17th & Capp Indoor Block Party

If you like art or music or food or short films or rad people or just kickin’ it on Capp Street you should head to these fine institutions this Saturday. Three art spaces mere steps away from one another are joining forces to simultaneously rock your world.

The Sub will have art and photography on display for your viewing delight as well as live music and DJ skills. 199 Capp Street.

Kitsch Gallery will host a silent auction to benefit Homeless Children’s Network and have some pleasing music to lull you into giving. 3265 17th Street.

The Secret Alley (of which I am a member) will take you through paintings and installations downstairs, then upstairs to show you super sweet short films presented by Wholphin in the afternoon and then rock your body with live jammy jams in the evening. 180 Capp Street.

Oddfellow Shoes-On-Wire Art

Shoes-on-wire art is gonna be huge. What better way is there to get your name out and indicate that you can buy crack on this block?

Call For Art That Can Be Thrown From Bicycles

Papergirl SF is teaming up with Mission Bicycle Company for a cool art show of work that can be rolled up and delivered from bikes.

From Papergirl SF:

In the style of American paperboys, rolled art pieces are distributed in the streets to random passers-by for FREE!

Mission Bicycle Co. has offered to be a drop off site for submission (deadline is September 18th) and they are going to host an exhibition of all the work in the Women’s Building on September 26th. So if you don’t mind having your awesome art thrown at strangers on the street, get to work.

Remember, the medium must be deliverable via bike. Don’t just submit flyers for your band’s next show. That would be sort of lame.

Tranquil Dolores Park

This impressionist magic marker rendering of Dolores Park by Todd Berman gives me a tickle. It sort of feels more like the park than an actual picture of the park. And the original can be yours for just $65.

More Childhood Nostalgia in Neighborhood Street Art, This Time From the '90s

Remember how in Turtles in Time you could grab a Foot Soldier and throw him TOWARD YOURSELF? Like, AT THE CAMERA? Dang, I love nostalgia.

Mission: Comics & Art In Comics

Mission: Comics and Art‘s own Leef Smith was recently immortalized in comic form, along with two other local comic shop guys and a few old school ones. The amazing drafstman Jon Adams illustrates and writes the piece for The Bold Italic.

As drawn by Jon Adams.

As photographed by AD.

This Saturday Leef invites you into his awesome shop on 20th Street for a performance by Marian Call. Her music is rad and when you hear it you know why she’s playing at a comic book store.

What's Going on Here, Guy Spraying Kerosene in His Own Face?

Whether the π/beers thing is related or not, I have no idea what is going on in this image. I’ve zoomed way in and can’t seem to figure what that appendage growing out of that guy’s upper torso is. Looks like an illustration in a “Say No to Spraying Kerosene in Your Own Face” pamphlet from the doctor’s office — but that’s not a real thing. Halp!

Gallery Hijinks in the Mission TONIGHT!!!

It’s always a fun time when a new gallery opens in the neighborhood, and tonight promises to be no exception as Gallery Hijinks makes its debut on the Mission art scene.  The fun starts at 7pm tonight and features two different yet enticing exhibitions.

Pictured above is the offering from the Free Life Center, a large scale freestanding installation crafted from salvaged building materials that can be modularly configured for a variety of purposes, kind of like that parklet on 22nd Street, but will probably just end up getting hotboxed.  Looks like it was pretty fun to put together, though!

For a more visceral experience, check out Jerking Off In Bunkbeds for a collection of photos that will leave you feeling dried up, empty and ready to molest life!  Anytime you get the chance to come away with a new book called Fingerbanging Amelia Earheart, you really just have to do it.

The gallery opening is from 7-10pm tonight, and musical performances will be happening on Saturday from 6-9pm at this exciting new space on 2309 Bryant at 21st Street.  Did I mention that the TCB Courier dudes are also involved in this project?  Seriously, bike messengers and art together at last, and unbeatable combination.  Check it out tonight!

Barcelona and San Francisco and Ghostbusters

I figured out why Barcelona and San Francisco were fated to become sister cities. It’s the street art, stupid! Both cities are obsessed with ’80s pop culture. Check it out:
