Get into the Asian Art Museum for free and also save lives

Asian Art Museum Blog explains:

This weekend the museum is hosting  a special event at our Target Free Sunday. Be The Match Marrow Registry, a nonprofit organization that matches patients with unrelated bone marrow donors, will be conducting registrations at the museum—complete with cheek cell swabbing!

Why? Great question. Be The Match approached the museum because they have a shortage of South Asian donors in their registry. Bay Area entrepreneur Amit Gupta shared his experience:

Two weeks ago I got a call from my doctor because I’d been feeling worn out and was losing weight, and wasn’t sure why. He was brief: “Amit, you’ve got acute leukemia. You need to enter treatment right away.” I have a couple more months of chemo to go, and then the next step is a bone marrow transplant. Minorities are severely underrepresented in the bone marrow pool, and I need help.

With the Maharaja exhibition in full swing and Sanjay Patel’s show opening next week, the museum is quite a hub for South Asian cultural happenings right now. Be The Match thought it would be a great opportunity to reach out to the South Asian community, and we agreed.

Volunteers from Be The Match will be at the museum from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm this Sunday, November 6. No matter what your background, Be The Match would be grateful for your participation!

Haçeteria celebrates its one-year haçiversary tonight at Deco Lounge with special guest C.L.A.W.S.

In case you didn’t notice, the big beats being dropped last night at the ping pong block party came courtesy of the Haçeteria crew. They’ve held it down at several ping pong events now, and their sets have been uniformly bangin’.

They have their own night once a month at Deco Lounge on Larkin (just down the block from Saigon Sandwich), and it is also bangin’. Tonight they celebrate their one-year anniversary with a special guest live set from C.L.A.W.S. AKA Can’t Live Anywhere Without Sandwiches (best acronym ever, right?) AKA Brian Hock AKA the drummer from Bronze AKA former member of the Vanishing. Here’s a free sample:

Shooting near 16th and Mission leaves three wounded

Mission Local was on the scene:

Three men were shot just before 11 p.m. on Friday night, following a brief shouting match at 16th and Mission streets. All three victims were transported by ambulance to the hospital, and two, ages 24 and 42, have life-threatening injuries. The third man, 34, is in better condition.

Police have no suspects in custody and no known suspect information yet.

Josh Gonia, who watched the scene from outside El Capitan Hotel on Mission Street, saw the confrontation build up to the round of gunshots.

According to Gonia, two men were outside of the McDonald’s on Mission Street, yelling at another two men across the street at the bus stop. One man ran after another with a baseball bat.

Mission-style street food at Berlin-style ping pong block party TONIGHT

Up top is a pile of pineapple-grilled onions, the kind you’ll find at Eagle Dogs. Below that is a frybread taco by Rocky Yazzie. Both vendors will be on the scene at the American Tripps Berlin-Style Ping Pong Block Party tonight at Z Space and Coffee bar (on Florida Street between 17th and Mariposa).

There will also be some classic Berlin cinema on the big screen, and lots of fresh new paddles to break in. And remember the party goes real late. (And pretty much all of the action takes place indoors, except for the beer garden.)

Showing respect for one’s neighbors by appropriating their culture at your convenience

DoVulcanTitsDefyLogic? posted this, with the caption:

My roommate’s response to this picture: “I bet some freshman from Brown put that up.”

Come to think of it, at Garfield Park, I did hear someone say, “Where are all the brown people at?” Was he talking about Brown University? I guess so!
