Demystifying the Blue Macaw

Ever wondered what the inside of the Blue Macaw looks like? It was almost two years ago we first took a virtual look inside. And we’ve mentioned a couple of fun-sounding events since then. But has anybody actually gone inside yet?

I know you’re still curious. Tonight, you can find out at this show. Stay tuned for a follow-up post!

MM Bloody Marython Round 2 this Sunday!

Now that we can finally manage to look a bloody mary in the face again without experiencing severe nausea after all of that ridiculous indulgence during our initial foray, we figured it was time to get moving on round 2 of the Mission Mission Bloody Marython.  Last time we held the tour on a Saturday to provide us with plenty of time to recover the next day, but that unfortunately forced us to miss all of the bartenders who bring their bloody mary best on a Sunday!  Luckily, thanks to the upcoming 3 day weekend afforded by Memorial Day, this is the perfect opportunity to delve into their creations while still enjoying a buffer day of recovery.

So, please join us at 12 noon this Sunday for the next installment of the Mission Mission Bloody Marython.  We haven’t exactly solidified the route yet, but at the moment the idea is to hit up (in roughly this order):

  • Thieves Tavern (14th @ Guerrero) – home of the vegan bloody mary
  • The Attic (24th @ Mission) – tiny cubes of cheese!
  • Pop’s (24th @ York) – maybe we can get some BBQ too
  • Phone Booth (26th and S. Van Ness) – a dark horse contender
  • Argus Lounge (Mission @ Valencia) – everyone keeps saying I need to try these

It will be a merry bloody mary fueled romp through the Mission, with a few nice walks in between for some exercise too!  Look, we even made a Facebook event page.  We’ll also probably post an update here when we finalize our route and schedule.  See you on Sunday at noon!

Stand-up comedy at the Roxie tomorrow

You should totally go to this and support laughs: Uptown Almanac is throwing a comedy bash featuring some of our favorite local stand-up comedians, including Sean Keane and Chris Garcia, at the Roxie tomorrow, Tuesday May 10th.

It’s only $6.50 and there will be lots of complimentary PBR to go around! So if you drink six, that’s like a $3 value. Starts at 7:30pm. We’ll be there, so if you want to take out the entire Mission blogging community all at once, that’s your chance to strike.

Presale tix are available here.

Cinco de Drinko

Cinco de Mayo — the holiday that commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French in 1862, but better known as yet another reason to take countless tequila shots and get plastered on a Thursday night, has arrived.  But what to do?  Where to go?  Here are some helpful hints for those looking to to have what I can only promise as a righteous hangover Friday morning:

  • Madrone Art Bar: I know this isn’t in the Mission, but check it:  FREE Papalote burritos.  FREE!  Party starts at 6pm, burritos start at 10pm, and 5 different DJ’s will be spinning all night long.
  • El Rio: They’ll be hosting a special presentation of Red Hot Burlesque Presents: Go Deep, Let’s Wrestle At El Rio!  I know this has nothing to do with Cinco de Mayo, but it looks super crazy — from El Rio’s  websiteCome with your sense of humor and get ready to ogle, hoot and holler. Every show features hot bods, pasties, outrageous costumes, a lot of humor and, of course, bumpin’ and grindin’! With a rotating cast of over 500 people all over the world. This show includes local and visiting talent! A show with out boundaries including bizarre beauties and senseless sideshow. Not for the faint of heart or weak of humor.
  • Dolores Park:  Actually happening on the 7th of May, the “alcohol free and family friendly” festival celebrating Cinco de Mayo will be going on from 10am until 6pm.  More details over at MissionLocal.
  • Brick and Mortar Music Hall: Dance all night to samba and electro-pop at this brand new venue that just opened at Mission and Duboce, according to Eater SF.
  • Free cab rides! Woohoo!

I’m pretty positive that anywhere you go, whether it be your favorite taqueria or bar will have some sort of margarita special going on, so it won’t be too difficult to find SOMETHING to do.

1462 Paper Snowflakes

This late afternoon Cody Frost will be creating performance art in the window of Adobe Books. Check out the promo video below.

Super big gay dance party

If you’ve never experienced the magic that is Hard French, the wildly irreverent courtyard party thrown at El Rio on Saturdays, then you clearly aren’t doing this whole “livin’ in the Mission” thing right.  Luckily, this Saturday is your big chance to ameliorate that transgression, as Hard French is teaming up with Stay Gold and Mango to throw the most hella gay dance party afternoon of the year (so far) from 3-8pm.  Not only will there be rad jams and most likely a glitter kiddie pool, but your admission ($7-500 sliding scale) will help save the Dyke March which is in danger of being cancelled this year (and possibly forever) due to serious financial difficulties.  Check out all the deets here.

You’ve been warned, so don’t screw it up this time.

Raise money for SF bike messengers by drinking and riding fixies tonight

From the Macaframa website:

The event is finally upon us. Please come out to support a good cause and race and drink with your friends. There will be great prizes for the racers, as well as for our raffle, and cheap drink specials from Fernet and PBR! A portion of the proceeds will go to the SF Bike Messengers Association’s Broken Bones Fund

The race will be fixed only and will be an alleycat format. The event will have a DJ set and live performance by Nick Waterhouse and the Tarots, who have been blowing UP lately!

I know first hand how expensive it to be hit by a car while biking, and these guys take that risk and pay the price everyday doing their jobs.  So why not enjoy some PBR and take in a good show to help them out?  And if you’re feeling adventurous, jump in the race too!  If I had a fixie, I would totally be all over it — anyone got a lender bike?
