Mission Street Food: 'Oh Okay, We'll Take Donations'

As you heard last week, Mission Street Food is working on moving out of their oh-so-classy classy Lung Shan digs and becoming a full-time non-profit restaurant. Their initial $500 investment option was a bit steep for most folks, so they moved over to the kickstarter.com model which allows you to donate arbitrary amounts of money anywhere from $1 and up.

If you donate $50 and up you get a gift certificate to the restaurant for that amount, so it practically pays for itself if you were planning on going there anyway. More details on their blog or just hop over to kickstarter page here. They have to reach their $10,000 goal before May 5th for the funding to happen.

If you aren’t aware of what Mission Street Food is all about, this documentary covers it pretty well.

Stolen Cruiser

Reader Jesse W. had his bike stolen. Anyone seen it? It’s a really unique Schwinn cruiser that seems pretty hard to miss:

Last night (Thursday, 2/4), my super-fly Schwinn cruiser was stolen, along with three other bikes, from my garage at 15th and Guerrero.  It’s super recognizable, especially if the dumb-ass punk(s) who stole it neglect to unstring the LED christmas lights from the frame.

If you have any leads post a comment or email us (missionmissionmission at gmail dot com) and we’ll make sure Jesse hears about it.

Before the inevitable, “WTF dude, are you gonna post every stolen bike on here? People get their bikes stolen every day! Try Craigslist and next time triple-lock your bike to the radiator in your bedroom.” No, we don’t post every stolen bike on here, but we do post the ones from readers in the Mission who ask us nicely and we have been able to help recover stolen things before. So if you can spare the 2 seconds out of your busy weekend schedule to glance at this bike, then cool. If not, then no big deal.

Silly Kids, Tagging Is For Adults!

Twitterer @holleratme snapped this shot on MUNI:

That’s a bit harsh isn’t it? I prefer the kid-friendly signs at the Daly City BART station:

Congratulations to @ronjamesfisher, I guess. At least someone is a winner here.

Dolores Park Works Puts The Smack-Down On Renovation Rumors

Crystal at Dolores Park Works hopes to set the record straight on the rumors flying about the proposed Dolores Park renovations in 2011. Particularly of interest to the folks who are losing their shit on facebook, is this:

The renovations will be done in phases. The whole park will not be closed or fenced off for the duration of the renovations.

Phase 1: The playground remodel, which has been in development by Friends of Dolores Park Playground, Supervisory Bevan Dufty’s office and SF Rec & Parks since 2006. It is scheduled to start in October 2010 and end in April 2011. Please note that this work will be done in the “off season.” The rest of the park will be available during this time if safe access can be provided.  YAY!

Phase 2: Initial estimates, and I do mean initial, put the park’s renovation at about 16-17 months.  This is a liberal estimate. You know the mantra – under promise and over deliver.  From what we’ve heard so far, it doesn’t look like the park will be closed for the entire time. The goal is to limit the impact on the community while ensuring that the work is done efficiently and safely.

Get the full scoop here and find out how you can get involved with the planning in a way that doesn’t involve, you know, sitting in front of your computer. No word on what they hope to do about the ever-rising perv activity in the park.

This beauty awaits you on 16th and Guerrero. Now all you need is a ManBearPig suit and you can put the finishing touches on your “the Shining” themed guest room.

Set Phasers To Baffle

Sexpigeon puzzled over this mural today. I’m going to take a gamble and assume that it’s on the side of the Walgreens on 16th based on the flanking photos in the stream.

Oddly, I learned new things about both Elvis and and Patrick Stewart today before seeing this. Coincidence or cosmic anomaly?

  1. Jailhouse Rock alludes to prison rape “Number 47 said to number 3, You’re the cutest jailbird I ever did see…”
  2. Patrick Stewart explains why, unlike his ex-Starfleet comrades, he doesn’t twitter.

Why would I want to “heave my food”? Or is this a catapult home delivery technique?

Save Dolores Park From Your Cubicle

Reader Fred M. alerts us that there’s a Facebook group for protesting the potential Dolores Park shut-down scheduled for September of 2011.

So just in case parks and recreation starts using Facebook for policy decisions, there’s your chance to be heard. Or maybe you’re just trying to get your groups count to an even 50. In any case:

Contact Park and Rec and ask them not to close the ENTIRE park for the duration of the renovations! Although we understand that there are improvements to be made at Dolores Park, shutting down the entire place for 17+ months just seems punitive. Let’s convince them that they can do it in sections and keep pieces of the park open for Mission residents.

Also, let the record show that KevMo and Uptown Almanac broke the DoPa renovations story which is going uncredited just about everywhere today, not that journalistic integrity is our forte.

Street Art Hits Home

Gurnek S. laments:

This past Saturday my roommates and I threw a party in honor of our beloved Emily’s birthday (sweetheart roommie).  The party was great, everyone was having an awesome time, but some schlub decided to tag our bathroom door.  Completely uncool.  I’ve never been vandalized by a guest before, so I’m really disappointed.  We maybe had as many as 50 people at one point, but they were all pretty much good friends with a few exceptions.  I’ve attached a pic of the pathetic tag and I’m hoping you might post it.  I have no delusions about finding this schmuck, but maybe if you put his tag out there someone will recognize it and tell this guy he’s a total douche.

Hear that, tagger guy? You made somebody sad. Maybe now you’ll rethink your life and go back to art school. Or just hold out until you get a paid gig painting a sign for a local business.
