Crystal at Dolores Park Works hopes to set the record straight on the rumors flying about the proposed Dolores Park renovations in 2011. Particularly of interest to the folks who are losing their shit on facebook, is this:
The renovations will be done in phases. The whole park will not be closed or fenced off for the duration of the renovations.
Phase 1: The playground remodel, which has been in development by Friends of Dolores Park Playground, Supervisory Bevan Dufty’s office and SF Rec & Parks since 2006. It is scheduled to start in October 2010 and end in April 2011. Please note that this work will be done in the “off season.” The rest of the park will be available during this time if safe access can be provided. YAY!
Phase 2: Initial estimates, and I do mean initial, put the park’s renovation at about 16-17 months. This is a liberal estimate. You know the mantra – under promise and over deliver. From what we’ve heard so far, it doesn’t look like the park will be closed for the entire time. The goal is to limit the impact on the community while ensuring that the work is done efficiently and safely.
Get the full scoop here and find out how you can get involved with the planning in a way that doesn’t involve, you know, sitting in front of your computer. No word on what they hope to do about the ever-rising perv activity in the park.
This beauty awaits you on 16th and Guerrero. Now all you need is a ManBearPig suit and you can put the finishing touches on your “the Shining” themed guest room.

Sexpigeon puzzled over this mural today. I’m going to take a gamble and assume that it’s on the side of the Walgreens on 16th based on the flanking photos in the stream.
Oddly, I learned new things about both Elvis and and Patrick Stewart today before seeing this. Coincidence or cosmic anomaly?
Bonus video of Patrick Stewart acting like a total perv on Extras:
Why would I want to “heave my food”? Or is this a catapult home delivery technique?

Reader Fred M. alerts us that there’s a Facebook group for protesting the potential Dolores Park shut-down scheduled for September of 2011.
So just in case parks and recreation starts using Facebook for policy decisions, there’s your chance to be heard. Or maybe you’re just trying to get your groups count to an even 50. In any case:
Contact Park and Rec and ask them not to close the ENTIRE park for the duration of the renovations! Although we understand that there are improvements to be made at Dolores Park, shutting down the entire place for 17+ months just seems punitive. Let’s convince them that they can do it in sections and keep pieces of the park open for Mission residents.
Also, let the record show that KevMo and Uptown Almanac broke the DoPa renovations story which is going uncredited just about everywhere today, not that journalistic integrity is our forte.
Gurnek S. laments:
This past Saturday my roommates and I threw a party in honor of our beloved Emily’s birthday (sweetheart roommie). The party was great, everyone was having an awesome time, but some schlub decided to tag our bathroom door. Completely uncool. I’ve never been vandalized by a guest before, so I’m really disappointed. We maybe had as many as 50 people at one point, but they were all pretty much good friends with a few exceptions. I’ve attached a pic of the pathetic tag and I’m hoping you might post it. I have no delusions about finding this schmuck, but maybe if you put his tag out there someone will recognize it and tell this guy he’s a total douche.
Hear that, tagger guy? You made somebody sad. Maybe now you’ll rethink your life and go back to art school. Or just hold out until you get a paid gig painting a sign for a local business.
Fuck yeah! The Mission dominated this year’s 7×7 2010 Big Eat SF with 26% of the 100 recommended restaurants. Take that, Hayes Valley! I’m not going to bother calculating that number for the other ‘hoods because who cares about them right?

San Francisco’s Mark Growden is finally back from months of touring and he’s playing at the Porto Franco Art Parlor on Liberty and Valencia this Friday. The last Mark Growden show of this type sold out pretty quick, so only advance tickets are available. Grab them here.
Mark is an amazing songwriter and musician who plays the chromatic button accordion, an instrument that is pretty damn rare in the states. You pretty much have to walk into an accordion shop, glaze over the bountiful piano accordions, and say, “fuck it, I want to play the harder one”. I guess the added bonus is that no one will ever ask to play it during your set break. If only I had a nickel for every time some dude walked up to my guitar and said, “hey dude nice axe, hey can I show my friend this RHCP tune I just learned?”
Oh, have you seen that video of Mark Growden playing bicycle handlebars? It’s outta sight!
BTW if any of you musically-inclined cyclists are into collaborating on an all bike parts band (“bikestra”), he’s totally down.
