20 years of Bay Area indie rock, with special guest Thao Nguyen

Our pal Mai “Fashionist” Le has a radio show on BFF.fm, and today’s edition, airing from 4-6pm, is very special:

I’m doing a “locals only” show with Thao Nguyen as a guest and Nicole Browner as a guest co-host.

I’m programming about 20 years of local Bay Area indie rock: The Fairways, Pavement (Scott lived in the East Bay, while his wife attended Cal), Citizens Here and Abroad (once had a song play for 8 seconds on the OC), Mikal Cronin, Mates of State, Toro y Moi, tUnE yArDs, etc… John Dwyer will be represented by either Ty Segall or the Coachwhips (sort of wish I had music from his “German Gay S&M” electronic duo).

Nicole has not revealed her song choices for the show.

We will also have a ticket giveaway on BFF’s facebook page. 2 tickets to Thao’s show with Sonny and the Sunsets at the Fillmore on Feb. 14th/V-Day.

Listen in!

Heatsick, all the way from Berlin, headlines Haçeteria tonight

Here’s the scoop:

This month Haçeteria is beyond proud to present a very rare out-of-town guest, Heatsick, alias of Berlin-based producer Stephen Warwick. Occupying a space between experimental electronics and outsider house, Heatsick is a rising star associated with the ever-dynamic PAN records and just dropped his new hyper-modern, inventive, dystopian LP Re-engineering on PAN. Heatsick’s live P.A.s are famously both playful and heady, rhythmic and exploratory, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what he has in store for us.

Here is the condo complex that might replace Elbo Room

SocketSite followed up on its original report, and found that the building owners are indeed pretty far along into the process of replacing Elbo Room with this big ‘ol condo complex:

A detailed set of architectural plans has been drafted for the project and the building’s owners have authorized the architects to act as their agents in submitting applications for environmental reviews, a historic resource evaluation, variances and Conditional Use. That’s every step required to get the project formally approved.

In fact, a month after the Planning Department provided their feedback on the preliminary plans, the application fee for which was nearly $5,000 alone, a follow-up meeting was scheduled between the Planning Department and architects to discuss next steps and plans for submitting the Environmental Evaluation and Historic Resource report for the project to move forward.

Things to do tonight: Forlorn Candy Corn returns; SFist happy hour w/ Wes Burger; Ping Pong Nite

I know it’s raining, but hear me out…..

1.) Back in 2009 we wrote about Forlorn Candy Corn on an almost daily basis. Some of you may recall. Today, the artist behind the phenomenon, Briar Bonifacio, debuts a show at Adobe Books. It’s called “Mostly True” and features a couple other artists as well. Know this: Forlorn Candy Corn makes multiple appearances! 6-9pm. RSVP and invite your friends!

2.) SFist is having a big happy hour party at Virgil’s Sea Room. Hang out with the best bloggers in town, score a tote bag, cash in on drink specials, and eat a Wes Burger for dinner! 5:30-7:30pm. RSVP and invite your friends!

3.) Finally, since you’re down in that part of the ‘hood anyway, Ping Pong Nite at El Rio (just like every Thursday)! 9-midnight.

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
