Drink of the week: Lagunitas Daytime IPA in Dolores Park

I haven’t gotten excited about a Lagunitas beer in awhile, but this my favorite new IPA since Ranger. It’s a “fractional” IPA, which presumably means the opposite of a double IPA (doubles typically have more hops and more alcohol.) With only 4.65% ABV, about the same as a Budweiser, this beer is custom-made for drinking all day and then overeating at Benders. And it tastes like marijuana and peaches, and it’s delicious. If anyone’s seen it on tap, let me know where and I’ll meet you there in 15.

Free Bradley Manning rally at 16th and Mission

Many veterans are out in the streets this afternoon protesting the 2010 arrest and detainment of Bradley Manning, the Army soldier who gave WikiLeaks hundreds of thousands of classified documents related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The leak brought to light many details and events that embarrassed the military, such as efforts to drastically lower the public civilian death count.

You can learn more about Manning and the case at bradleymanning.org, or get the gist of it at Manning’s Wikipedia page.

R.I.P. Matthew Africa

SF Weekly shares the horrible news about the famed East Bay DJ and KALX stalwart, as related by Africa’s sister:

My brother, Matthew Africa, was killed in a car accident on Monday afternoon. He and his beloved wife, Ha Le, were returning from a trip to Yosemite when their car collided with a big rig on a highway near Modesto. They tell us he died instantly; miraculously, she survived with multiple fractures. His absence is unbearable. Please keep our families in your thoughts and prayers.

I think everyone who knew him is probably pretty broken up right now, so I’ll just say that we’ve lost a really good soul and if it feels unfair, it’s because it is.

Did someone steal a motorbike with a construction Bobcat?

It certainly appears to be a possibility considering this account by eyewitness Bernard, who also snapped the above photo.  Here’s what he had to say about the situation:

I took this picture yesterday at 6pm on 25th and SouthVaness. Unfortunately my phone died just after I took this picture otherwise I would have called the police. This tractor was carrying away a motorized bike from mission then down s.vaness. It was being followed slowly by a sketchy grey older suv. There were three latino males in the van most were in their late thirtys to early forties. The tractor driver had on construction cloths and construction hat that almost made it look legit.

The only other possibility I can surmise is that someone’s non-functioning motorbike was being transported to a mechanic by a buddy who happened to have  some construction equipment at his disposal.  Of course, that’s a bit of a stretch too, but is it crazier than someone making off with a motorcycle in a Bobcat?

Double rainbow overload!

Yesterday evening San Francisco had an epic rainbow. We posted a few pictures that were submitted to us by readers, but I figured we’d better also share the wealth of trippy pics that’ve been popping up in our various feeds ever since. There’ve been a ton though, so you’re gonna have to do some of the work yourself. Pick a name you like, and see that name’s pic (or pics) — or click through to each and every one for a DOUBLE RAINBOW OVERLOAD:

Anyone know where to get pulque?

I’ve never tried pulque, which is an opaque white agave beer from Mexico. It’s evidently available in cans as well as served in restaurants. Anyone know where I can get some in the neighborhood or the Bay Area? The closest I’ve found is a taqueria outside Sacramento, which incidentally looks awesome.

Update: coincidentally, my favorite cocktail blogger just did a post on Pulque!

Evening rainbow

Apparently this evening while I was stuck inside (ugh, buildings, who needs ‘em?) we were graced with some amazing skies that included some rainbows. Thanks to the readers who sent in these pics.

[Thanks, Matthew!]
