Mission Cantina: Danny Bowien’s Mexican restaurant in NYC

Eater SF reports:

In an interesting move, Mission Chinese Food’s own Danny Bowien is following up his NYC Mission Chinese Food outpost with a Mexican restaurant to be called Mission Cantina. Despite the name, it won’t be a taqueria, and no Mission-style burritos are planned: the restaurant will serve dishes inspired by Bowien’s travels to Mexico City, with rotisserie-grilled items and shareable plates.

Cool name, though. Read on.

Halloween continues this Friday with Still Flyin’ performing as New Order for American Tripps at the Rickshaw Stop

So I know that today is October 31st and all, but let’s be honest; this whole week is Halloween.  It started last weekend and doesn’t let up for a minute this weekend, as you’ll see when one of San Francisco’s best bands dons their New Order costumes and hits the stage while ping-pongers dance around in circles.

When I first heard about this show, I thought, “Wow, one of my favorite local bands is performing as one of my favorite all-time bands at one of my favorite venues during one of my favorite activities.  This night must have been made for me!”  And that’s before I heard that Nick Pal’s new band is also making their debut:

This is the official American Tripps Halloween/Dia de los Muertos party! We’ll have Berlin-style ping pong on the main dance floor for most of the night, and DJ Beauregard on the decks most of the night, but we also decided to book some additional entertainment this time. And it is gonna be epic:

Still Flyin’ performing as NEW ORDER
→ Honeymoon in Canada (debut show), the new group featuring Chex Otakan (SF karaoke legend) and Nick Pal (The Kablamies, Readyville)

Plus we’ll have skeeball (courtesy of Joey the Cat) and foosball and mini-ping-pong up in the mezzanine, drink specials, and a COSTUME CONTEST.

So yeah, I guess I’ll see you there tomorrow!  Check out all the details here.

Maybe this will get you in the mood

Do you still belong here?

Maybe they’d be rubber or something. Just a thought. Could call the set Sutro Bath Toys.

Gnarly pedestrian accident

@SFSavage, father of P.D. Bird was tangentially involved in a pedestrian car accident today downtown:

Apparently the driver took off before the police got involved. Really hoping the pedestrian is not too badly injured, but it sounds pretty rough. These streets are busy, and I’m hearing about too many pedestrian/car/bike accidents these days. No matter how you’re moving through a street, it’s everyone’s responsibility to be aware of what’s around. I like to think I’m careful as a pedestrian, on a bike and in my car, but we could all use a reminder.

In other news, Curbed reports that the large and confusing intersection at Haight-Gough-Market is getting an overhaul with regards to safety. Good to hear, I was the victim of a hit and run while walking across that street a year ago.

Fund set up for victims of Monday’s fire

[pic by George Belle]

Friends and neighbors of some tenants displaced by yesterday’s fire on Valencia Street have set up a fund to help them get back on their feet.

At 1pm on October 28th, our friends’ apartment at 25th and Valencia in San Francisco’s Mission District caught on fire (the cause is still being determined). Luckily, our friends noticed the fire and were able to get everyone out of the building before it was completely engulfed in flames. By the evening, when firefighters escorted them one at a time back inside the destroyed building to search for belongings, they found little left intact. Most of their posessions have been lost, and they are now without a place to live. Please help our friends get back on their feet by donating what you can!

The money raised here will be given over to the five tenants at 1448 Valencia to divvy up between those affected, so that they can replace some of what was lost.

UPDATE: Our pal Leef from Mission: Comics & Art tells us that EHS Pilates, at 1452 Valencia, are also looking for some help today (Tuesday):

EHS was effected by a 3 alarm fire yesterday and suffered severe water and smoke damage. We are here at the studio NOW (12noon) trying to salvage everything else. We are looking for a little help here. If you can spare an hour today to help move props, books, etc. or just stand outside and make sure no one walks away with our equipment. Any help you can give us right now would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you. Carrie

Muni gets a second Blackpool ‘boat tram’

The Market Street Railway blog breaks the news:

As our members learned first in their exclusive newsletter, Inside Track, Market Street Railway has acquired for Muni a second boat tram. We’ll have much more to say about this here in a few days, but for now, we just want to thank Michael Thoresen, the most generous donor who made the acquisition possible through the Thoresen Foundation, and FedEx Trade Networks, which arranged and helped underwrite the shipping of the tram from England to San Francisco. Now that we have two, can we race ‘em?
