Ty Segall to headline the Fillmore in 2013

How bout this? We’ve seen local boy Ty Segall (pictured) perform at the Eagle, the Knockout, El Rio, Thee Parkside, 12 Galaxies, the steps of City Hall, the Great American Music Hall, Brick & Mortar Music Hall, and Treasure Island — and now he’s apparently going to headline the Fillmore, the biggest venue in the entire universe. Good work, Ty!

Panda heads straight to the Mission to celebrate his historic performance in Game 1

SF Gate has the scoop:

How do you celebrate when you’ve just hit three home runs in a World Series game? You head to the Mission to your favorite restaurant and convince the owner to open up for you, even though the kitchen was already closed.

Pablo Sandoval, his older brother (and uncanny look-alike) Michael and a few friends went straight from AT&T Park to Limon, the Peruvian restaurant on Valencia, on Wednesday night. The restaurant closes at 10, and Sandoval wasn’t finished with his postgame demands until well after 9:30. But being a star slugger has its perks.

“You have to open up after he homers three times,” said owner and chef Martin Castillo. “He’s a great customer. We always go the extra mile for him.”

Smithsfits Halloween this Saturday

I guess that since Halloween falls on a Wednesday this year, most people seem to be doing their thing tomorrow rather than on the actual day.  While the acceptance of this may be debatable to hardcore Halloween purists, most of us simply benefit from having two Halloween opportunities to get weird!  And if you need ideas on how to get it started Saturday, embrace the darkness with Smithsfits at the Knockout–there’ll be a costume contest with a $100 prize, and special guest Gary War opens at 10pm!

Check out all the details, plus RSVP and invite your friend here!

Drink of the week: Rodeo Ghost

Valencia’s West of Pecos, the Tex-Mex restaurant from the people behind seafood stalwart Woodhouse Fish Co., has been firing on all cylinders. Hiding behind the painted cow skulls and dried chiles hanging from the ceiling are some great hearty dishes (I’m partial to the ribs.) The happy hour dollar tacos (pork, duck, and veggie) from 5-6:30 really put it over the top.

As for the drink menu, the selections have been pared down to the best of the best and at this point it’s hard to go wrong. Although the ladies seem to gravitate toward the beautiful and tasty Prickly Pecos Marg, I spend most of my time with the Rodeo Ghost, a bitter, smoky mezcal cocktail that’s surprisingly drinkable, which unfortunately often leads me to have three in a row.  A modified negroni, the drink uses amaro and bitters to cut through the overbearing flavor of the mezcal. And it just looks sharp, right?

Stick it to the Super PACs!

Normally we don’t get all that political here on MM, but with the election coming up soon and amidst all the misinformation floating around, we wanted to point out some of our pals who are trying to shake things up a bit:

Want elections, not auctions? Today, Stick it to Super PACs and reject the auction of political speech to corporate interests and the 1%. Join others around the country who are taking a stand to protect democracy. This post explains why the $433 million Super PACs have raised to influence this election is dangerous for democracy. This website will help you become a proverbial wrench in the gears of Super PACs via email, phone or social media. New song from Girls’ Christopher Owens

Not sure if Girls ex-frontman has forgotten about us already, but we still give him a lot of credit for making the best music to come out of San Francisco in years, as well as generally keeping it real when it comes to SF. Any fears that breaking up the band would knock him off the course he’s been pursuing over the last 2.5 albums were unfounded, as this morning he released the intro and first track of his new album, out in January. In classic Owens style, he chronicles a cross-country tour to New York City, and even gets a little sexy at the end, with the following great lyric: “Hair on my head / tongue in my mouth / I’ve got it all figured out. / Open up your heart tonight, New York City. / Tongue in my ear / hair in my mouth / I want you to figure me out. / Open up your arms tonight…”

Love that guy.

SF SPCA celebrates the World Series in the cutest way ever

For the duration of the World Series, the SF SPCA is waiving adoption fees on animals with both black and orange markings. Calico kitties! The little fellow in the pic above! My cats are A’s fans, but they totally support this promotion. Visit www.sfspca.org/adoptions to find a new pal!

**UPDATE**

My pet rescue sources tell me that the Michigan Humane Society is holding a friendly wager going with the SF SPCA. Per their Facebook:

We have a friendly wager going with our friends at The San Francisco SPCA! If the Detroit Tigers win the World Series, San Francisco SPCA will sponsor 10 animals in our care with a $10 reduction in their adoption fee. If the San Francisco Giants win the World Series, MHS will sponsor 10 animals in their care with a $10 adoption fee reduction. BRING IT ON!!

In the end, it is the pets who will win!!! Awwww, yeah I’m a dork.

Enumerating Hoodies

Esteemed Mission writer @brittneyg asks an extremely important question about San Francisco:

An illuminating Twitter discussion followed — more here — and thanks to @therealWBTC, we are collecting DATA – how many hoodies do you own?

Do hoodies outnumber San Franciscans? Add your zip code and we can answer that eternal question — who has more hoodies, the Mission or Outer Sunset? And how many dogs have hoodies?
