Over at the Free Farm Stand, Tree extends an invitation to one and all to maybe go blackberry picking this weekend:

The black berries on Bernal Hill are ripening and I was thinking of checking them out in more detail and possibly picking them if they are ripe enough on Saturday possibly in the morning. Please contact me if you are interested. I will also harvest plums and loquats in the Secret Garden the same day.

Just read that Yum Yum House is closed for good. Never ate there meself, but always liked the signage. Where’s it gonna end up? Anybody else vote for on the wall at Bender’s next to the old Leather Tongue signage?

Not that Beretta needs more praise (just today it was singled out as the New York Times’ most egregious omission in its weekend Valencia Street feature) but we finally did pay a visit late last week. Katie had asked Mission Mission readers for advice (Beretta: Hype or the Real Deal?), and she got a hearty response.

Many made clear that the cocktail menu is the star of the show, and it was commenter Johnny0 that mentioned the Improved Whiskey by name. Great name, and it lived up to it. Rye, absinthe and some other stuff, dry as can be. If you like whiskey, be sure to get yourself an Improved Whiskey. Thanks for the tip, Johnny.

We’re pretty sure all the food was good. The staff was efficient. The decor was fine despite being deficient one fountain. We also had an Italian lager we’d never heard of called Menabrea. Menabrea has a funny website.

I don’t think the Fugees are playing or anything, but like the poster says, there’s entertainment, beer, food, demos, and it’s all for a good cause. Franklin Field is part of that park at 16th and Bryant that you never really see because it’s up above sidewalk level. Lael checked it out recently and said it seemed cool. Full disclosure: I went to this Sports Basement a few weeks ago to buy a soccer ball, and the staff was very helpful.

Tonight Soap Gallery hosts a reception for an exhibition featuring Verda Alexander‘s installation Run A Ways:

Transportation systems have evolved to become great feats of engineering that embody our society’s advancement and our anxieties.

Our ability to travel at great speeds gets us there fast, but a wrong turn, technical malfunction, human error or terrorist act manifest the precarious nature of travel.

Yeah we just got back from a road trip to San Diego, and it’s true: travel wouldn’t be nearly so fun and romantic if its nature weren’t so precarious. Also, we like cardboard stuff. The party includes live music and runs from 6-9pm.

Dunno, isn’t the 26 kind of useless? Maybe it is less crowded than the Mission Street buses and thus smells a lot better, but it doesn’t really do anything they don’t. And it’s so much nicer just walking down Valencia. Anyway, does anybody have any anger to express?

Today I ducked into Paxton Gate for a few minutes, and I’m glad I did — the cacti in the back room are in bloom!

If I wasn’t heading for the park, or didn’t have a million-pound bag on my shoulder, I would have rounded them up in my arms and lovingly killed them softly with my less-than-green thumb. Check them out before the blossoms disappear for another year. If you adopt one, please keep us up to date on its progress.

I once owned a Paxton Gate cactus, and it erupted into bloom only once in the two and a half years I owned it. I continue to have a soft spot for blooming cacti. Here’s mine:
