SF Chronicle: Range "Captures" The Mission

I know the Chronicle claimed they could not list a restaurant that “captured” the Mission, but merely two months ago they did just that:

Following are restaurants that capture the spirit of their locale:

Mission District

Range: Exceptional, frequently changing menu of New American food. Superb service and clever interior with intriguing use of industrial artifacts. 842 Valencia (near 20th Street); (415) 232-8283. Dinner nightly. (link)

Personally, I think that selection captures the driving force behind the Chronicle’s declining readership.

East Coast/West Coast Graffiti Rivalry

ORFN!  From jerhodes:

21st and valencia ish. that old 'new college' building.

My friend Daniella loved ORFN more than anyone.  Then she moved to New York, and now all she gets is Dick Chicken:

Ugh.

Bummer.  Don’t move to New York, people, unless you want to see a CHICKEN with a DICK for a HEAD on all your trash receptacles.  Oh, and Dick Chicken’s slutty gf, Pussy Ham.  She’s a slab of HAM with a PUSSY.  Together, they make a really trashy reverse Chicken Cordon Bleu.

New York.  So gritty.

Killing My Lobster: Holidays with Class

I Heart Fall

I generally think seasons are overrated but nothing matches the beauty of dying leaves.  We don’t get much of a foliage in the Mission, but those rare patches of it are spectacular.

Hacked?

Alright, who’s the wise guy that put javascript snow flakes on MM?

Update: problem solved.  I really hope wordpress dies a slow death.

Which Restaurant Best Captures the Mission?

The Chronicle’s Michael Bauer posted an interesting idea this morning: that each neighborhood has a restaurant that captures its essence.  He encouraged readers to write in with suggestions… but prefaced that “if you live in the Mission, there are too many to list.”

Cop out!  Curious as to what you Missionites would pick.  I assume suggestions posted here will be less pretentious than any over at Between Meals, so by all means, comment.  And sure, KevMo, you can vote for Bender’s.

Previously on Mission Mission:

Spidey Dollar

Saw this dollar taped to the tip jar at Philz.  Thought it looked pretty cool but was shocked at their complete disregard for the federal laws about vandalizing cash money.  Don’t worry commenters, I called the FBI and reported the offense.

You can sleep soundly tonight.

Online Vintage From Mother's Daughter

Hayden wrote in with news of her Mission-based online vintage shop called Mother’s Daughter a few days ago and I’ve only just now had a chance to peruse the website.  I’m a sucker for online shopping and one-of-a-kind dresses and was excited by what I saw.

Such quality finds!  Such decent prices!  Such friendly user interface and lovely photography!  Oh, and here’s what Hayden has to say:

Hi! I just opened an online vintage shop based in the mission. I shot a lot of the photos for the store on film on the roof of the building next to my apartment at 18th and mission, i’ve attached a couple just to give you an idea. The website is called Mother’s Daughter and can be found at: www.mothersdaughter.com. We hope to not just limit ourselves to selling clothes and soon want to begin selling local artists & photographers prints, handmade items and really whatever my friends in the mission are making. Hope you enjoy-wanted to give a heads up!

Seriously. If you walked into a party wearing this late ’60s Pierre Cardin number, panties would DROP:

Check it out if you want. Or whatever, Mission Thrift is fun too.
