Sayonara, Mi Lindo Yucatan!

When Eater SF reported this week that Valencia Street Yucatecan restaurant Mi Lindo Yucatan is officially donezo, one memory came flooding back.

One Cinco de Mayo about five or so years ago, me and a couple friends and a girl I was dating decided to start our night with dinner here. We arrived early, were the first group seated, placed our order.

After a while, we realized we’d been waiting a while, but we were having a good time and kept waiting. After an hour, we started to grow grumpy, particularly after we noticed that the tables around us — groups that had been seated well after us — were getting their entrees, and we were still foodless.

At this point, we inquired as to our food’s whereabouts. Server made a holy-smokes face, ran back to the kitchen, and returned to tell us she’d forgotten to put our order in, but that it was in now and would be out shortly. She was very apologetic, but we talked it over and decided we had places to be and would wait no further.

We got up to leave, and when we were halfway out the door the owner or manager or something runs up on us, pleading, “Please, please, we are all very sorry; please stay and your dinner will be free of charge.”

Perhaps out of pride or something we said thanks but no thanks and exited. One of us even relayed the story to another group now on its way in, convincing them to rethink their dinner plans as well.

Now I feel bad. Had we stayed and paid our tab or at least not made a scene, might MLY still be in business today?

But seriously, in this economy it does seem dumb to have turned down a free meal. Did we do the right thing?

Jay Reatard's In Heaven

I’ve been looking for this song all week, and finally found it just now deeep in some Google search results, on SF Weekly’s All Shook Down of all places. Jay posted it on his blog a couple summers ago saying something like that it was just a modest little experiment. It’s an oddity in that it’s got a girl singing most of the vocals and is kind of upbeat and sweet: “In Heaven” by Jay Reatard is here.

Haiti's First Earthquake

Local rock ‘n’ roll band My First Earthquake is putting its money where its name is, for for the remainder of January they are sending all proceeds from sales of their album Downstairs to Haitian earthquake victims.

AND, it’s pay-what-you-will style, so you can help the Haitians a lot or a little, and either way you walk away with some music. Pay up!

Heaven's Dumbasses

Sexpigeon over the weekend coined some new nomenclature for us Californians.

Rosamunde Opens Monday

Which is perfect because I’m pretty sure the name is pronounced “Rosa-Monday.”

Eight Sterling Super Sleuths Serving the Citizens of the Mission

In this week’s Mission Station Newsletter, incoming Captain Greg Corrales introduces us to the eight incoming detectives he seems to be pretty pumped about:

The eight sterling super sleuths serving citizens of the district are:
· Inspector John Miller is a 17-year veteran. He has worked in SWAT and
has previously served in the Mission District. He has spent the last five
years investigating crimes while assigned to the Bureau of Inspectors.
· Sergeant Thomas Johnson is a 12-year veteran. He too, has previously
served in the Mission District. He has spent the last three years
investigating crimes while assigned to the Bureau of Inspectors
· Sergeant William Conley is a 14-year veteran. He has previously
served at Northern Station and the Vice Detail. He most recently served as
a patrol supervisor in the Bayview District.
· Sergeant Scott Gaines is a 14-year veteran. He has served in the
Central and Northern Districts, as well as the Vice Detail. He was
previously working as a patrol supervisor in the Mission District before I
asked him to move to Investigations.
· Sergeant Arline Gilmore is a 15-year veteran. She previously served
in the Taraval District where for many years she was part of the elite TNT
unit (Taraval Neighborhood Task Force). She was also a patrol supervisor in
the Mission District before I asked her to move to Investigations.
· Sergeant Kevin Healy is a 14-year veteran. He has previously served
in the Tenderloin District, where while working as a decoy he was robbed
hundreds of times. He most recently served in the Narcotics Division.
· Sergeant Kevin McPherson is a 10-year veteran. He previously worked
in the Bayview District.
· Sergeant Christopher Woon is a 14-year veteran. He has previously
served in the Ingleside, Taraval, and Northern Districts.

Captain Corrales has also taken to prefacing his newsletters with a thought-provoking quote or poem. Here is this week’s:

“’Tis easy enough to be pleasant
When life flows along like a song;
But the man worth while is the one who will smile
When everything goes dead wrong.”
Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Pedestrian Run Over Completely By A Car at Mission and 18th?

Reader Mr. P. says:

Last night around 10:45pm there was a hit-and-run at mission and 18th street – a pedestrian was run over completely by a car, which then sped off. It was about the most awful thing I’ve ever seen.

SFPD has no record of any such incident. Can anyone else corroborate?

Update: Mr. P. elaborates:

A car parked on Mission Street was pointed south and pulled out quickly from a parking spot after someone driving by seemed to shout/throw something at the car.  After the car pulled out it accelerated quickly and then gunned the engine turning right (west) onto 18th street.  The pedestrian was in the crosswalk and basically was mowed down as the car went by.

A fire truck, police, and ambulance were there pretty quickly. It was a pretty scary thing to see in our neighborhood!

Dolores Park Bike Polo Crackdown

Police and rangers the other night shut down a bike polo match in the tennis courts at Dolores Park. Players were fined for participating in an “unauthorized athletic activity.” Dolores Park View has the full story, including comment from the accused. Read on.

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
