Two new local music videos

Back once again with some new music videos from the BAYCAT (Bayview Hunters Point Center for Arts and Tech) youth media producers. As I must mention, I happen to work at this organization, but also highly enjoy the work that these kids are producing, and since their neighborhood doesn’t have a blog like this I like to share it here.

First up is a music video made with youth from City of Dreams, a non-profit based out of the Oakdale neighborhood in Hunters Point. The video was organized by BAYCAT, produced by Zara Ahmed and Katie Cruz and was directed by the youth for a new song by Trackademicks featuring Lyrics Born. Yep, Lyrics Born. I was out when the video was shot and I’m still bummed about it.

Next up, “Looking For”, was produced by the Music Production class with Evan Adams. The youth wrote the lyrics and produced the beats, and the filmmaking class shot the video in Potrero Hill, again with Zara Ahmed and Katie Cruz. The song and video are part of the 25th episode of their show, Zoom In. This one is about the 2012 Election. You may notice the personas they chose for themselves in the video: the goth, the nerd, the hipster and the student.

Man shot four times on Natoma

Last night a latino man was shot four times on Natoma Street at 15th. Apparently he is in critical condition now, but seemed awake and was moving when I watched them load him into the ambulance. From what I could see the shots were to his stomach.

Here’s hoping he recovers well. Thoughts go out to the friends and family.

What sort of testicle?

Pick-pocketed at the Knockout

Our pal C’mon Pony had a great time at Debaser up until she noticed all her shit was gone:

My purse was on me the entire time and I noticed at some point that the latch was open. I soon realized my phone was gone and initially thought it had fallen out, so I frantically searched the floor around me before I realized my wallet was also gone, and it became clear that someone had somehow grabbed whatever they wanted out of my purse without me noticing. UFOs over the Mission: ‘They’re forming a triangle now, dude!’

Reader Enrique B. explains:

My wife and I were about to head home parked in Valencia, when she noticed these lights in formation above the San Francisco Mission District.

I wasn’t sure if at first if it was another Tequila hazed mirage, but myself and a few bi-standars where all in complete awe at the lights we saw on Valencia. Please excuse my drunken reaction. This was the first time I ever saw something like this. There’s also a yellow speck which is from my iPhone lens but it’s clear which lights I’m referring to.

At first glance, I thought it might be fireworks but when they started to form a triangular formation, I knew this was uncommon.

You folks be the judge. My final conclusion….UFO’s are here for Papalote salsa.

Mission Vegan: SanJalisco!

Flautas/sopes at SanJalisco. My food photography sucks.

I can’t even keep up with all the new restaurants on Valencia anymore. But who cares because South Van Ness is where it is at in terms of culinary delights (hi, Whiz Burger). SanJalisco (formerly known as Los Jarritos) is an old standard in the Mission at 20th and SVN and a longtime favorite of mine. It is never too crowded, the staff is friendly, and the menu has an illustration of a friendly goat waiter. Oh yeah, and you can get not one, but two dishes made vegan AAAAND you can get them in a combo plate! The potato flautas and cactus sopes combination plate is my jam and I’m pretty sure it will cure any hangover. Just be sure to tell them “no dairy” because both come with cheese and sour cream. They’re used to us crazy vegans at this point so they’re chill and understanding about special requests.

For some masochistic reason, I subjected myself to Yelp and saw that people were hating on SanJalisco due to the fact that they don’t serve margaritas. Shut up, Yelpers! If you’re really desperate for a margarita, just hit up Muzio’s market beforehand and buy a can of The Club Margarita and an airport bottle of tequila and drink it on the way there. OR stop being a dork and order a Negra Modelo or Bohemia–both are vegan!

They also specialize in birria dishes (hence the friendly goat waiter mascot–boohoo) and other non-veg dishes so it is a good spot to go with friends/family of all different eating persuasions.

Haçeteria, my favorite dance party in the city, finally comes to the Mission!

This party originally took place at Deco Lounge in the Tenderloin, but ever since that place shuttered to make way for a new endeavor by the Bender’s crew, the boys of Haçeteria have been looking for new digs. I’m not sure if they’ve inked anything permanent, but for this month at least they’re in the Mission!

Here’s their official “about” for those of you that still need to know:

Haçeteria is a fog and laser fueled monthly dance night organized by DJs Tristes Tropiques, Nihar, Jason P, and Smac, who play the steamiest electronic dance music vinyl slabs, including Classic House, Acid, Techno, and Rave as well as flirtations with more recent related rhythms. Club Haçeteria is also dedicated to highlighting a diverse array of live electronic dance musicians that are breaking new ground while moving bodies on the dance floor.
