The fine folks at Bernalwood today shine a spotlight on a local business which has managed to cultivate a vibe that is not ’10s SF or ’00s SF or even late- or mid-’90s SF — but early-’90s SF:

Want to know what counterculture looked like in the analog days before Tim Berners-Lee unleashed his Prometheus on our unsuspecting planet? What were the sensibilities of a young and alienated generation in an age of ascendant Reaganism, cassette tapes, and desktop publishing euphoria? What were the totems and signifiers of this edgy, halcyon time?

What did it look like?  What did it smell like??

Wonder no more: It looked and smelled exactly like Thrillhouse Records.

It’s a legendary place. You know you wanna.

Here’s the deal, according to Craigslist:

We are three women looking for a new officemate to share our unique space inside an incredibly unique arts collective space located in the Mission District. You are a full- or part-time creative freelancer type person who isn’t always on the hustle for how to make 500 dollars fast and has time for us, but we’re also open minded.

The shared space is an open 25″ x 10″ room with two white walls, one bright sea green wall, and one black wall. We have built three desks into the space using redwood and welded rebar. We also created a small chill space with two chairs, a coffee table, a record player, and a bar set-up. We’d love your creative input and help in finishing the design of the space, if that’s something that interests you.

We are not directly inside the arts space but rather right next door to it. We are considered part of the community and have access to the shared space inside, including a magical events space and kitchen/bar area. Other tenants include filmmakers and a community radio station. On the first floor is a gallery space that is currently being built out. Our space is on the second floor and there is a working elevator.

As you can see, it’s basically a special bike path that exists a little higher than street level and a little lower than the sidewalk. The SF Bike Coalition reports:

The showcase bikeway is part of the Mission/Valencia Gateway project and will stretch southbound on Valencia Street from Cesar Chavez Street to Duncan Street.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2015 and continue until mid-2016. When completed, the Mission Valencia Green Gateway will create an improved link between the Valencia and San José corridors, making the North to South Connecting the City route even safer and more comfortable for everyone.

On foggier days, I love bringing my laptop down to the Embarcadero and working from one of the piers. Headphones on, watching the ships roll in while I’m working on soundtracks. I shot this roll a few weeks back on my Nimslo 3D camera with some Kodak Gold film.

Yesterday I wrote about an inspiring scene at a real Strokes show I was at on Sunday night. And I have no doubt this Friday’s fake Strokes show will be just as good, seeing as how its being put on by the folks at Last Nite (spawn of ’90s indie dance party Debaser), on the occasion of their 1st birthday:
