Contest: Win two tickets to a night of art, dance, and music from beyond the astral plane

If you’re looking for something to do this Thursday, you need look no further, because Mashi Mashi is presenting a visceral night of astral plane visionary aesthetes that happens to have a little something for everybody.  Bands, DJ’s, and art–what more could you possibly want?  It’s all going down at Cellspace this Thursday, and they’re even giving away two free tickets!

All you have to do is write a caption in the comments for one of the images in the flyer (see it bigger here), like that one of the cheetah on the Ferrari [night city gazelles are FUCKED].  The contest ends Wednesday at 5pm, so get cracking!

RSVP and invite your friends here!  Oh, and don’t forget to properly prepare for the occasion by listening to a custom mix curated by Tristes Tropiques!

Interview with the roommate-seeking Facebook advertiser

Street food babe and SF subletter by choice Valerie Luu interviewed that girl we posted about last week who was having such a hard time finding a place to live that she resorted to facebook advertising. Was her search fruitful? Apparently not:

What did people say?

“You’re fucking dumb.” is one that struck out the most because I don’t think there’s anything dumb about utilizing a popular social network to help.

Anything helps, right? So why not use it?

I’ve gotten offers from people who wanted me to live with them and I even made a few friends! But mostly what they were offering wasn’t ideal to me (like sharing a house room with two other people, or relocating to Oakland.)

Damn, well if she can’t share a room with two other people, then forget about renting half a bed. So she’s moving back to Seattle for now, the mythical land of sub-$3000 900 sq. ft. studios.

Did you lose your keys near 20th and Valencia?

Spotted in front of Borderlands Sunday:

Was it you? If so, I think someone found them and dropped them off at Golden Eagle Market. Don’t get any funny ideas, key collectors.

More baffling signage at La Rondalla

Well, as far as we can tell, La Rondalla isn’t any closer to reopening since the last time we checked. It’s clear they missed their projected “by June at the latest” launch date.

However, they are continuing their long tradition of putting up mysterious signs with vague references to current events in order to demonstrate that they are still alive:

But wait, are these really elaborate clues about the fate of the restaurant? Let’s analyze:

“Summer time blues”: Well it is summer, but why the blues? Are the blues about acquiring the necessary permits to tack up dangerous amounts of tinsel throughout the interior as they did in the past?

“No kid hungry”: Is this alluding to some kind of after-school meal program that they plan to offer?

Brand-new Rhea’s Deli coming soon to 20th and Bryant!

Over the weekend, neighbors received Notice of Building Permit Application packets detailing a planned second Rhea’s Deli location on the southwest corner of 20th and Bryant in the space formerly occupied by Deli-Up Cafe. This is huge. (I liked Deli-Up because it was a rare deli that offered crinkle-cut french fries as a side dish, but c’mon — ANOTHER RHEA’S!)

Unlike the original Rhea’s, as you can see, this one’s gonna have a ton of seating, so presumably the vibe will be much more eatery and much less corner store. A welcome addition to this corner of the neighborhood! (And the documents below state that the business name will be Rhea’s Cafe, which would make the distinction even clearer.)

UPDATE: Mike Chino brings up an excellent point:

Mike:  holy cow new rheas is exciting
me:  yupppppp
Mike:  i bet this means they’ll be bringing back the katsu
me:  YUSSSSSSSS
Mike:  james said they had to stop making it due to permitting/zoning something something

I guess they weren’t allowed a fryer? Hopefully this place will have a fryer! (Shit, maybe they’ll even bring back crinkle-cut fries!)

More pics and details after the jump. (Thanks, David!) (more…)

Hot new look for summer: Stripe synchronization

20120813-100307.jpg

I never thought we could ever surpass last season’s amazing stripe coordination, but lo and behold, our pals surprise us with a totally unscripted stripe troika! Or stroika, if you will.

And of course, it wouldn’t be right to show so many stripes without a word from our dear friend.

The day after last night’s epic coke party

20120813-082618.jpg

Not quite as bad as the ultimate Whippits party aftermath, but seriously, that much caffeine could kill you.

On that note, I wonder which of the following when consumed in one night would make you feel the absolute crappiest the next day: 24-case of Coke, 60 or so Whippits, or an 8-ball to the dome?

Carjacking/possible kidnapping last night at 20th / San Carlos Street

Our buddy Wesley writes:

I hate to be quoted on this kind of thing, but sometime this morning, between 420 and 430, I heard a woman scream outside. There were a few bursts of screaming within a short time period (30 seconds, maybe), and by the time I was able to get to the phone, a car was speeding off with the passenger side door open, heading towards 19th (from the direction of 20th). I was not able to properly identify the make or even color of the car to the police, who I was at that time on the phone with. Another neighbor said she heard a woman scream that she had been attacked, and that someone was getting into her car. A few of us also heard some kind of collision, though we didn’t see any damage on the street. Though there were approximately 6 neighbors/witnesses in the street corroborating information, the police weren’t given much to go on. A minute after I called 911, two patrol cars came down san carlos, and we redirected them in the direction of the speeding car.
