North American Scum performs the songs of LCD Soundsystem, and Boob Tube Armada performs TV theme songs, plus Picklehorse

Here are my thoughts on this show:

  • Love this flyer!
  • Love a reason to go to Hotel Utah!
  • North American Scum ALWAYS kill, and somehow my thirst for live LCD Soundsystem covers just never seems to wane
  • I really hope Boob Tube Armada is working on True Detective.
  • Picklehorse seems pretty fun

Nothing but ’00s hip hop

The Last Nite gang is about to cut loose, and this time it’s at Slate Bar right here in the Mission:

DJs Jamie Jams and Rapid Fire bring you all the hits from a time when hip hop got crunk.

It’s like we drank your sizzurp, stole your courvoisier and rode off with your spinners.

Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: I Walk around Los Angeles

Every now and then, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us, picks his 13 favorites, and we publish them here and it’s called “Bad Blood.” It used to be weekly but it’s become more sporadic since Joshua’s move to Los Angeles a few months back. He still comes back to SF every chance he gets (which is great for all of us) but regardless of where he shoots his rolls, it’s always a joy to get a peek inside his process with each new edition. Here’s what Joshua has to say about this week’s:

Everyone spends so much time down here driving. I guess in other cities you spend the same amount of time in transit on the bus or train or whatever but I see so many people in LA driving alone. Why not carpool? I walk around Los Angeles still as often as possible, it beats going to the gym and drinking juice which is also what everyone here seems be into. Same with E-Cigs and black clothing. Most of this series was shot in or around Hollywood.

Thanks, Joshua! Be sure to follow him on Instagram and on Twitter. Ten more shots after the jump:

Last chance to walk amongst those huge sculptures on Crissy Field

They’re gonna disappear sometime this weekend! (I guess watching crews dismantle them might be pretty cool too.)

Pretty cool song lyrics by the Patxi’s Noe Valley online ordering system

Nicely done, Patxi’s Noe Valley!

(I’m a little stoned.)

Thieves hijack Sean Lennon’s beats near Franklin and Hayes

From Mr. Lennon’s ‘gram:

Our percussionist Connor Grant’s laptop was stolen today in San Francisco! Our van window was smashed this morning as he was getting coffee near Franklin and Hayes. BIG REWARD if computer is returned unharmed! NO QUESTIONS ASKED! If anyone knows anything pleeeeease contact us at mutethehead@gmail.com

My dad’s car got burgled on that exact same block a couple months back. I guess, never park on that block!

Mission Community Market debuting its new Street Stage mobile performance parklet this Thursday!

MCM is just getting better and better! Here’s the deal:

The local talents that entertain MCM’s market-goers each week will finally have a performance space to call their own on Thursday evenings. In cooperation with MCM and the SF Pavement to Parks program, the SF designers behind Street Stage have created a mobile parklet that carves out a unique space for MCM performers. Designed by John Francis and Ross Hansen with street performers in mind, the MCM Street Stage will bring new distinction to the San Francisco’s vibrant public performance scene.

Can’t wait to see it!

Unreleased vintage ’00s music video by local rockers the Passionistas finally emerges

These guys totally ruled. I first saw them open for the Willowz at the Make-Out Room… holy shit… ten years ago, in ’04, around the time the Willowz had that song in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and were poised to become the biggest rock band in the world, but were still playing the Make-Out Room. For $6:

I didn’t have any friends here really, so I was standing alone in a corner between bands, and the show was sort of poorly attended because it was on a Monday night, so Myles (the drummer then but the singer in this new video) came over and made friends with me. We were both going to SF State, and we were both drummers, and I think we both lived in the Mission. It sure was a different time back then. Delfina was the only fancy restaurant. There was a KFC on Valencia. And bands like the Passionistas could still afford to live here.

They were a bare-bones rock ‘n’ roll band, a little arty but not too arty, with Myles’ slightly off-kilter drumming style and Aaron’s definitely off-kilter crooning. I would see them every chance I could after that. And I bought a lot of their (usually homemade) merch. Eventually they got another drummer so Myles could better help front the band, as you’ll see in a second.

They broke up in 2009 I think, and Aaron and Myles went on to do some amaaazing solo projects. But there was never anything quite like the Passionistas, so I was extremely pleasantly surprised to find this newly available song and video in my Facebook feed last night. It totally rules too:

(The Willowz were okay, but not as good as they got 5 years later on their killer album Everyone.)
