroncito reports:

I walked out of my front door and found this extraterrestrial lying in my next door neighbor’s driveway. When I returned an hour later he was gone.

Has anyone seen any weather balloons lately?

The Mission: Putting the temporary in contemporary

From 1954 to 1974 Lakeside Liquors was a little mom and pop shop at 2188 Mission Street. Local photographer Dave Glass/Dizzy Atmosphere grew up with the store as his actual mom and pop’s shop. He recently shared a shot of the exterior and surrounding Mission Street apparently taken in 1984.

Dave’s got a ton of other great Mission photos on his Flickr page.

Now here’s a set of pipes you can bring to the park without worrying about cops.

Dreamy, ethereal photos of Heirloom Cafe

Heidi Swanson of the excellent 101 Cookbooks snapped these lovely photos of the Kinfolk brunch at Heirloom Cafe over the weekend. Sounds like these Kinfolk brunches are a traveling series that bring together local artisans and small businesses in various cities.

I’ve never eaten at Heirloom Cafe, but I have friends who live above it and I’ve peeked in a few times while waiting for one of them to answer the door. Anyone know if it’s worth a try?

Dolores Park after the rain

It’s an Instagram, so these colors are likely exaggerated, but it’s still pretty.
